Easy Steps Toward Green Driving
(NAPS)- “Green driving” may be easier – and more important – to achieve than many people think. It’s important because, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, highway vehicles account for 28 percent (1.5 billion tons) of U.S. CO2 emissions each year. Fortunately, even if getting a “green” or emissions-friendly vehicle isn’t in your budget, you can still reduce your car’s footprint on the planet. Here are some tips to consider: • Stay tuned. Keep your car in shape by following the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance. Fixing a vehicle in need of a tune-up can improve gas mileage up to 4 percent. • Take care of your tires. Make sure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Keeping your tires aligned and balanced can also improve your vehicle’s fuel economy up to 3 percent. Don’t inflate your tires to the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Properly inflated tires are safer and will last longer. • Replace a clogged air filter. If you have an older vehicle with a carbureted engine, replacing a clogged air filter can improve your fuel economy up to 6 percent. Air filters keep impurities from damaging the interior of the engine, so replacing the dirty filter will save gas and protect your engine. • Upgrade your motor oil. Try high-performance synthetic oil. Premium automotive products such as Royal Purple synthetic oils are formulated with unique advanced additive technology that can improve the performance of the vehicle and allow for longer intervals between changes. With fewer oil changes, not only are you keeping the water and ground clean by reducing waste of used oil, you’re saving money by spending less time in the shop. Royal Purple motor oil has been reported to reduce fuel consumption by as much as 5 percent compared to ordinary petroleum-based or synthetic lubricants. It’s also been shown to produce notable horsepower and torque increases, so you can switch to an environmentally friendly product without sacrificing performance. • Recycle. Ask your oil change installer about recycling used oil. If you do your own oil changes, find a place that will accept your used motor oil. Royal Purple has partnered with Earth911 to provide recycling centers that take items such as used motor oil bottles, motor oil and oil filters. Learn more at www.fueleconomy.gov and www.royalpurple.com. To find a nearby recycling location, visit www.earth911.com. Upgrading lubricants can improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.

(NAPSA)-As many scientists have discovered, doing
medical research is a bit like climbing a mountain.
You start off all full of vigor and then as the way gets
steeper, the climber gets wearier-but the goal, reach-
ing the peak, is still in sight. Similarly, people trying to
find treatments for cancer often start with a great idea
but then find themselves slogging through difficult
experiments, needing funds and equipment and so on
while still trying to reach their goal of improving and
saving lives.
An Intriguing Line of Research
For example, a cancer patient, John Kanzius, came
up with an ingenious theory: Tiny pieces of metal can
be sent to cancer cells and then hit by a radiowave at
a low, controlled frequency. The radiowave will heat
the metal, destroying only the cancer while leaving
surrounding tissue unharmed.
Kanzius and Dr. Steven A. Curley, now the lead
researcher of the Kanzius Noninvasive Radiowave
Cancer Treatment, worked on controlling radiowaves
with a special device that they learned could heat
metal and kill cancer-in petri dishes.
How It Works
After multiple studies that helped differentiate the
unique proteins of a cancer cell from those of neigh-
boring healthy ones, researchers could find and
destroy the cancer without side effects.
The Next Steps
Now, the Kanzius Cancer Re_search Foundation is
trying to continue the research to see if this treatment
can work in people.
Generous donations meant it was able to begin clini-
cal testing using three new, large radiowave devices
(GenV), capable of performing human treatments.
After further experiments, data collection and analysis,
it's hoped the FDA will give the Foundation the go-
ahead for human trials-taking it a long way up that
mountain to save lives.

Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation, visit

Researchers say cancer cells can be destroyed by
zapping them with radiowaves that won't harm healthy
tissue.

HELOISEʼS KITCHENEERING BY HELOISE It’s Not Just for Toast
Dear Heloise: With so many different jams and jellies to choose from, I don’t just use it on toast anymore. Here are a few of the ways I use JAMS, JELLIES AND PRESERVES:
• If you have no fresh fruit, use a tablespoon of jam or jelly on oatmeal in the morning.
• Take the top rind off your favorite brie cheese, cover with jam or jelly and bake until warm.
• Mix your favorite flavor with cream cheese and serve with crackers at your next party.
• Add to yogurt. I hope other readers will try some of
these tasty hints. -- Kelly T. in New York BOILED DRY
Dear Heloise: The directions for my coffee maker state to dispose of the glass coffee carafe if it has been boiled dry. I am wondering, why? -- Andree M. in South Dakota
Very good question, and an important safety one also! If a coffee carafe has boiled dry, the concern is from what is referred to as “dry-heating.” After this has occurred, the glass may have been compromised, causing it to crack the next time you go to use it. Rather than have that happen, it is recommended that you replace the glass carafe immediately. -- Heloise
CLEANER PANS Dear Heloise: When I boil dry beans
(pinto, black beans, lima, etc.), I thoroughly wash my stainless-steel cooking pan, using hot water, soap and a nylon scrubbie. However, the pan always dries with an ugly, whitish film covering the inside bottom surface. I just
cover the bottom with a little white vinegar, let it stand for a few minutes and re-rinse. The pan dries bright and sparkling! -- A Reader in Oregon
Isn’t vinegar amazing? There are so many ways to use it around the house (and it’s inexpensive and eco-friendly). I have even more vinegar hints and recipes available in a six-page pamphlet, Heloise’s Fantabulous Vinegar Hints and More! You can order one by sending $5 and a long, self- addressed, stamped (70 cents) envelope to: Heloise/Vinegar, P.O. Box 795001, San Antonio, TX 78279-5001. Next time you boil potatoes, add a small amount of vinegar to the water. This keeps the potatoes white while keeping the pan from turning dark! -- Heloise
DRYING SPONGES Dear Heloise: We purchased a metal
wire napkin holder, which we keep near the kitchen sink. Wet sponges stored in the napkin holder dry thoroughly.
Of course, we live on the front range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Relative humidity of single digits is not uncommon. Having the sponges off the counter with airflow on all sides should help in any climate. -- Marcus R., Colorado Springs, Colo.
BUGPROOF Dear Heloise: Most instant rice and
potatoes come in boxes with a pull-out spout. After opening, I cover the entire end of the box with a sheet of clear plastic wrap and secure it with a tight rubber band around the box. No spills, and it keeps bugs from getting in. -- Mike in Kansas

PAGE 12 - CONSUMER NEWS...Where Results Cost Less! - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014 page 2 2014 Bridal Directory There’s no doubt about it. The Internet has changed life considerably and connected people on a larger scale than ever before. Whether by computer, cell phone or tablet, the majority of Americans have access to the Internet, and if they don’t, they know someone or someplace that does. Young or old, people are becoming more Internet savvy. With the Internet permeating so many lives, it should come as no surprise that some brides and grooms today are choosing to extend invitations to their wedding by email. While tradition generally dictates wedding invitations arrive by postman, some brides and grooms are bucking the tide and going the email route. Reasons vary from the need to be green to the need to be cost savvy. It’s true. Sending wedding e-vites saves paper and keeps costs down. Some guests, however, may find it tacky. As with anything, there are pros and cons to wedding e-vites. The biggest benefits to wedding e-vites come in convenience, time and money. You don’t have to set aside a specific time to go to a card shop and browse through dozens of samples. You can browse online for wedding e-vite designs from the convenience of your own home at any time you desire, and
when you find a design you like and you’re ready to send it, you can do it in a matter of minutes. You may have to spend a little time personalizing the design beforehand, and you may even have to pay for it, but you won’t have to pay for it to be printed, nor will you have to pay for postage. And with more brides and grooms choosing this route, wedding e-vite designs have improved considerably, with some arriving by virtual envelope and opening in the same way that a printed invitation would. Of course, in order to send wedding e- vites, you will need your guests’ email addresses. Not everyone has an email account, and even if they do, they may seldom check it and miss out on your invitation altogether. You will have to take that into consideration, along with the amount of time it will take you to gather everyone’s email addresses. For a rather large wedding with hundreds of guests, gathering email addresses and entering them into your system might not be the best use of your time. For a rather small affair with tech- savvy guests, wedding e-vites might be ideal. Not only can you be sure guests will receive your invite, but you can make it easier for them to retain the information and act upon it. That’s right. With wedding e-vites, you have
the option of including additional information, from easy RSVPs to wedding registry links. If you want, you can take your wedding e-vites a step further and incorporate them into a wedding website. That’s right. You can create a website with all the details of your wedding and post a link to it on your e-vite. One click of the link will take guests directly to your wedding website and provide them with everything they need to know from where the reception hall is located to what will be served for dinner. You can update the site regularly to keep guests informed and their questions answered. While wedding e-vites might sound like a good idea, your guests will ultimately be the deciding factor. Not everyone is tech savvy, and even if they are, they might not appreciate a wedding e-vite. Some people prefer the look and feel of an actual wedding invitation they can hang on their bulletin board or tuck away in a scrapbook. Consider the abilities and tastes of your guests carefully. You may just find that a compromise would work better. Perhaps you could send out printed invitations and provide a link on them for guests to check out your wedding website and RSVP online. You’d save a little money and offend fewer of your guests.
Wedding E-Vites, Really? By Tresa Erickson
Buy It, Sell It...call Classified 576-6721 -CONSUMER NEWS - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014 - PAGE 13 2014 Bridal Directory page 3 Of all the elements involved in the planning of a wedding, the selection of the bridal gown can be one of the most time consuming. The search for the perfect dress usually gets underway soon after the engagement has been announced and continues for weeks and sometimes months afterward. If you have recently gotten engaged, here are some tips to help you with the search. SSttaarrtt eeaarrllyy The sooner you start looking for a wedding dress, the better chance you will have of finding just the right one and the accessories to go with it. You will also have plenty of time for alterations. And should you choose not to buy a gown off the rack and customer order one instead, you won’t have to worry about it not arriving in time.
BBee ooppeenn Don’t pick the dress. Let it pick you. Go ahead and page through all of those bridal magazines. The more you know about what’s out there, the better idea you’ll have of what you want. But don’t limit your shopping to any one style, color or designer. Just because a particular style of dress looks good on the page does not mean it will look good on you at the store. You want a gown that not only appeals to your tastes but flatters your figure. BBrriinngg aa gguuiiddee Find a trusted friend or family member willing to go shopping with you and help you decide. You need someone who can give you an honest opinion of each dress you try on, good or bad. Choose someone who will tell you what they think, not what you want to hear. SShhoopp aarroouunndd Take several days to check out the selection at various bridal shops and try on as many

styles as possible. Ask if you can take photos of the gowns that really interest you. If not, bring a notebook so that you can jot down the name of the gowns you like best and where to find them. Don’t trust your memory to keep track of what you like and where to find it. KKeeeepp aatt iitt Continue your search until you find the perfect gown, and when you do, stop! Purchase the dress right then and there and turn your attention to the other tasks on your to-do list. Don’t continue to shop on the off chance you will find something better. Chances are you won’t, and when you return to the store to purchase the dress of your dreams, someone else may have already beat you to it. Shopping for a gown can take a lot of time. While some
brides come upon the dress of their dreams within the first few hours of shopping, most don’t. Prepare for the task to take a while and enjoy!
PAGE 14 - CONSUMER NEWS...Where Results Cost Less! - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014 2014 Bridal Directory page 4 You have so many things to do before your wedding day that you can’t imagine getting everything done. Everyone has their own stories, good and bad, of what they did and maybe you should consider doing this, that or the other for your wedding. You are getting stressed out, which doesn’t make you happy in what should be a happy time. You need to realize that planning a wedding can be stressful and be prepared to deal with that fact. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that everything will go perfectly. This will only add to your stress when things don’t. Focus on what you have to work with, not on what you don’t have. Everyone will have their own ideas about your wedding, but keep in mind you can’t please everyone. You and your spouse-to-be are the only ones you need to please because it is your wedding. In order to deal with stress, you need to recognize it. Symptoms include headaches, moodiness, poor concentration, stomachaches, problems sleeping, racing thoughts and irritability. Should these symptoms persist or get worse, they could indicate a more serious condition, so pay attention to what your body is telling you. After you have acknowledged you are feeling stressed, there are a few things you can do to cope with it. These include: • Space out deadlines and set them far enough ahead to allow for problems. Don’t let everything go until the last minute. • Delegate responsibilities to people you trust. Check in with them occasionally but let
Chill! By Ronda Addy
them handle things. • Set boundaries and be assertive. If others are interfering too much or taking up too much of your time, let them know how you feel without being too aggressive. • Don’t take everything so seriously. Try to laugh when things go wrong. • Spend time with your spouse-to-be. Discuss everything and make sure the wedding plans are going the way you both want them to. • Stay healthy. Get enough sleep, eat right and exercise. Avoid outside stimulators like alcohol, drugs, caffeine, nicotine and sugar. • Take a breather when necessary. When feeling stressed, practice some relaxation or meditation exercises or go for a walk. Don’t be afraid to talk to others about how you are feeling. • Pamper yourself. Go to the movies, read a book, take a bubble bath or spend a day at the spa. • Keep your activities in check. It’s only natural for others to be excited for you and want to get together to celebrate but don’t overextend yourself with too many social obligations. If you don’t have time to get together, let others know that. Your friends will understand that you are busy. With so much emphasis put on the wedding, it can be easy to forget that the event is just the beginning of your marriage. Your wedding will be over within a matter of hours and then the real work will begin on creating a long, successful marriage. If your wedding isn’t perfect, it’s not the end of the world. In fact it, it might make it more memorable, so go with the flow, as they say. Don’t let things get to you and keep your stress under control.
Keep It Small By Teresa Erickson While some couples go all out and invite everyone they know to their wedding, others opt for a smaller, more intimate affair. Although they can be less costly, small weddings are not always easy to pull off. Whittling the guest list to a select few can be difficult and cause conflict among family members. If you would like to keep your wedding small, you need to be aware of the pitfalls and approach the initial planning with tact. You must decide first just how small you want your wedding to be-10 people, 20 to 40 people, 100 people? The smaller your guest list, the more lightly you will have to tread. There will be people who expect to be invited to your wedding and they will be hurt and angry when they do not receive an invitation. You can accommodate for this by having a large bridal shower or post-wedding party and inviting everyone not invited to your wedding to that. With number in hand, you can turn your focus to whom to invite. Depending upon how small your target number is, you may have to make some hard decisions like excluding extended family or children from your guest list. Whatever your decision, be prepared for conflict. No doubt there will be some hurt
feelings. There might also be pressure to change your mind and have a larger wedding. Don’t give in. It is your wedding. If you want it to be small, you should have it that way. After you have completed your guest list, make a list of everyone you couldn’t invite and find a way to let them know why they weren’t invited. Send them a note, shoot them an e-mail or give them a call. If you intend to have a large bridal shower, you may be able to wait until then to let everyone know that you will be having a small wedding. When letting others know of your decision, be tactful. Let them know that while you would have liked to invite everyone, you chose not to for personal, financial or other reasons. Reassure them that they are still very much a part of your life and thank them for everything they have done for you. In spite of your best efforts, some people will not understand why they were not invited. They will be hurt, angry and disappointed, so much so that they may refuse to attend your bridal shower or post-wedding party. Try not to let it get to you. Give them time to cool off and focus on making your wedding the best that it can be. Choosing to have a small wedding is easy; implementing the idea, on the other hand, takes work. Be prepared and forge ahead with a smile on your face.
