Standards Cells
Standards Cells have been established in Belgium since 1998.
Standards Cells educate and inform businesses, mainly SMEs, about standards and their importance for competitiveness.
The activities of the Standards Cells aim at • informing companies about published standards and standards in
preparation;
• facilitating consideration of SME interests in the drafting of standards;
• assisting individual companies with their research, interpretation and standards application problems.
They are supported financially by the FPS Economy via the Standards Bureau (NBN) to which it has delegated that task.
Currently, 24 Standards Cells have been set up within 8 collective centres.

Proposed Services
Assisted search to identify the standard you want, to select the appropriate standard(s) taking into account the targeted application(s), to provide an overview of existing standards and/or regulatory texts in a particular field.
Analysis support to establish a list of relevant normative documents on a given topic, to highlight the correspondence between normative documents of various origins (Belgian, European, international, foreign standards), to address the relationship between normative documents and regulation.
Standard/Regulation watch to keep you informed at an agreed frequency, about changes in standards and / or regulations on a specific topic that you would have previously defined.

WHY are standards important ?
Standards do
• make the development, manufacturing and supply of products and services
more efficient, more reliable and safer
• facilitate trade between countries by removing technical barriers and make it fairer
• potentially lead to cost reduction through open competition
• provide governments with a technical base for health, safety and environmental legislation, and regulation
• share technological advances and good management practice
• facilitate the dissemination of innovation
• safeguard consumers, and users in general, of products and services
• make life simpler by providing solutions to common problems
• ...

ISO/TC 229 – Scope
Standardization in the field of nanotechnologies that includes either or both of the following
• Understanding and control of matter and processes at the nanoscale, typically, but not exclusively, below 100 nanometres in one or more dimensions where the onset of size-dependent phenomena usually enables novel applications,
• Utilizing the properties of nanoscale materials that differ from the properties of individual atoms, molecules, and bulk matter, to create improved materials, devices, and systems that exploit these new properties.
Specific tasks include developing standards for: terminology and nomenclature; metrology and instrumentation, including specifications for reference materials; test methodologies; modelling and simulations; and science-based health, safety, and environmental practices.

ISO/TC 229 – Interactions
In 2008, ISO/TC 229 resolved to establish a Nanotechnology Liaison Coordination Group and approved its terms of reference as stated below :
« To provide a Forum to help coordinate and harmonise the work of relevant technical committees and other organizations in the field of nanotechnologies and to identify cross-cutting gaps and opportunities and ways to address these . »
