1. INTRODUCTION

Joint meeting of the Regional Ozone Networks for Europe & Central and South Asia, Istanbul, Turkey, April 2010

Meat industry PIK Vrbovec (established in 1938) opened the most modern production plants in the south-east of Europe in 2008.

The old factory used ammonia, but the system had the charging of about 30 tons.

New plants after the reconstruction of the old cold stores and refrigerating systems and the installation of new plants with the total cooling area of 25.000 m2, has charging of about 20 tons. The total cooling capacity of plants is 10 MW.

For the freezing cold stores and tunnels a direct ammonia refrigerating system is used.

For production cold stores, where people work an indirect ammonia refrigerating system with four chillers is used.

SAFE OPERATION

All connections and valves of the ammonia distribution system are in the technical hall, outside of cold stores.

In case of ammonia leakage (200 ppm) water sprays are used and the ventilation system is turned on. The absorbed ammonia is stored in special tanks.

Students’ technical excursionA common practise of the faculty (FMENA) is to take students for study visit of

refrigerating plants. The visit was very useful to students because they could see how modern systems using natural refrigerant operate.

CONCLUSION

Joint meeting of the Regional Ozone Networks for Europe & Central and South Asia, Istanbul, Turkey, April 2010

For the past few years with installation and reconstruction under way, production has been increased by 3 times, and the total charging of ammonia has decreased by one third.

Ammonia as a natural refrigerant is the first choice in industry refrigerating systems

Ammonia system in meat industry PIK Vrbovec with the charging of almost 20 tons is a sample application with safe and efficient operation.

In the reconstruction of old cold stores and refrigerating systems in meat industry PIK Vrbovec and in the installation of new plants with a total cooling area of 25.000 m2 all new standards have been applied .
