Power over Ethernet productsPower over Ethernet (PoE) integrates power and data onto one single cabling infrastructure, eliminating the needto have AC power available at all locations. Power and Data is integrated onto the same cable, supporting category5/5e up to 100 Meters. During power failures, PoE ensures continuous operation of remotely connected devices,such as IP telephones, wireless LAN access points and IP security cameras, when used in conjunction with acentralized uninterrupted power supply (UPS). PoE is already widely adopted in the market, saving up to 50% ofoverall installation costs by eliminating the need to install separate electrical wiring and power outlets.

IEEE 802.3af is the global standard for remotely powering Ethernet devices over LAN infrastructure. The standarddefines the specifications of delivering power over standard Ethernet cables, and stipulates the way to designEthernet power sourcing equipment andpowered terminals. The standard involvesdelivering power over existing cableinfrastructure, including Category 5, 5e, patchcables, patch-panels,and connecting hardware.A PoE system comprises a PSE (PowerSourcing Equipment) and a PD (PoweredDevice). The PSE may either be an Endspan(i.e. a Layer 2 Ethernet Switch) or a mid-span,while the PD is a PoEenabled terminal (suchas an IP phone, Wireless LAN access point,etc.). Power may be delivered over either datapairs (1/2 as "ñ" and 3/6 as "+") or spare pairs(4/5 as "+" and 7/8 as "ñ") of standard CAT-5cabling. IEEE 802.3af power sourcingequipment contains a detection mechanism toprevent powering of non-compliant devices. Only terminals that present an authenticated Power over Ethernetsignature based on the 802.3af standard will receive power, preventing damage to other equipment.
