1-2 Population Growth• How rapidly is the human

population growing?– Exponential growth

(increasing at 1.3% each year)– Questions to think about

• Should we be concerned with the increasing world population size?

• What should be done to slow the rate of growth?

– Developed vs. Developing Countries

1-3 Economic Growth, Economic Development, Poverty, and

Globalization• What is economic growth?• What is economic development?

– Economic growth may be one aspect of economic development but is not the same•Economic growth:

– A measure of the value of output of goods and services within a time period

•Economic Development:– A measure of the welfare of humans in a society

– A small proportion of the population can own a large amount of the wealth in a country

1-4 Resources• What is a resource?

– Resource – anything obtained from the environment to meet human needs and wants

• What are perpetual and renewable resources?– Perpetual – a resource that is renewed continuously – expected to last as long as

the sun lasts– Renewable – a resource that can be replenished in a fairly short amount of time

(hours to decades) – forests, wild animals, fresh air…

• What are nonrenewable resources?– Nonrenewable – a resource that exists in a fixed quantity; can not be renewed

within a human time scale – Energy resources (coal, oil, natural gas), metallic minerals (iron, copper,

aluminum), nonmetallic minerals (salt, clay, sand)

How can we prolong the use of nonrenewable resources?

• Reduce • Reuse• Recycle• Refuse

Page 7: 1-2 Population Growth How rapidly is the human population growing? – Exponential growth (increasing at 1.3% each year) – Questions to think about Should.

Reduce

• Using fewer resources• Examples:

– Drive less (reduce consumption of gasoline)– Turn lights off (reduce consumption of

electricity)– Buy fewer newspapers (reduce consumption of

paper)– Use a refillable mug, instead of a single-use

coffee cup (reduce consumption of paper or polystyrene)

– What else?

Page 8: 1-2 Population Growth How rapidly is the human population growing? – Exponential growth (increasing at 1.3% each year) – Questions to think about Should.

Reuse

• Use a resource over and over again in the same form

• Examples:– Use an old soda bottle as

a water bottle– Use an old computer box

to store your “Star Wars” collectibles

– Use plastic grocery bags as trash bags

– What else?

Page 9: 1-2 Population Growth How rapidly is the human population growing? – Exponential growth (increasing at 1.3% each year) – Questions to think about Should.

Recycle

• Reprocessing a resource into a new product

• Examples:– Aluminum cans (recycled into new cans)– Paper (recycled into newspaper)– Plastic milk jugs (recycled into toys,

fencing, etc.) • What else?

Page 10: 1-2 Population Growth How rapidly is the human population growing? – Exponential growth (increasing at 1.3% each year) – Questions to think about Should.

Refuse

• Don’t use the resource altogether • Examples:

– Don’t take free samples that you won’t use (t-shirts, pens, lanyards, etc.)

– Don’t buy products that use non-recyclable or non-reusable materials

– Bike or walk, rather than drive– What else?
