[07:32:09 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Hi Janie, thanks for taking time to talk to us at ITKMAGAZINE, can you tell us a little about how you first got into the music, and

who were some of your early influences?[07:34:53 PM] Janie Bay: Thanks for the chat! Music has always been in myfamily. My mom and dad were in a band together in High School and oftenplayed at school events. My mom sang and my dad played trumpet and sangtoo, so it was only natural for me to follow in their footsteps. I started singing atage 3 (seriously) and professionally at age 13. My earliest influences was 60'srock, because that is what my parents were listening to most of the time.[07:36:51 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: from that early age was music always a careerpath you wanted to follow?[07:38:55 PM] Janie Bay: It was always my dream to be involved in music, but

the opportunities were scarce, even though everyone always said I must usemy talent. It is true when people say "Just do it, because no one is going to doit for you." Well, in my experience. So yes, I knew I wanted to sing and write asa career, I just needed to make it happen.[07:41:45 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: well congratulations! You certainly made ithappen with 2 singles reaching the top of the charts and your debut albumhas just been released - sure way to make your parents feel proud.[07:42:26 PM] Janie Bay: Thank you! Yes, we are very excited to share thealbum with everyone which we have been working on for the past year andhalf.

[07:44:33 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: has your musical taste changed over the yearand a half? What has been the inspiration behind the album?

[07:49:10 PM] Janie Bay: I think my taste in music has been very consistent, but with the new sounds and styles we hear every year, it is bound tochange to some extent, because music is ever evolving, but generally, Iprefer rock oriented music. I also just feel if a song is good, it's good, nomatter the genre. My inspiration for the songs on my album is mostly frompeople close to me, especially my father who passed away in November2008. The album was written in memory of him and a couple of songs on thealbum are about him, the main one being 'Legacy'. The album is called 'IRemember', because it was written from life experiences with family andfriends from childhood all the way up to my adult life.

[07:53:20 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: You have worked with producer Kevin Leicher

previously, was he involved in the rest of the album?[07:54:44 PM] Janie Bay: Yes, Kevin Leicher produced 7 of the 9 tracks withme and my brother (co-producer) Theunis Cilliers. We enjoyed workingtogether on the first 2 singles and we decided to complete the albumtogether.

[07:59:35 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: When listening to the tracks one does get thefeeling, like you are taking us on a journey through your life. Do you feel likea chapter is now complete and what is the next step forward for Janie Bay?

  • 8/7/2019 009 Itk Magazine

    15/98

[08:04:05 PM] Janie Bay: I felt that I had things to deal with in life and my lyricsare a true reflection of what I was going through at the time. The next stepwould be to share the album with as many people across the globe as wecan, to perform the songs from the items to a live audience to portray andexpress the emotions behind the songs. We have already started playing withnew ideas for another album, so "watch this space" :).

[08:06:15 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: sounds like its going to be a busy year ahead! How do you find a balance between work and relaxation?

[08:09:33 PM] Janie Bay: I must say, it is very hard. I am kind of an over achieverand so is my brother. He is my manager and creative producer and we areboth perfectionists, so we tend to push ourselves really hard, but you need totake time out to relax as much as you possibly can or your work won't be ofquality. So, a good night's sleep is very important for physical and mental

wellbeing, but also for the vocal chords.[08:13:12 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: makes perfect sense, but would you rather wantan audience ogling your body or listening to your songs?

[08:14:36 PM] Janie Bay: I don't think my body is much to look at, so definitelylisten to my songs :)

[08:21:09 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: sure there is someone special in your life... in anormal day what 3 items do you never leave home without?[08:22:34 PM] Janie Bay: My iPhone, handbag (with wallet & ID) and positivity.

[08:23:23 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: and would you say you are a water baby or landlover?[08:24:56 PM] Janie Bay: Both.

[08:30:00 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: do you have final words for your fans, friends andfollowers?

[08:32:13 PM] Janie Bay: Thank you so much for all your support, messages, emails, love and encouragement during the years and for supporting my music. You havehelped me to keep motivated in such a difficult industry and I am so excited toshare my life and experiences within my music with you. Peace... Love... Music xxx.

[08:34:31 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Well in a competitive industry, you certainly havewhat it takes to get noticed so here's to your continued success & keep on makingit happen.[08:35:15 PM] Janie Bay: Thanks so much!

[08:35:18 PM] Janie Bay: :)[08:37:20 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: It has been a pleasure spending time with you, muchlove from all at ITK MAGAZINE[08:42:58 PM] Janie Bay: Much love! :)

Zoe Coetzee caught up with Local fashion designers andthis is what the ladies had to say...

2:37:16 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Hi Parisha and Maxine, thanks so much for joining ITKtoday for a chat! It is great to have you with us![2:42:40 PM] maxinebenatar: hi[2:43:53 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: So to start off with, tell us how and when did you twocome together and start Bombshell Clothing and where has that led to today?[2:50:26 PM] maxinebenatar: We met while we were working as buyers for

Truworths. In 1999 we decided to leave and try to start something on our own. Webegan by supplying the YOUNG DESIGNERS EMPORIUM with our own merchandise. They only had 1 store at the time and we were given 1 rail to fill. Our first range wascalled Bombshell. Its been 12 years since we began and we now have 4 differentlabels in YDE, and supply 19 stores.[2:53:00 PM] maxinebenatar: When we began we knew very little aboutmanufacturing. We have learnt so much over the years. The fashion industry istough and you really need to have a passion for what you do in order to survive. We are best friends and having each other really helps. We now have a staff ofabout 28 and work from a design studio.[2:54:46 PM] Parisha Chetty: All the designing is done by us, we import all our fabrics

    and manufacture the collections locally.

[2:55:12 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: That is great to know that you are still so hands on!

And wow - that is an inspiring success story! Having gone from strength to strength,

what would you say is the secret of your success?[2:55:34 PM] Parisha Chetty: Hard work!![2:56:26 PM] Parisha Chetty: We are really involved on all levels of the business. A"hands on" approach is key to our success.[2:58:14 PM] Parisha Chetty: Also we LOVE fashion and this passion inspires us. Eachday brings new challenges and we work well together as a team to createsuccessful collections.[2:59:09 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: So the age old maxims of hard work and passion areall very true![3:00:29 PM] Parisha Chetty: So true!! We also understand the fashion needs of theSouth African customer better because of our background as buyers.

[3:02:13 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: That too is so important! What do you think sets theSouth African customer apart from say a European market? What have you foundto be important to our fashion needs locally?[3:13:25 PM] Parisha Chetty: I find that although the South African customer is veryaware of international fashion trends and enjoys wearing the latest trends , we arenot "slaves" to fashion here. Here the girls are far more concerned about how thegarment makes them look. Our girls like looking attractive. If there is a fashion trendout there that is not flattering our South African girl does not wear it. She is far morediscerning about her choice of fashion and does not feel under pressure to wearthe "latest trends" if its not going to be flattering for her.

[3:15:21 PM] Parisha Chetty: I find that in Europe many girls wear whatever is in fashioneven if it does not "suit" them.... their body shape, height, colouring.....[3:18:04 PM] Parisha Chetty: We travel and almost "pre select" trends. We cover all the

fashion looks for the season but we are very selective about the look that we want for thecollection.... fashionable with all the key trends.[3:18:44 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: A true brand of individuality! I love that! It is great to know thatSouth Africans are not just sheep and have some discernment in their style choices![3:19:25 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Travelling as much as you do, do you have a favourite, funnytravelling story that you would be willing to share with the ITK readers, that you can lookback at and laugh about now?[3:27:53 PM] maxinebenatar: We have many! There is one that comes to mind the minute Ithink of our travels. It was our first overseas trip together. We went to Hong Kong. I had abusiness card from my Truworths days with the address of an agent which I thought may

be able to help us. We caught 2 trains, and arrived in an industrial area in Shamshipo. Wethen spent the next 2 hours walking around trying to find this building. We were tired andhungry. Eventually we found the street address and walked into what looked like abuilding site. Parisha wanted to leave, by now she was ready to kill me ,I insisted we atleast go into the lift and try find the office. So we get into this lift full of semi naked chineseworkmen, in the middle of nowhere! Did I mention that no-one speaks English! Anyway wepress the number of the floor on the card and next thing the lift doors open and there isabsolutely nothing in front of us! There is a big gaping hole!!!We got a huge fright andsuddenly realised exactly how dangerous our situation actually was. We ran out of thereas fast as we could and couldn't get back into town fast enough!!!

[3:28:26 PM] maxinebenatar: We have since learnt to eat breakfast, wear comfortable

clothes and not travel to remote places.

[3:29:42 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: hahhaaa - that is hysterical, but only from the perspective ofhindsight! I guess you learn these valuable lessons as you go along.[3:29:57 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Being on the cutting edge of the upcoming trends, what canyou tell us about the upcoming trends for this winter season? What should we be lookingout for, and looking to add to our winter wardrobes?[3:34:27 PM] maxinebenatar: There is a strong trend towards layering. Wearing a sheerdress with a thick heavy coat over it, warm scarf etc...Al ot of soft feminine styling, frills, ruffles, soft hemlines.[3:34:48 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: oohh, it sounds so pretty![3:35:49 PM] Parisha Chetty: Jackets are always big every winter season. This season's

jacket is the biker and the aviator jacket with sherpa fur collar.

[3:36:27 PM] Parisha Chetty: We have these jackets in BOMBSHELL and SUPERSTAR. TheJEGGINGS are also HUGE.[3:37:09 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Oh yay - I love biker jackets - I must admit I am actuallylooking forward to the change in season - love winter fashion, and now I know just whereto go the get a great jacket :)[3:37:12 PM] Parisha Chetty: The sexy tight bodycon skirt is HOT HOT HOT!!! We havedifferent styles in all the collections.[3:37:52 PM] Parisha Chetty: Also the bodycon dress...SUPER SEXY!!! You need a licence towear these dresses.... ;)[3:38:00 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: hehee

    The World Online

What is your BBM?....aah? Sorry love, I dont do BBM that was my response to almosteveryone I came across with BBs! In fact about 3 years ago in London when BBs hitthe tech world, did it not leave much impression on me for a very obvious reason

which was; I do not want to receive my emails on the go. Why do that? I dont want tobe pinged, dinged or tripled tinged. Fair enough if you were the corporate on the runand needed information on the go. What did little old me, who was probably waitingon my then boyfriend to email me or possibly text, need a berry for? Now,everywhere you goits as if the beauty and trendy bunch has conformed to the mostinsane, unsociable culture. You can be at a dinner party and its as if theyre waitingfor some results of some sorts, youre sitting in a meeting and someone is slyly sending amessage. You can be in a nightclub and its as if youre BBM your drug dealer

In fact Blackberry has become technology designer mobile drugs to speak. What is itabout being on the go and in the know (ha,ha) that keeps us so addicted? Why cantwe just sometimes revert to back in the late 80s, whereby, if you needed to get hold ofsomeone, you would Aphone them(landline that is), B-go past their home, C-youwould write them a letter and D-if you were not able to get hold of them, then choosethe latter. What is it you say? Being patient and just wait till you get hold of them. I hearyou sayingbut listen hunny, you would not be lying in bed with your laptop andwriting this article if it werent for the advancement of technology) Yes, yes, I hear you,but at least if you had capped your internet, you can write as many emails and stillwait to send themYou get where I am going with this right?

The point is, we have become so vulnerable by technology and mobile phones and all

the easy communicating tools it projects and in some instances money savingselements. To this I have no objection and it does make a helluva a lot of differencewhen needing to get hold of someone. In private time that is. You know, the time forsilly talk with your friends etc.Getting me to my next pointBlackberry was definitely not on tops of my list (smile, being objective here in my pointok-BB) but it seems it is a world one cannot escape, in fact it is almost the Facebook ofmobile phonesfor the masses.Like I was saying, I wasnt ever to confirm to this formof technology, but sadly after numerous request and miss opportunities to connectwith some really fabulous individuals, made me wonder about this world that everyonewas raving about.

The one thing I didnt want to do, was to look as if I was being controlled by someremote of some sorts, as if you notice people on Berrys it looks like their heads andnecks are pulled by a string, there is one solid movement (head tilted forward), fingerson the go, earphone in the ears and it looks like they are sometimes talking andthinking out loud. These very same individuals have eyes on the side of their heads andyou can spot them miles away.Berry in one hand walking at a rapid pacemultitasking, mind, messages and themselves. One thing I do have is control! Ivelearned to master social situations, Berry stays hidden away, I switch it off and ifsomeone really bores.well, then that is just a whole different story! Happy Berry-ingeveryone.The new Torch has been around for a while in SA Ooh I think I need anupgrade!

The trouble with men and women is that there are so many published

On a date I tell her a little about me ! Not too much , There has got to be morethan meats the eye .When we go out its to a busy place so I can see if she looks around at otherguys , if I'm interested and loving her company ill suggest let's go somewhere alittle more up beat .MY RULES

    DK,SA

When you meet a girl and you fancy her and ask herout on a date, what rules automatically applies to

taking her out on that date?

Do you have a strategy that you use after a date?

When you like a girl, do you play mind games? Ifno, explain and if yes explain why?

How long after a date, will you give a girl a call?

    1. Ensure she is the focus of my attention and although I will leave some element ofmystery, I will try to reveal as much of the real me as possible. But ultimately its all

about making sure we both have a good time.2. wouldn't say it was a strategy but more so a natural instinct. If I like a girl, then I must

have her lol my instinct is to always get what I want ;)3. Yes indeed, mind games are all part of the process. The girl needs to know that

although I am chasing her, she hasn't got all eternity to make up her mind, as Imyself will be the prey for many another women.

    4. f I haven't received a call or a text within a few days then I will call. Not a pesteringcall but just to show that I am interested and if she is not then fair do. But I'm not oneto wait around for things to happen.

    DS,UK

    1. I definitely would take her to one of my favourite restaurants and get to her know her. Ialso look at the way a woman behaves whilst out of with me, this already gives meindication on a second date. If she is interested and flirts with me, will think abouttaking it to the next level. Plus she has to be fairly fitotherwise no date!

    2. If she was a bore, no second meeting, if she was fun, then definitely the 3 day rule3. I like my women to have a bit of edge, so if I fancy her, Ill keep her guessing in a

good way, if she gives, I give, if she play, I play!4. If I really like her, the next day to say what a great date I had, that she must enjoy her

week. That shows interest and this gives me a chance to plan my second date withher, as have given her a heads up!

I managed to grab a few questions and answers

from Jerome and this is what he had to say..

Hi Jerome, how are you? Hello, Im fine thanks!

We are excited to have you in SA, would this be your first time? Yes, this will be myfirst time in south Africa and I'm also very excited

Are you currently in Germany or travelling, as noticed you were in Miami on Twitter?Im in Germany right now, have some time off. No gigs, but lots of studio work.

I take it you went to WMC? No, I was at the ultra music festival, I had to play at Ultramusic festival and the FG pool party.

What excites you most about music and that feeling of, I am achieving lots? Thefeeling when I finish a song and I'm satisfied with the result, excites me a lot. Tocreate something new gives me always a good feeling.

Youve done some pretty impressive stuff, when it comes to producing, where doyou hope to be 5 years from now? I was asking my self the same question justyesterday night. Will keep you posted.

How does it make you feel, when a track like Hold that sucker down was pushedaside by current no 1 DJ Armin, but seems to make headways on the dancefloorsand a favourite amongst many dance followers? Well, I guess it shows me that I didsomething right ;) the original version of that song is a classic, I just gave it a new

    shape.

What are you currently working on? I did a remake of snap-cult of snap which willbe released this month on my label jee. The song is also featured on my mix cd for

the DJ mag April issue. The weekend heroes (producer- and dj friends from Israel)and me just finished a song which will also be released on jee later this month.

What can we expect from JIA in SA? A lot of new and unreleased productions anda dj set that will not allow anyone to just stand still around ;)

You have remixed quite a few tracks for Faithless. what are your views on Faithlessand their split? I just did one remix for faithless. The song was called sun to me.They split? Wow, I didn't even hear about this till now! Faithless is an outstanding

project, with a very unique sound. Sad to hear, that they split.

Your music is just super sexy- funny thing is oh and dont be disappointed (in myITunes, I have several tunes rated 5 starin fact yours didnt even know it wasyou) , you have only recently come to my knowledge, but your remixes and musicis powerful and sexywhat goes through your mind when producing suchfabulous tunes? Do you wake up and just think, today Im going to produce andtracktune as you put it and make sure that its one sexy deep, uplifting beat? Itwas a long journey and it took a bit of some life experiences to get to my own

sound. It didn't come overnight. It was more like learning by doing for years andyears. I released my first record in 1994 and If you listen to all my productions since

then, you will hear how I improved the sound from release to release..

I believe, DJs who play sexy beats are sexy themselves, let alone naughty! Areyou naughty? No...

Jokes aside, what albums have you done? Collaborations? Since I released myfirst record in 1994, I could write you a list of over 300 productions and remixeshere. Some of the stuff of the last years I did: remixes for Armin van buuren, Paul

van dyk, faithless, way out west, snap, guru josh (infinity 2008, I received a goldenrecord for my remix), escala (the winners of Britain got talent), above & beyond

    and so on.

Who are looking at working together with future wise? It would be great to workwith artists of other genres to create something new..I most certainly would like to see you get to the top, as I think you have talent andthere is room for new Producers/DJs to take no 1 spot, are you pushing for this?Im not pushing for this, but why not. Its always good to have a goal, right?

What other elements to JIA is there, it seems you have quite a bit on the go? Its allabout music and cars, I'm a never growing kid..

Where can we follow you? On twitter and facebook.or you can try to follow meat the autobahn, but you wont make it, lol

Thank you Jerome, we look forward to having you here, one last word fromyou..thank you very much and I'm looking forward seeing you all in southAfrica soonIt all began in Africa!!!!!!!

Finding Mr Right through online dating part 1

Its perfect for you! I cant believe I didnt suggest this before! Online dating isthe way of the future. Its for professionals and intellectuals who dont have timeto waste on stupid drunk bar pick ups and dating games. Besides, its an egobooster and one sure way for you to get over Nic*. This was how my (married)best friend convinced me, about a year ago, to join an online dating site. Seeingas my previous relationships, that came about through conventional methods,

had all failed miserably anyway, I thought why not give it a go? Who knows, maybe I would find my Mr Right along this new dating avenue. Whats the worsethat could happen? Right?

So that Saturday night my friend and I created my profile. It was just for funanyway, so to add a little humour we got creative with the profile description.Instead of going through the boring norms of describing what I would want mostin my ideal man, we made a list of all the things that I did not want in a man. Webased this list on bad habits and experiences from my previous relationships andof course gross things I wouldnt want to come across in future. A few on the list

included not wanting a man who has his exs name tattooed on his body, has ahomeless mother, has flesh tunnels, nylon shorts, a mullet, a third nipple or snores(unless he was really, really good looking, in which case I could make anexception of course!) We uploaded a nice pic or two and gave a briefdescription of my physical attributes (all true of course)and then I startedbrowsing for my favourites

Boy, oh boy was this getting fun! It was like having a catalogue of men to choosefrom. I could pick them at any age, height, hair and eye colour and even theirbody build! You could even read up on their occupation, level of education andincome (assuming they were honest about it) I was in single girl heaven! Iadded a few cuties to my favourite cart that night. One guy, who nicknamedhimself Brusky*, had a very nice profile description and he looked cute too, sowithout hesitation I added him to the sausage cart

...I had no idea just how much my single life was going to change over the next fewmonths. This was the start to a whole new chapter of dating experiences! I startedgetting hits on my profile and fans by the dozens!!! My friend was right, I loved theattention! I had numerous mails streaming in day after day! I didnt even have topay for membership because there was always a kind gentleman who wouldsurprise me by buying a gift subscription! This was so much fun

As previously mentioned, one of the guys I added to my favourite cart wasBrusky*. He saw that I was a fan of his, made contact with me and that was how westarted our online chat! Brusky* was delightful to chat to and was really funny! Hewas such a sweetie but at the same time sexy and flirty too! Our online relationshipeventually reached a point where it either had to materialise into an actualmeeting or fizzle outso he asked me for my cell number so that he could phoneme to invite me out on a date. He had the sexiest voice I could have imagined tomatch his sweet face, which made me even more eager to meet him

What should we do? he asked. Assuming he would suggest dinner or drinks, or

something normal along those lines, he hit me for a six when he asked want to geta DVD and cuddle? Heh? For our first date? Did I hear that right? Did he just askfor cuddles? I dont think so buddy! So I replied with a flirtatious giggle, Maybe onanother night, once we get to know each other a little better? Why dont we go fordinner or drinks?Cool, lets meet at my house. We can have a drink there and then go grab a biteto eat he suggested. I wasnt too keen to meet at his house, but agreed anyway...

He was much taller than I expected, but luckily his face matched the one he usedthe website! That was a relief! After we greeted in the driveway he led me aroundthe back of the house through the garden to his roomhe still lived at home withhis mom! He was really excited about having his own private entrance and saidthat he was living there because mom was lonelymmm. Did I forget to mentionhe was 32 years old? What a disappointment!

ReviewBy Nina ZaniAah, we love Cape Town! There are so many fabulous places and spaces that pop upand that just means we have to explore more!

I have to laugh though as this particular venue has been around for a year (so much forbeing in the know), and with a name like French Toast who would've thought! In factwhen I received the invitation to FT, I actually thought we were going for French toastand champers....hmmmm! Typical!

Yip darlings, there is an amazing tapas and wine barand they do have a great main

food menu available too and it's called French Toast. Situated near upper Bree Street, infact the old Mardi Grass (dress up store) and opposite Boss Models, will you find thislittle piece of heaven for the slightly more older, discerning crowd and who enjoys goodmusic, good food and great atmosphere!

We were of course invited to event - "Travelling Tunes by Tess Prince - who is aiming athosting eclectic parties playing an array of music to which you will find Tesss style oftunes pops up anything from the 50's up to the latest beats! The event was to cater to allindividuals especially promoting a gay friendly environment, thus creating a ratherunique open afternoon for everyone to enjoy!

French Toast is an amazing venue. Carefully selected and styled ,it most certainly is avenue where you'd be visiting late Saturday afternoons or just after work drinks butdefinitely a place that must be visited!

It can be slightly pricy, but dont fear, as it is worth the spend....

Well definitely be going back and experience the nigh time vibe, so well keep youposted!
