Off the BenchUWSP’s bench has been a key contributor to its early season success led by Myranda Tyler. The sophomore leads the bench in points (7.8), rebounds (4.0) while recording a team-high 1.1 blocks per game. Liz Althoff scores 5.7 per contest and Taylor Bahr adds 2.3 rebounds while scoring 3.6 points. Of the team’s 69 points per game average, 23.4 come from reserves.

UWSP also holds opponents to 25.6 percent from three, first in the WIAC. Tyler leads the team in blocks with 16 and Olp (32), Barber (16) and Allen (16) lead the way in the steals department. As a team, UWSP averages 10.6 steals per game, 6.9 for opponents, and 3.4 blocks per game, 2.2 for opponents.

Increasing the MarginIn 14 games, UWSP has already gained a 16.6-point scoring margin as each of its victories but one came by 14 points or more. It has scored 60 or more points in every game but one and 70 or more on seven occasions. The Pointers’ 33-point victory against Finlandia University was their largest margin of victory since Jan. 29, 2011, when they defeated UW-Superior by 46 points, 95-49. Last season, the Pointers’ average margin of victory was 16.2.

Sharing the WealthPart of UWSP’s early season success is it is distributing the ball very well. The Pointers average 16.8 assists per game, led by Bandow (3.6 per game) and Olp (3.5). Bandow recorded six assists against UWRF and followed up with a career-high eight on Saturday against UWEC.

Twenty PlusThe Pointers have amassed 20 or more wins in 10 of the last 11 seasons. Their high-win total during that stretch was reached in 2001-02 going 30-3 and winning their second national title.

UW-Stevens Point RosterThe Pointers roster consists of four seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen.

Up NextUW-Stevens Point returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts two home games next week against UW-Platteville on Wednesday and UW-River Falls on Saturday. Along the way to the championship, Egner also guided the Pointers to a 66-60 victory over four-time defending Division III champion Washington (Mo.), snapping the Bears’ 70-game home winning streak.

UW-Stevens Point won back-to-back WIAC titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05. In 2003-04, the Pointers also captured their first ever WIAC Tournament crown, as Egner was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

In 2007-08, the Pointers finished third in the WIAC regular season standings, but became the first non-No. 1 seed ever to win the WIAC Tournament crown with wins at Whitewater and at Eau Claire, as Egner was again named Coach of the Year. Pointers are a league-best 137-39 in the WIAC over the past 11 seasons.

Egner came to UW-Stevens Point from Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, La., where she served as a graduate assistant.

A native of McFarland, Wis., and a 1980 graduate of UW-La Crosse, she began her coaching career as head girls’ basketball coach at Shiocton (Wis.) High School. After a one-year stint as the girls’ freshman coach at Monona Grove (Wis.) High School, she became head girls’ coach at Waunakee (Wis.) High School, where she led the Warriors to a five-year record of 115-40, including conference titles in 1985, 1986 and 1987 and state tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987.

Following the 1986-87 season, she was named the WBCA District Five Coach of the Year and was chosen to coach the Class B South Team in the WBCA All-Star Game in Madison.

Egner, who was the chair of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Committee from 2006-08 overseeing the national selection committee, is the senior women’s administrator.

2011-12 #19 UW-Stout Blue Devis Roster

Head Coach Mark ThomasOverall Record: 418-237Seasons: 25thAccomplishments: The 2011-12 marks the 25th season as the coach of the UW-Stout women’s basketball team for Thomas. Thomas took over a perennial loser in 1987, inheriting a team that won only two games in the two seasons before he joined the Stout staff. Since then, he has combined relentless recruiting with a run-and-gun philosophy to make the Blue Devils one of the most successful - and exciting - small college teams in the nation. The Blue Devils are consistently in the top 25 NCAA Division III programs in attendance.

Thomas, who is the dean of WIAC women’s basketball coaches, has a 418-237 record, the second most wins of any coach in WIAC women’s basketball history.

Thomas has made a habit of getting the best out of his players. Over the past 20 seasons, the Blue Devils have finished in the top four of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) - one of the top NCAA Division III women’s basketball conferences - 18 times.

In 2007, the Blue Devils won their fifth WIAC title, and Stout advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the ninth time. Thomas was named the WIAC coach of the year, the sixth time he earned the honors, and was also named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) coach of the year for Division III women’s basketball for the second consecutive year.

2011-12 Record Overall Record: 4-10 WIAC: 0-5 Home: 3-2 Away: 0-6 Neutral: 1-2

Last Week: In the Blue Devils’ only game last week, they saw an early lead dissolve against UW-Eau Claire, falling 77-43 on the road. UWS jumped out to an early 14-9 lead, however, after the Blugolds tied the game at 18, they went on a 15-0 run and never looked back. Katelynne Folkers led the team with 11 points while Kayla Windt chipped in with 10.

The Blue Devils: UW-Stout comes into the contest with a 4-10 overall mark and 0-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Blue Devils were picked to finish sixth in the WIAC after coming off a 2010-11 season where they posted a 10-15 overall record and 5-11 in conference play. UWS returned nine letterwinners and three starters off last year’s team. The Blue Devils suffered a significant loss earlier in the season when they lost All-WIAC selection Sami Schoeder to a season-ending injury.

Players to Watch: Whitney Rawdon leads the way for the Blue Devils as she leadsthe team in points (9.8), rebounds (5.7) and steals (24). Kayla Widnt is the leader in the assist department at 1.9 per game and adds 4.5 points and 2.9 rebounds. Freshman Katelynne Folkers also contributes with 5.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and has tallied 19 steals on the season.

Head Coach Lois HerrenOverall Record: 218-260/166-158 at UW-La CrosseSeasons: 19th/13th at UW-La CrosseAccomplishments: Heeren is in her 13th year as the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse head women’s basketball coach in 2011-12.

Before taking over as interim head coach 12 years ago, Heeren served as an assistant at UW-L during the 1998-99 season. “UW-L has a strong tradition of academic and athletic excellence and we will strive for excellence with the women’s basketball program,” says Heeren.

She led the Eagles to an at-large bid to the 2011 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament. It marked UW-L’s first appearance in the national championships since the 1987-88 season.

The Eagles finished 20-8 in 2010-11, their most victories since 1987-88 (22-7). The team also tied a school record for most Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) wins with a 12-4 campaign in 2010-11. UW-L tied for second in the league, its best finish since 1987-88 (second).
