INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the world of Fighting Fantasy role-plalng!

You and your friends are about to embark on anepic quest, one that will take you ftom the splen-dour of Kallamehr, across he treacherousGulf ofShamuz, and into the sweaty southern ungles ofAllansia. Throughout your quest, you will bechased, aunted, led ashay, bedevilled and gener-ally harassed y the most unpredictableof enemies

the Riddling Reaver. This gameworks well with threeplayers andone

GamesMaster),better with {our players, and bestwith five players, which is probably also the max-imum number desirable.

In order to use his book, you must have FEfttirTj'Fantasy The ntroductory ole-pLnlmg amebySte'/e

rules of the Bame, and details of equipment and soon that players have. If you are the GamesMaster, then you should make sure that you are familiarltrth the FightingFantasy ystem before starting torun the game. You will also find it very usehil tohare Out of the Pll, the compendium of FightingFantasymonsteis, and lifar, the gujdeto theworldof Fightin8 Fantasy.

This book contains four adventures for you toplay. To get the most out of them, you should play

FORTHE GAMESMASTER

The Riddling Reaver s a being with many guises.Amongbawdy yokels, hewill seem o bea rumbus-tious fellow of mirth and merriment. When at thecoult of some noble, however, he will be fult ofcharm, chivalry and courtly etiquette- the perfectdiplomat.

This chameleonicability hasallowed our schem-ing fliend to blend into rnany communities/wherehe has gleefullyspreadchaosand disorder, tuined

brotheragainstbrother, and alwaysescapediustice. All this he did in the name of his mastels, theTrickster Gods of Luck and Chance(see lfafl fo!more details). But now he is plofting a schemesogrand, so apocal'?tic, so downright devious, thatdredastardlyBalthusDire would wince with abjectjealousywere e o hea!of tl

Creative GamesMasterint

There will be timeswhen the adventurersdecide odo somethingwhich is notcoveredby the text.Hereyou mustdo somecreativeGamesMastering this sexplained fulthe! on pages 19-20 of FightingFafl-

tasy). To give you some more help, here are a fewdo's and don'ts:DO male sure the playe$ understandhow to fight

and use their equipment bet "e the adventurebeBins, since explaining the rules during thegamecanbe terribly boring.

DON'T get frustr:ated f the players are not doingexactlywhat you expect hem to; afterall, it is heil

advenfure.DO make sureyou know what all the magical tems, potionsand spellsdo; but don't grve heir secretsaway to the playelsuntil itis necessary.

DON'T play too long! It is far better to make thegame a series of diff-hangers than have it peterout,

DO tell your players to keep accurate ecords oftheir sKrLL,srAMrNAald Loc< scores, swell astheir possessions.

Restorint srAMrNA and LUcK

The four scenarios n this book are packed withhazards, and adventurersmay flnd that they losesrAMrNA and LUCKquite quickly. It is importantthat you give them the opportunity to replenishthese scores, otherwise they will die before they geta chance o complete he story.

Both srAMrNA and Luck can be lestor€d bymagic (spells, potions or scrolls). They may alsoberecovered in other ways. srAMrNA may be in-creased y eatingProvisions. As explainedon page

42ol Fighting Fantasy you should allow adventurersto eat Provisionsat any time that they may reason-ably do so (in other words, not in the thick of battle).Players should keep track of how many Provisionstheir characterc have by means ol their AdtmtureSheets.

r u c x may be recovered through ltct ,oarses(seepage 4o ol Fighting Fdnfasy). If a player comes upwith an idea that is particularly fortunate for theadvenfurers, then you should award them betv\reen

1 and 3 points of LUCK.This may nevef take theirLucK above ts /fliti,?l evel.

Equipment

Each adventurer will begin the game with the fol-lowing equipment:

A sword

A backpackA coil oI rope10ProvisionsNo potionsNote that additional equipment maybe obtained

during the adventures. All equipmentcarriedby theadventurerc should b e ioted dow^on the AiluefiturcSheet.

Adventure Structure

To make things easier for the GamesMaster, thestory has been split into four separateparts (or Acts,as we have called them). Each Act opens with aPlayers' Tale(whichis to be read out) and a Games-

Master'sn e(whichis to give yor an idea of what theAct is all about). The Acts are split into Scenes,

which follow the format rused n Fi4hting Fantasy.

For example, in Act One, the adventurers lace

around various locations in Kallamehr, trying to

Iind the items required to fulfil their quest. A set oflocations that fit together males up a Scene. TheScene will be illustrated with a rnap, showing the

locationswithin it. These ocationswill have num-

bered references so that you can find your way

around them easily. Each Scenewill have Tasks. Vvhen the adventur-

ers successfullycomplete the Tasks, the Scene s

over, and they may proceed o another Scene.A.lthough the Acts are designed to be played in

order, it is possible to play them individually. In

some cases ou can change he order you play the

Acts in, so that Act Two follows Act Three, forinstance.

The Players' Tale, and any other section which isprinted in italics, is to be rcad out to the players.

Crealur€s n the Adventures

Consult it if you need further details about a mons-ter, or want to introduce other fionsters.

Creatules in the adventures will not always fightto the death. One way in which you canbe kind toyour players is by havurg monsters flee when theyare getting low on srAMrNA, or when their allies

have been killed.Unless otherwise stated, all creafurcs in the

advenfureshave arrlttacrs scoreofone,

New Rules

Here are a few additional rules which experiencedGMs may like to add to their games or that exha

touch of realism.

Unconsciousness

In a solo Fighting Fantasy book, should your s rA M-rNA scoie be reduced to zero, then you die. How-ever, since in a multi-player game you have com-radeswho can come to your lescue, t is fairer to

allow you a chance of suffival. So, f your sr-nvrNa should be reduceo ro zero, you are merely unconscious.f your <rnrvrna isreduced to -1, then you have been mortallywounded, If your sraMrNA is -2 orless, you havebeenhacked o pieces, and there s no hope or you!

UnconsciousharacterswiJJwale up after a num-ber of minutes (roll two dice to find how many). When they wake up, they will have 1 point ofsTAMINA.

Mort tW wounded characters require assiatancefrom others. Potions or spells are the only way ofreviving a mo*ally wounded character. Theseshould be used to raise the characte/s srAMrNAabovezero. If they are unsuccessful, repoor char-acterhasbled to deathl

Note that these rules about unconsciousness onot apply to the players' opponents.

Wenpons

It stands to reason that hitting someone with anenormous battle-axe is going to hurt far mote than

poking them with a black puddtng. ln FightingFantasy all weapons were trcated as the same, tokeep the game simple and fast-paced. Some Games-Masters, however, may like to add that extra edge ofrealism to their games by varying the amounts ofdamage that weapons inJlict. In the system pre-sented below, damage will be deteimined by iollinga ctte.

The table below shows the damage done by aselectionof death-dealing mplements, commonlyused by adventuretsand monste$ alike. To use t,firct locate the relevant weapon on the chart. Thenread along to find out how the roll of a die willdetemine the nurnber of srAMrNA points lost bythe opponent for every successfulAttack Round.Note that a sword, an advenfurer's standardweapon, still does heusualu points,

asdoesamacefanother avourite).

*Adventurer iehtsat -1 s(rl-rt Adventurer Ii-ghtsat - z sxr r r-

For example:Mhagi the Thiasher is wielding awicked morning star (aspikedmetalball on the endof a length of chain). Since it is difficult to controlsucha weapon, his sKrLL of 7 is reduced o 5. IfhisAttack Strength s greater han his opponent's, herolls a die and consults he above able o find outhow much damage he does. Suppose he is in adesperatebattle with Lord Zlargh: f he rolls 5 or 6,

modify ordinary dice so that they give the damagefor particular weapons. You could, for example, haveablue die fora spear.Youpaintout the dotsonthis blue die until there are two faceswith one dot,two faceswith two dots and two faceswith three

Ce ain creatures will use weapons, in which casethey will also have the opportunity to roll dice fortheir damage. If they are using a claw, orsome otherweapon not listed above, then they will do tlrcstandard 2 points, unless their description tells youotherwise.

Mighty Strite

There are times - either by incredible luck or by defttiming - when an adventurels blow will sttile with

extra force, oi find a weal chink in an opponent'sarmour. o account for this, GamesMastemmaylike to inhoduce MiShty Strikes o theitrBalr.e

A Mighty Strike occuls when a chaiacter in abattle rolls double six for his Attack Stlength. Whenthis happens, the character autotarically mottallywounds the opponent (i.e. the opponent's srAM-rNA 5 reduced o -1).

Magic

To add extra spice to the advenfures, you may allowon? of the adventure$ to be a wizard. Because hehas spent so much time poring over dusty tomes, and had so litde exercise, his characterwill have theminimum srAMrNA scoreof 14.Sincehe hashad no

trahing in weapons, his sKrLL scorewill be foundby rolling one die arld adding 4, rathe! than the

usual 6. However. he makes uo for this with animDoitant extra characteristic -his vecrc score.Roil two dice and add 6. Enter this in a MAGrc boxon the characte/s.Adrre[fxrlel,eef.t determines owmany spells the adventurer rnay nse in eochAct.Beforc the adventure commences, the wizard'splayer must choose which spells he will have fromthe list below. Every time he uses a spell he mustcaosst off his list. He maychoosemore than one ofeachspell.Wizards should beware:somespellsmaynot work on some opponents!

Spell-casting Hit or Miss?Spells do not work automatically. There is always a

chance of failure, even for the greatest of mages.Whenever a wizard tries to cast a spell, he shouldroll three dice. If the rcsult is less tafl his MAGrc6core, then the spell will work co ectly. II the resultis equal o or gredter ha, his MAGrc score,however,somethin8 has gone wrong. The GamesMastershould decidewhat happens: t may be that the spellsimply fails; or, worse still, it may misfire and affect

the wizard or his comrades. For examDle,a mis-firing Creatue Copy spelJmight createaiopy of thewizard himseu, who would then proceed to enga8ethe unforfunate sorceaer in a raucous argumentabout who was the real wizard! Misfires should behumorous rather than deadly - thele is enoughdanger in the adventures already!

Even if a soell misfires, it should still be crossed

But the duplicatewill be under the controlof the wizard's will and he may, for example, n-shuct it to attack the original creafureand then sitback and watch the battlel Stondard ratiorr.

The most obvious ways of putting a stop to the

Reaver/s machinations involve throwing thingsover the crowd of ReDlicanths. A Powdered Crea-ture, thrown into the pool of water in front of theReaver, would come to life and ahack him by sur-prise.
