#4:

•GA state legislators were bribed by 4 land companies who wanted to purchase “Yazoo lands” cheaply (1 ½ cent per acre) from GA.

•Legislature created the “Yazoo Act” which gave GA permission to sell land.

•The land companies marked up the price of the land and sold it back to GA citizens and groups, but it was still a good value.

•News broke that legislators were bribed. Public was outraged, and the Yazoo Act was repealed and the crooked legislators were voted out of office.

•The Yazoo lands were supposed to be returned to the state, but many people didn’t want to hand back over land they bought. They decided to sue the state of GA (US Supreme Court).•OUTCOMES: The federal govt. bought up all the invalid land claims from the land buyers for $4,000,000, and the Georgians in Yazoo lands had to leave. GA was paid $1.25 mil. dollars for the remainder of the Yazoo territory, and Georgia’s new western boundary became the Chattahoochee River. The federal govt. also promised to help remove Natives Americans so white could have more land.
