Voluntourism: A growing alternativetravel option among retirees
Dear Savvy Senior,Can you write a column on volunteer vacations? My
husband and I are both in our 60’s and are interested intaking a service-oriented “altruistic” vacation this sum-mer but could use some help.
Retired TravelersDear Retired,If you’re looking to do more on your vacation than relax
in the sun or go sightseeing, volunteer service vacations –also known as voluntourism – are a great alternative and agrowing trend among retirees. Here’s what you shouldknow.
VoluntourismNowadays, you don’t need to join the Peace Corps to
travel to exotic destinations and serve others. Many organi-zations today offer short-term volunteer projects overseasand in the U.S., lasting anywhere from a few days to a fewmonths.
Common program themes include teaching English, working with children and teens, building and repairinghomes and schools, and assisting with community or envi-ronmental projects. In addition, volunteer vacations alsogive travelers the opportunity to experience the culturemore fully and connect with the local people – much differ-ent than your run-of-the-mill sightseeing vacation.
Most volunteer vacation groups accept singles, couplesand families and you don’t need to speak a foreign lan-guage. Costs typically range from around $700 to $1,500 aweek, not including transportation to the country your siteis in. Fees typically cover pre-trip orientation information, room and board, on-site training, ground transportationonce you get there, the services of a project leader, and acontribution to the local community that covers materialand services related to the project. And, if the organizationrunning your trip is a nonprofit, the cost of your trip, includ-ing airfare, is probably tax deductible.
Where to LookWhile there are dozens of organizations that offer volun-
teer vacations, here are some good ones that attract a lotof retirees.
• Earthwatch Institute (earthwatch.org, 800-776-0188): Aglobal nonprofit that offers one and two-week expeditionsthat focus on environmental conservation and field researchprojects all over the world.
• Globe Aware (globeaware.org, 877-588-4562): Offersone-week volunteer vacations in 15 different countries.
• Global Volunteers (globalvolunteers.org, 800-487-1074): Offers a wide variety of two and three-week serviceprograms in 18 countries, including the U.S.
• Road Scholar (roadscholar.org, 800-454-5768):Formally known as Elderhostel, they offer a wide variety ofvolunteer service programs both in the U.S. and abroadusually to the 50-plus traveler.
• Habitat for Humanity (habitat.org, 800-422-4828):Offers a variety of house-building trips through its GlobalVillage Program and RV Care-A-Vanners program.
How to ChooseWith so many different volunteer vacations to choose
from, selecting one can be difficult. To help you decide, youneed to think specifically about what you want. Ask your-self: Where you want to go and for how long? What typesof work are you interested in doing? What kind of living sit-uation and accommodations do you want? Do you want tovolunteer alone or with a group? Do you want a rural orurban placement? Also consider your age and health. Areyou up to the task, or do you have any special needs thatwill need to be met?
Once you figure out what you want and spot a few vol-unteer vacations that interest you, ask the organization tosend you information that describes the accommodations, the fees and what they cover including their refund policy, the work schedule and work details, and anything else youhave questions about. Also, get a list of previous volunteersand call them. Don’t sign up with a group that won’t supplyyou with this information.
Other TipsIf you’re volunteering outside the U.S. find out if any vac-
cinations and/or preventative medications are recommend-ed or required at cdc.gov/travel. Also, check to see if yourhealth insurer provides coverage outside the U.S. Manyhealth policies (including Medicare) don’t pay for medicalexpenses outside the border. If you’re not covered, youshould consider purchasing a policy (see quotewright.comor insuremytrip.com) that includes emergency evacuationcoverage.Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Working in partnership with the community to enhancethe quality of life and helping to create a healthy, vibrantenvironment inwhich to live, work, and prosper.
Shop Local, Employ Local a benefit to many teensErdman's County Market has been featured on the Shop Local page for a program they started in the late 70s
that benefits churches and non-profit organizations. Church organizations and non-profits receive one half of1% of the total Erdman's cash register receipts submitted.
Another important aspect of shopping local is the fact Erdman's is one of the largest employers in the com-munity and has provided thousands of part-time jobs for high school and college students over the years. Storemanager Mike Langan, who has been at Erdman's 33 years, said there was a record high 17 K-M senior gradu-ates working at the store this year. In all, there were 21 recent graduates, including one college grad and highschool graduates from Byron and Triton.
In all Erdman's has 45-50 students working at the store part time. "The store has always hired a lot of kids.We couldn't run this place without them," said Langan. "They are an important part of our business."
Shopping local enables employers like Erdman's to hire additional staff and that provides more job opportu-nities for young people in the community.
Langan said he has two large cabinets with files of past employees. A high percentage of them were studentsand he believes they easilynumber in the thousands.
This is another way ofhow shopping locally canstrengthen our community."We are fortunate to have somany teens who want towork here," added Langan.
Have you ever stopped to thinkhow many times the dollar you spendat the grocery store, the drug store, the market or hardware store changeshands in your community over a peri-od of time?
You'd probably be greatly amazedat the number of times the "buck" ispassed around locally before some-one drags it out of town.
Early Saturday morning a dollarwas spent at the grocery store for acarton of milk, bread and breakfastfood. After a short stay in the grocer'still the dollar's next stop was the pay-check of one of the clerks. The clerktraded the dollar to the drug store forsome items.
The druggist used the dollar andsome others for payment on his taxesat the bank. The dollar did not stay atthe bank very long before it started
moving again-this time to cash a milkcheck.
Best available statistics tell us adollar will change hands as many as20 times a day. If that were the casethe dollar accounted for $20 worth oftrade volume and put $20 worth ofservice or goods into people's hands.
If 100 people had one dollar in thenext hour and all decided to spend thedollar out of town instead of here, itwould matter a good bit. If we do notworry about the single dollars andfigure ways of keeping them workingfor the community then we'll never beable to keep the $100 at home either.
“A good slogan to paste on thewall may be-Don't pass the buck to abig city merchants-keep it at work athome.” Ralph W. Walker, DCI pub-lisher
50 years ago
These 2012 K-M gradu-ates have at least one thingin common. All 17 areemployed part-time atErdman's County Market inKasson. In all Erdman'shad a record high 21 grad-uates, including one col-lege grad and seniors fromTriton and Byron. Photocourtesy of Cheryl Bauer.

Brandon had a plaque at the front of the tractor that describedwhat it was and at the bottom read, "In memory of Bud Zabel". Bud gave the tractor to hisgrandson Brandon and he restored it. Brandon said his favorite part of restoring the trac-tor was painting it so that it looked like new again. Photo by Randy Carlsen.

The old saying, "Time flies when you'rehaving fun" certainly fits for Tim Stenzel of
Mantorville who started his own business,Preferred Heating & Cooling five years ago.
Two weeks ago Tim and his wife Audrey and employees Tim Borge and JasonSmith hosted an open house at Daniel's Northwoods Lounge to celebrate fiveyears in business. Tim said he does not regret making the move and has grown tohave two vans on the road.
Tim Stenzel had worked in the heating and cooling business 20-plus years anddid service work for 18 before deciding to go out on his own. He figured it mademore sense to go on an after hours call for his own business rather than for some-one else. You could say he "preferred" to be on call in his own business.
Doing service work during a difficult economy has been a big part of helpingmake the business successful and grow. He offers service and maintenance ofheating, ventilation and air conditioning for residential and light commercial sys-tems. He also does new construction for HVAC (heating, ventilation & air condi-tioning) and can install energy-efficient equipment eligible for energy rebates. They use TEMPSTAR heating and cooling products.
With the hot summer days and nights Tim recommends that property ownerswith central air conditioning have the units cleaned and checked. A cleaning canmake a difference in how much more efficiently a unit runs, especially when itruns day and night during periods of hot weather.
Tim has been in the management and sales end of the business, but most of hisexperience is in service where he has had continuous classroom training over theyears plus years of hands-on experience. He is EPA certified in refrigeration andattends annual manufacturer meetings on new technology and updates on HVACequipment.
What Tim enjoyed most as an employee and now as owner is serving the cus-tomer, taking care of their needs and seeing they are satisfied with the work."Working with and for the customer is something I have always liked about thisbusiness," said Tim.
Time certainly doesfly and Tim would liketo see the next fiveyears go just as well.Tim also contends theyhave many good cus-tomers who havehelped their businesssucceed. Having arepeat customer speaksfor itself.
PREFERRED HEATING & COOLING CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS IN BUSINESS
Tim and Audrey Stenzel of Mantorville, owners of PreferredHeating & Cooling, celebrated five years in business with anopen house at Daniel's Northwoods Lounge last month. Timand Audrey are pictured with their two employees, Tim Borgeon the left and Jason Smith on the right.

John's SuperValu Foods sold to Sunshine FoodsJohn Tidemann started in the grocery business as a carry
out boy in a SuperValu grocery store in Albert Lea, the townwhere he and his wife Rita grew up. Forty-eight years laterJohn, 62, and Rita, 60, will try and shift gears and settle intoretirement after leaving their seven day a week duties in thegrocery business.
John's SuperValu Foods has been sold to Sunshine Foods,a partnership that owns and operates 12 stores in Iowa, SouthDakota and Minnesota. Partner Vern Bennett said plans are todo a complete remodel and expand the store by some 6,000square feet. In 2011 Sunshine Foods purchased grocery storesin Chatfield and Spring Valley.
John and Rita had a plan for retirement in place and whenSunshine Foods approached them in the fall of 2011, theymade the decision.
Forty eight years in the grocery business was not JohnTidemann's intent either. He initially wanted to go to schoolfor forestry because of his love for hunting and the outdoors.Plans changed.
Rita and John Tidemann, married 20 years, and own-ers of John's SuperValu Foods in Dodge Center, will turnthe keys to the store over to Vern Bennett of SunshineFoods next week.
When John started as acarry out boy in Albert Leahe said, Jack, the store man-ager was a good influence onhim and his future in the gro-cery business. "He told methe harder I worked the morehours I would get," saidJohn. "That really hit homewith me."
The "work hard" com-ment motivated John toeventually move into man-agement for Red Owl. Heworked in management at allthree Red Owl stores inRochester, including the onethat opened in the ApacheMall. "Moving around to thedifferent stores helped medeal with people and learnto work with employees,"said John.
John bought a store inCresco, Iowa with a partnerand had that Red Owl fortwo years. Then came theopportunity on Main Streetin Dodge Center when hebought the Red Owl and thestore name changed to John'sRed Owl.
John has been in businesshere 34 years, the last 18 atthe new store, at 20 AirportDrive South in DodgeCenter. They operated thenew store for seven yearsbefore the four lane highwaywas built which made theirstore location shift to a sec-ondary road (Old Hwy. 14) .At the time John said heknew once the highway relo-cated it would affect hisbusiness. Not knowing whenthat would happen, theTiedmann's decided they hadto make the move out of thedowntown area.
After 34 years of businessin Dodge Center, John andRita insist the biggestchange has been the technol-ogy, which has been a goodthing. "The way people eathas changed. They buy morefood that is already pre-pared," said Rita. John saidpeople are also more priceconscious in a tough econo-my and they look for health-ier foods.
Five years ago John was critically injured in a hunting acci-dent when he fell out of a tree. That turned out to be quite asetback. He is lucky to have survived the accident. Being oneof the hardest workers and leading by example, was allchanged by the accident.
"When you own a small business you work and live it 24hours, seven days a week," said John. When John and Rita gohome at night the work goes with them. Rita will do the pay-roll and bookkeeping and John works on the next ad.
As grocery store owners, John and Rita said they arethankful for a great deal. They say the community has beengood to them. "When you're here seven days a week you getto meet good customers," said Rita. The employees have alsobeen like part of the family. "We're simply the leaders," saidJohn. "It's the 22-30 employees who make this business go."
At the age of 15 when John started as a bag boy frozenpizza was introduced to the freezer section of the grocerystore. Now John and Rita will introduce themselves to retire-ment. They plan to spend more time at their second home ona lake in Wisconsin and with their seven children, 17 grand-children and three great-grandchildren they have betweenthem. Looking ahead with anticipation Rita said, "It will bea big change for us."
