HMV staff: We won’tmove till we’re paidHMV Cork staff todayvowed to stage a sit-inat the store for as longas it takes to get thewages they are due.
Around 10 staff at thePatrick Street music storeslept overnight in the buildingafter starting a sit-in protestyesterday.
The staff fear they may notget paid for wages owed fromDecember 14 to January 16after the high street chainwent into receivership.
Alan Bennett, who was storemanager at HMV PatrickStreet, said today: “The moodovernight was one of solidar-ity and togetherness.”
The company employsaround 300 people in Irelandand went into receivership onThursday, closing its 16 Irishstores indefinitely. A buyer isnow being sought by its ap-pointed receivers, Deloitte.
Mr Bennett expressed frus-tration with the receivers.
He said: “Until yesterday, when we began the sit-in, theyweren’t returning my calls. Then last night I was told thatif we left the store today ourwages would be in on Friday. And if we don’t leave, we couldhave to try to claim wages
through an insolvency fund. But we’re not going until themoney is in our accounts.”
HMV Cork assistant man-ager, Barry Power, said staffwere “gutted” over theclosure and feared for theirlivelihoods.
“We’ve all got rent or
mortgages to pay and a few ofthe staff have young kids.
“We just want to know thatwe’ll get the money we’reowed and we’re prepared todo whatever is needed untilwe get an answer,” he said.
Jonathan Flynn, a securityguard at the store, said staff
had been left in limbo. “Wecan’t apply for the dolebecause technically, we’renot unemployed and we can’tquit or resign because we nolonger have an employer,we’re just in limbo.
“We’re in this together andwe’re planning to stay putand rally support until we getsomething in writing.”
Local politicians haveexpressed support for theHMV workers.
Carrigaline Sinn Feinrepresentative Donnchadh ÓLaoghaire has called on theGovernment to engage withthe receivers to ensure theworkers get paid. He said theworkers had been left “highand dry”.
