VOORWOORD / FOREWORD
van so ‘n reusagtige fees. Die 2014 Kunsfees het seepglad verloop. Baie Dankie vir al die inskrywings en ondersteuning.
What is different in the 2015 syllabus? A whole list of things has changed. First and foremost, certain categories have
been expanded to ultimate creative limits. This was done to accommodate pre-school, primary, secondary schools and
adults. This having been said, it is clear that the Arts and Culture Festival brings along some competition within certain
categories. This implies that candidates will focus and master various techniques to utmost perfection in their preparation
process.
More specialist adjudicators are hired for 2015 to aid with the continuous flow of the festival and to uphold our high
standards. More venues have been added in order to accommodate more sessions per day which will also assist in the
general flow of the physical daily adjudication process. Sessions will begin 09:00 sharp every morning until 17:00 in the
afternoon with lunch between 13:00 and 14:00. There will be a good variety of food stalls on the premises for the duration of
the Arts Festival. Tea times for adjudicators are optional. Evening concerts (indoors and outdoors) are scheduled from
18:30 onwards.
‘n Verdere verandering is die uitleg van die terrein weens die talle kunsuitstallings wat gedurende die week van die
Kunsfees gaan plaasvind. In die aande (asook gedurende die dag) gaan daar ook werkswinkels in die vorm van
meestersklasse aangebied word deur verskeie beoordelaars en deskundiges. Daar sal ook (soos alreeds genoem)
konserte plaasvind in die aande tydens die week in aangeduide lokale asook buitelug vertonings/konserte. Hierdie program
sal later bekend gemaak word. Ons is nog besig met onderhandelinge en het nog nie finale uitslag op beplande funksies
nie.
This is a very short summary of the festival in 2015. PLEASE take some time and read this booklet properly. Pay
attention to general issues. DO NOT take things for granted. You might be pleasantly surprised as I have
implemented some very strict rules and regulations for certain matters in the syllabus. This is done not to irritate
anyone. It is implemented to make your visit a very pleasant experience. Read the information boards all over the
Festival grounds. They are there for a reason. Take some time and put in some effort to read the notices, signs
and especially THIS BOOKLET. Everything you need to know is covered in this booklet. Should a program run
late, or early it would be shown on the information boards outside all the venues. I have planned and designed this
Art and Culture Festival in meticulous detail keeping in mind the mistakes of the past and devised ways to eliminate these
little mistakes. It should be one Festival that you will remember for a very, very long time. The learners will enjoy each and
every moment of it.
Enjoy the experience!

Sundays River Primary School no later than Monday 22nd June 2015. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS. You receive this syllabus (unlike other festivals) well in advance. There is
no reason to submit late entries.
7. The Festival Officer reserves the right to combine classes or cancel any class due to insufficient entries.
8. Entries that exceed the stated time limit will be penalised and the adjudicator reserves the right to stop a performance
that is overrunning.
9. There will be ONE Festival appointed photographer on the premises every day for the duration of the festival. A
photographer from the Press will also visit the festival during the week and will publish photos in the newspaper/s.
NO OTHER PHOTOGRAPHY, SOUND or VIDEO RECORDING is allowed during performances as they can distract
performers as well as infringing copyright and our child protection policy.
10. Mobile phones must be switched off inside the venues.
11. No smoking is allowed inside any of the venues. Please use the sand holders outside the various venues. Do not throw
buds all over the premises.
12. Audiences are welcome to attend all events and their support is greatly appreciated by the performers,
particularly in classes where the entries are small. Not only can you enjoy several hours of music, dance or
drama, but you also have the opportunity to hear a professional give valuable advice and guidance. NO
ADMISSION FEE will be charged during the adjudicating phase for audiences except for workshops, master
classes and evening public concerts when audiences will be expected to pay the entry fee of R20.00.
13. Those in the audience are expected to behave appropriately, e.g. not entering or leaving the venue while a performance
or adjudication is in progress and above all remaining silent while others perform and when the adjudicator or stewards
speak. Anyone deemed not to be behaving appropriately will be asked to leave; no refund will be given in this case.
14. Teachers, Parents/Guardians are responsible at all times for the welfare of the children/young people in their charge.
The Festival does not hold itself responsible for any injury sustained by any candidate or member of the public whilst on
the Festival Premises.
10 15. Please ensure that all entrants are placed in the correct classes. Once the programme has gone to press it is
difficult to make changes.
16. Presentation is an important part of any performance, so consideration will be given to entrants who, for example,
introduce their pieces clearly and acknowledge applause at the end.
17. Any complaints relating to the festival should be sent to the Festival Organiser in writing. Any queries regarding a
session should be directed to the Festival Organiser.
18. The decision of the Adjudicator is final. He/She shall have the power to withhold any award if, in his/her opinion a
performer not reaching a sufficient standard.
19. See the various categories for detailed rules and regulations.
20. We expect all candidates to adhere to the rules of the Festival. The rules are stipulated for a reason. See under THE
VARIOUS CATEGORIES for a detailed outlay thereof.
21. Candidates should not wander around in the school building. Bathrooms for boys and girls are clearly marked. We
expect absolute silence in the corridors as the rest of the school’s day to day activities continue in normal fashion.
22. Adjudication will commence every morning exactly 9:00 and will continue throughout the day till 17:00 in the afternoon.
23. Lunch will be served to all adjudicators between 13:00 and 14:00.
24. Various stalls/stands will be available on the premises and will operate every day for the duration of the Festival.
Some of these stalls will we be open until 21:00 in the evening.
25. Teachers/group leaders should report to the secretary on duty outside the venue on arrival. The secretary will
inform teachers about on-site and actual developments at that specific moment. Information boards will be
available outside each and every venue with a detailed list of the happenings inside the venue. It will also be
marked with colour pencils to ensure that everybody is aware of the session progress.
26. ALL TEACHERS: All teachers are invited to enjoy bottomless cups of coffee and tea in the Staff room for the duration
of the Eisteddfod FREE OF CHARGE. We also provide sandwiches and other delights for teachers in the staff
room. Please help yourself. This is an added extra that I have arranged for teachers. There are also lots of wooden
benches all over the premises. Sit and relax.
27. MOST IMPORTANTLY: There is a shop across the road from Sundays River Primary School. NO CANDIDATE is
allowed (without adult supervision) to leave the premises of the Festival. This is a farming, citrus and tourism area.
Massive trucks, busses and tractors are constantly on this road. The Festival nor Sundays River Primary School will
take any responsibility for any accidents that might happen during the festival. Headmasters, Teachers and
Parents/Guardians should pay careful attention to this. Should the Organizer notice children moving across the road to
the shop, I will assume that permission was given by the child’s parent/guardian or teacher. High School pupils should
NOT send younger children to the shop. There is NO reason to visit the shop. There are plenty of food stalls on the
school premises. You can pick and choose what you want to eat and drink. Furthermore, children should stay clear of
the swimming pool area. The swimming pool is not a VENUE. You do not belong there. Access gates to the pool will
be locked for the duration of the festival. It is end of winter. It is still very cold. There is no need to wander around at
the pool.
11
ADJUDICATION / BEOORDELING
ADJUDICATORS / BEOORDELAARS
Die Kunsfees akkommodeer ‘n magdom beoordelaars vanoor die hele Oos-Kaap in 2015..
Candidates should be properly informed that the function of the adjudicator is not to pull him or her apart, but instead, to give
valuable criticism based on what they’ve heard during a session. Some adjudicators have a special way to bring candidates
into a relaxed state before actual performance, whether with a smile or a friendly good morning or good afternoon. Others
appear extremely difficult and annoyed, but give candidates equally excellent advice and guidance. This is normal. No
human is the same. We all differ. These adjudicators are all experts and highly skilled in the various fields with years of
experience.
The identities of the adjudicator’s will not be revealed before the Festival. This information remains confidential
with the Festival Organizer and the Principal of Sundays River Primary School.
Some sessions will only have ONE adjudicator, other sessions may have two, three or even a panel of judges,
depending on the entries per session received.
The accommodation of the various adjudicators remains confidential.
The Adjudicators decision is final.
Any queries or comments that may arise from participation in the festival should be directed in writing to the
Festival Officer.
In general, adjudicators (in some categories) will adjudicate certain sessions according to certain general criteria
which they (at times) attached to the diploma together with their comments. Other adjudicators judge without this
criterion. NO ADJUDICATOR WILL EVER ADJUDICATE A LEARNER AGAINST HIGHER CRITERIA THAN
THAT OF HIS AGE OR GRADE. ADJUDICATORS ARE WELL AWARE OF THE AGES OF THE LEARNERS
AND THEIR CURRENT STANDARDS. THE ADJUDICATION PROCESS IS EXTREMELY FAIR AND OPEN.
Most of the adjudicators will give brief comments and suggestions when a session is finished. Others might even
give comments and suggestions immediately after individually. There is never any certainty about this matter.
This really depends on the adjudicator. This is truly valuable information. It is requested that all candidates remain
in their venues for the duration of their session. It is by watching others perform and hearing the Adjudicators
comments that maximum benefit is derived from the Festival.
Teachers are requested not to interfere with adjudicators. Please leave them alone. There are some
teachers that are very forward to approach adjudicators thinking that they know better. Adjudicators are here to
render their services to Sundays River Primary School. It should always be remembered that adjudicators
are not attending the Art Festival out of free will. They are in fact (for the duration of their stay) employed
and paid by the school and they will act according to the rules of the festival and school as explained and
discussed with them during the planning stages.
As far as humanly possible we aim to bring in adjudicators not known by the public and teachers. However, this is
not always possible. Certain adjudicators are well known, others are totally unknown to most teachers and
participants and others did excellent work during the past three Festivals and are brought back for 2015. We also
aim to bring in new adjudicators every year, but this is not always possible, but you can expect to see some new
faces during 2015.
Adjudicators are here for only one core reason: we should learn from their expertise and advice.
12
ENTRIES
Entry forms are not published separately. All entry forms appear within the syllabus immediately after each and every
session. Entry forms may be photocopied.
ALL ENTRIES MUST:
1. be made on the proper forms
2. be completed in full. Entries will not be accepted if incomplete.
3. be completed and signed (where necessary)
4. ensure that the handwriting is clear and legible
5. include all the names and surnames of the candidates especially where a group entry is made. In a group entry (except
speech choir, class singing and choirs) each candidate receives a diploma. We do not want to decipher the correct spelling
of names and surnames. All diplomas are printed according to the entry forms. Please ensure correct spelling of names
and surnames. This is very sensitive. If the Festival Officer is unable to read the writing, he will type the name or surname
according to his knowledge if he does not have a contact number of the teacher or candidate.
6. be accompanied with the appropriate fee. Entry forms without the fees will be rendered incomplete and will be
disqualified. (see the section of FEES above).
7. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. Please check the various opening and closing dates in this syllabus. It is
very important and the organizer has imposed extremely strict behaviour on the part of the Festival committee regarding late
entries. It will not be tolerated.
GENERAL:
1. A separate entry form must be used for each class and item entered.
2. Candidates who enter more than one item in a class must complete an entry form for each entry and accompanied by the
appropriate fee.
3. No changes will be accepted after the entry has been received.
4. It is not necessary for teachers/parents etc. to put the entry forms in a particular order. We sieve all entries into
categories (once received) according to age, category, session etc. as soon as we’ve received all entries from schools.
See the particular entry on the following pages regards special requests and transport.
4. Entry fees cannot be refunded.
5. If any performer finds it necessary to withdraw from any class, notification should be given as soon as possible to: Ms.
Daun Strydom at Sundays River Primary School by no later than Friday 7th August 2015.
6. “Own choice” selections must be specifically titled on the entry form. Otherwise, the entry will be considered incomplete
and will not be included in the schedule.
7. Entrants who withdraw at any time prior to a scheduled performance in a class will not be allowed to re- enter that class.
8. See the various categories for minimum and maximum learners that can be entered per session.

Sundays River Primary School Eisteddfod aims to provide a safe and caring environment for all its participants, and to
conform to current child protection legislation. The following constitutes the policy for Sundays River Primary School
Eisteddfod.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Art and Culture Festival to advance the education of children in Arts and Culture, by holding an
annual non- competitive festival and presenting public performances.
ENVIRONMENT
It is our policy to involve parents/guardians/carers and teachers in partnership with us, to ensure a safe environment at
the festival, insofar it is reasonably practicable.
APPLICATION
The policy relates both to children under the age of 18 and to those vulnerable adults who are identified to the
organizers prior to their arrival at the festival. The festival recognizes the needs of children who are disabled or from
ethnic minorities, and will seek to meet any specific needs notified to the festival in advance by
parents/guardians/carers or teachers.
PERSONNEL
The Art and Culture Festival at Sundays River Primary School is held by our Department of Art and Culture and is
assisted by private and full-time staff and volunteers, all of whom have independent references and are briefed about
the terms of this policy. Should any problem arise regarding the terms of this policy, it should be notified to the Festival
Committee, identifiable by badge, who will take appropriate action in a discreet manner.
PREPARATION
All participants in this festival will be expected to have seen this policy. In accordance with this policy, it is essential
that parents/guardians/carers not personally attending the festival be satisfied that their children etc. are accompanied
and adequately supervised by responsible adults acting on their behalf. The staff of Sundays River Primary School will
not undertake this role. With group entries, the group leader must ensure that all parents/guardians/carers are aware
of this policy. Each person signing the entry form thereby takes full responsibility for those entered by the form.
CHANGING AREAS
It is emphasized that the article above applies equally to changing areas, i.e. that responsibility remains with the
supervising adult in each case. Property left unattended is not the responsibility of Sundays River Primary School.
PHOTOGRAPHY
As previously mentioned in this booklet, no photography (including video photography) is permitted at the festival, other
than by accredited members of the press or appointed photographer by the Festival Organiser. Such photography will
always take place in a public place. Any parent/guardian/carer not wishing the individual (s) in their care to be
photographed must notify the photographer in good time.
CONCLUSION
All concerned are again reminded of the purpose of this festival. Sundays River Primary School and the Festival
Committee will not tolerate inappropriate behaviour from any participant. Participants should always keep in mind that
(although such Festivals can be lots of fun) any Festival of this kind is a learning process. We provide a professional
platform for all to showcase their respective talents and it should be respected as such.

Festivals. Please comply with it. This copy may not be returned.

SESSION: J
MODERN/CONTEMPORARY DANCE
This category is designed for the very young at heart that have positive energy, stamina, determination, fitness and
personality to make a real success of this session. Interpretation and improvisation plays a huge part here. Also known as
20th century concert dance. Modern dancers reject the limitations of classical ballet and favour movements derived from the
expression of their inner feelings. Modern dancers express their innermost emotions through dance, often becoming closer
to their inner selves. Before attempting to choreograph a routine, the modern dancer decides which emotions to try convey
to the audience.
Appropriate music should be selected for the dance idea or arrangement
Costumes should suit the dance idea or style
Focus attention on dance movement and dance composition
Accompaniment – Own choice. Electronic music should be saved on CD/DVD/MEMORY STICK in a recognizable
computer format like mp3 and handed to the sound engineer before the session begins.

SESSION: K
AFRICAN DANCE
African dance embodies athleticism and a graceful beauty flowing with rhythm. In Africa, dance is a means of marking the
experiences of life, encouraging abundant crops, and healing the sick soul and body. It is also done purely for enjoyment.
All ceremonial African Dances have purpose. They tell stories and relate history. The distinctive beat of powerful African
drums, energetic African dance – warriors, gumboot dancers, pantsula and township jive. A real slice of vibrant AFRICA!!!
The Art and Culture Festival of 2013 had seen some extraordinary African dance groups in this category. It was
phenomenal.
TEACHERS: Like some of the other categories, successful groups in this session will also be invited to perform on
the main stage at the Citrus Sports Day.
WELL DONE TO THE DANCE GROUPS OF KABEGA PRIMARY WHO WERE INVITED TO PERFORM AT
THE CITRUS SPORTS DAY IN 2014. IT WAS VERY CLEAR TO US THAT THE CROWD REALLY ENJOYED
YOUR PERFORMANCE! A SPECIAL WORD OF THANKS TO MS VIRGINIA GROENEWALD AND HER
HUSBAND FOR ALL OF THEIR EFFORT WITH THEIR DANCE GROUPS.
Candidates must ensure that the particular style is maintained throughout and the music and dress/costume is
appropriate to the dance subject.
Candidates/Groups that entered for one style may also enter for the other styles. Separate entry forms together
with the appropriate fee must be submitted.
NO ITEM MAY EXCEED 5 MINUTES!!!
This explosive and vibrant category ONLY FOCUS ON GROUPS OF 4 and more BUT NOT EXCEEDING 15.
Teachers must ensure that the names and surnames of candidates are clearly legible on entry forms. Each
candidate receives a Diploma.
If pre-recorded music is used, it must be saved in mp3-format on CD / DVD OR MEMORY STICK and handed to
the sound engineer before performing.
Groups that make use of African Drums etc. must bring their own.
Participants are free to compile their own groups. Groups may consist of any age and any grade.
STYLES TO CHOOSE FROM:

K1.2 Mapantsula (Kwaito)
K1.3 Township Jive
K1.4 Umteyo Dance (Xhosa shaking dance)

This is a warrior dance depicting men who fought in the battle, which is why the dance involves warfare movements. It is
supposedly an aggressive style of dancing and is characterized by a complex drum rhythm. The dancers stage mock fights
using horsetail as spears to stab the opponent. It is performed specifically at cultural events and at funerals. Agbekor is a
style of this particular dance type.
K1.7 DANCE OF POSSESSION AND SUMMONING
This dance type is used to summon the spirits of the world, namely than of ancestors, trees, forests and even deities. It is
performed to honour the spirits and as a means to ask for guidance.

KUNS- EN KULTUURFEES 2015 SKOUSPEL
FORMELE KONSERT / FORMAL CONCERT
It has been decided by the Festival Organiser and the Principal of Sundays River Primary School that this concert will not be
hosted in the evening as of 2015. Instead, the prestige concert followed by a very exclusive cheese and wine function will
be held on Saturday morning 29th August 2015 at Sundays River Primary School at 11:00 after which
we will embark on a relaxed and very special function in our Sport Facility where invited guests can indulge in excellent
cuisine in a very special and relaxed atmosphere with fires burning and we will also have an open bar for those wishing to
spend the Saturday with us. Big Screen Television will also be available. This decision has not been made lightly but was
decided upon due to various schools having other activities during the week in the evenings, parents that do not wish to
travel late at night etc. The solution was to change the evening function into a beautiful and relaxed function on a Saturday
morning when everybody is relaxed and can drive through at their own time and speed to enjoy the day with us with no
worries about time restraints, rushing traffic, dangerous night driving etc. This will also ensure that all invited candidates will
be able to attend this prestigious function.
During the adjudication process of the festival, the adjudicator secretary has a list of all performing candidates and all
awards are inserted next to each candidate’s name. However, teachers/parents and candidates will notice that the
organiser will be moving around from venue to venue and attend certain sessions. This is not done for the fun of it. The
organiser look and listen to candidates and might approach a teacher/parent/candidate directly to invite such a candidate to
the cheese and wine function. This invite will also be done formally to the principal of the school involved. At the end of the
festival, these lists are handed to the Organizer and candidates are then invited to showcase the complete festival. The
concert of 2015 will also differ as we will include less individual poems, and would be able to add more of the other
categories for example: speech choirs, choirs, class singing, modern dancing, African dance, Marimba Bands etc. We
would thus be able to cover the entire spectrum of the festival.
TICKETS:
Adults:
OPTION 1: ATTENDING CONCERT AND CHEESE & WINE FUNCTION: Tickets will be available at R120.00 per
person and will include the Cheese and Wine function afterwards in the Sport Facility. A list of bookings will be
available upon arrival at the entrance of the venue. You have to report to the secretary on duty before entering the
venue. The secretary will match your booking with her lists and will issue you with a ticket or tickets which you need to
present at the cheese and wine venue after the concert. REMEMBER: PLEASE MAKE YOUR RESERVATION WELL
IN ADVANCE. USE THE NUMBERS PROVIDED EARLIER IN THIS BOOKLET AND SPEAK TO MS DAWN
STRYDOM. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO PAY ON ARRIVAL.
OPTION 2: ATTENDING CONCERT ONLY: R50.00 PER PERSON. NO TICKET WILL BE ISSUED.
PARTICIPANTS: FREE ENTRY INTO THE CONCERT VENUE. PARTICIPANTS ARE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE
CHEESE AND WINE FUNCTION ONLY IF ACCOMPANIED BY THEIR PARENTS. NO ALCOHOL WILL BE SERVED
TO CHILDREN. PARTICIPANTS WHO WISH TO ATTEND THE CHEESE AND WINE FUNCTION MUST BOOK IN
ADVANCE @ R60.00 PER INDIVIDUAL.
NON PARTICIPATING CHILDREN (CONCERT ONLY): R20.00 per person. It would be wise to book in advance.
A Kiosk (snoepie) will be available on the premises for participants and non-participants whilst the adults are enjoying
themselves in the Sport Facility.
Adults, who wish to make use of the bar, must pay cash for their drinks. We only cater for Wines and Juice. Guests of
Honour will be invited in writing and may not include all the teachers involved as in the past.
51
VERY IMPORTANT: ALL TICKETS MUST BE BOOKED WELL IN ADVANCE AT Sundays River Primary School in
person or via the contact numbers available elsewhere in this booklet. Avoid disappointment and book your seat (s)
well in advance.
VERY IMPORTANT: When making a reservation, please inform the secretary whether or not you will be
attending the function in the Sport Facility after the concert. This will help us with the catering etc.
Braai packs will also be available for children and/or adults who wish to braai. This can be bought at the Kiosk
at R60.00 per braai pack which will include a “roosterkoek” and a salad. We will appoint someone that will be

CATEGORY B
SPEECH AND DRAMA / SPRAAK EN DRAMA
This category is divided into two (2) sessions: Afrikaans and English
Entrants may only present one (1) piece in each session. However, entrants may present a piece in English and
another piece in Afrikaans. Two (2) separate entry forms must be completed and the appropriate fee attached to
each entry.
Teachers are allowed to enter a maximum of 10 learners per session. Due to time constraints and large
volumes of entries we cannot (as in the past) allow more than 10.
Source material such as published novels, poems, plays etc. may be found in school or public libraries. Use of
South African work is encouraged and the use of the internet is allowed.
Entrants must not exceed the time limits provided.
Entrants should perform in school uniform unless the content of the work allows for other clothing to enhance the
work and/or to allow for a better and logical overall performance.
Closing date for all entries in this Category is on Monday 22nd June 2015
See the time limits for each grade.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We urge teachers and parents NOT to annoy adjudicators and audiences by teaching
candidates the same poems. It is terribly frustrating to sit and listen to 5 candidates reciting the same poem.
There is more than enough time for everybody to learn a poem of their own. Please pay special attention to this
matter.
Candidates are allowed to recite1 poem in Afrikaans and another poem in English if they so wish. Clearly mark
this on the entry forms to avoid confusion when sorting the entries and when the program is compiled. For
example: 1st Entry: Dave Davids – L1.6 (English)
2nd Entry: Dave Davids – L1.6 (Afrikaans)
In order to save time, space and paper, the entry forms has been designed in such a way to make it easier to enter for the
various sub-sessions per category. Read and complete them carefully.

SESSION: M
SPEAKING CHOIR (also known as Choral Verse, Speech Choir) SPREEKKOOR
The purpose of this session is to provide the opportunity for a group of speakers to perform a selected piece co-operatively
– and the effective communication of the selection using appropriate technical and interpretive skills. Choral verse speaking
offers great scope for young people to learn and perform together, with a unity of purpose, and is ideal for class groups. It
also encourages the development of confidence in: 1) speaking clearly and fluently, 2) interpreting a text, 3) working with
others, and 4) following directions.
For the purpose of this Festival we will only concentrate on the following TYPES of Speech Choir:
M1
CONVENTIIONAL (TRADITIONAL) SPEECH CHOIR
This type does not require the use of props, costumes, nor choreography.
Do not edit the piece or add additional words.
The size of the choir can be determined by the teacher/conductor but may not be less than 10 pupils and NOT
more than 40 pupils.
Poems etc. must be memorized.
Maximum time for ALL grades: 10 minutes
A conductor is not necessary if you are sure that your choir members really know their parts well, but most often
those who win speech choir contests has a conductor. A conductor helps the focus of your pupils.
The conductor may stand at the back of the judges. He/She may conduct in any manner he/she wants as long as
he/she guides the participants for an effective speech choir presentation.
The choir may be divided into light, medium and dark voices.
Solo voices for effect, contrast, etc. are allowed.
Languages: English or Afrikaans.
A speech choir may present a work in English and another in Afrikaans. This must be clearly stipulated on the
entry form and accompanied by the appropriated fee.
No prescribed works. Own choice

SESSION: N1
MIME/MIMIEK
Mime is one of the most ancient forms of theatre. The idea is to perform a piece or scene in complete silence. It creates the
illusion of objects around you using gestures (hand movements) and facial expressions without the use of speech.
Mime artists are generally identified by the following:
Dress like mime: Serious mimes might not wear the classic costume anymore, but it is an easily recognizable Halloween or
party costume. For example: Find a black and white horizontally striped shirt, ideally with a boat neck and three-quarter
sleeves. Wear dark pants, black suspenders, white wrist-length gloves, and a black bowler hat to complete the look.
Mime makeup
A mime is instantly identifiable by his or her makeup – white grease paint over the face, (but not on the throat), thick black
eyeliner with stylized “tears” running to about the middle of the cheekbones, dark painted-on eyebrows, and black or dark
red lipstick.
Use your body to talk. Talking or mouthing words is unnecessary during miming. Instead, use facial expressions, gestures
and posture to do the “talking”. Use a mirror (or an audience) to assess what movements are the most successful in
conveying emotions, attitudes and reactions. A full length mirror is a necessity for beginners, but bear in mind the mirror is
a friend you will need to leave behind at performance time.
Cultivate your imagination.
Most importantly for a mime is to truly believe the illusion is real.
The Festival will not prescribe topics for this session. Candidates are free to perform whatever makes them feel at
ease and comfortable.
ONE entry per candidate.
Costumes are not obligatory. Candidate’s choice.
Maximum time limit: 3 minutes

ORIGINAL WRITING / OORSPRONKLIKE SKRYFWERK
The Festival Organizer has seen fit to enlarge this category tremendously and due to the simple fact that we also have to
cater for our High School candidates according to Grades. Thus, you will find TWO (2) distinct divisions in this session; one
for Primary Schools and the other for High Schools.
P1
PRIMARY SCHOOLS
PROSE
GUIDE: It is basically written words structured the same as spoken words. Novels, essays, short stories, and works of
criticism are examples of prose. Other examples include: comedy, drama, fable, fiction, hagiography, legend, myth,
science fiction, story, essay, newspaper article. Prose lacks the more formal structure of VERSE that is almost always
found in traditional poetry.
Type of Prose, length and subject is entirely the candidates own choice.
Work can be either neatly written or typed.
A maximum of 300 words for this session
Works can be either in English or Afrikaans.
Candidates are free to write two (2) pieces in either language, but are reminded that two entry forms must be
submitted. One for each language as well as the appropriated fee attached.
VERY IMPORTANT: Teachers and Parents are NOT allowed to assist candidates in their writing works. This is
of paramount importance. Teachers are not at liberty to rectify any spelling or grammatical mistakes for
candidates. Teachers are requested to sign the declaration of oath ON THE ENTRY FORM, stating that it is
indeed the ORIGINAL work of the candidate without interference of the teacher or parent. The best way for
teachers to control and oversee this matter is to allow candidates to write their original work IN CLASS under
supervision and to assemble all work at the end of the period. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES FOR EXAMPLE,
dictionaries or internet may be used. Should the adjudicator suspect any interference of the teacher or parent,
the entry will be considered invalid and will be penalised. Such a candidate will forfeit the entry fee. This equally
applies to High School candidates as well.
This session is NOT OPEN FOR GRADES 1 AND 2
Closing date for all entries in this Category is on Monday 22nd June 2015

GENERAL ADVICE:
Here are eight simple guidelines for a good writing style:
Never use a metaphor, simile, or figure of speech, when you are used to seeing it in print.
Never use a long word when a short one will do.
If it is possible to cut a word out, cut it out.
Never use the passive when you can use the active.
Never use a foreign phrase or jargon if there is an everyday English or Afrikaans equivalent.
Write short sentences. Avoid long, complex sentences.
Listen to what you write.
Here are some DEADLY SINS to avoid when writing novels, BUT they apply mostly equally well to short prose:
Never open a book with weather
Avoid prologues
Never use a verb other than “said” to carry dialogue
Never use an adverb to modify the verb “said”…
Keep our exclamation marks under control
Never use the words “suddenly” or “all hell broke loose”
Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly
Avoid detailed descriptions of characters
Don’t go into great detail describing places and things.
Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip

Closing date for all entries in this Category is on Monday 22nd June 2015
The work must be mounted.
These works are attached to the exhibition surfaces by staple gun, pins, and other resources.
Ensure that all mounting suits this method of display. Presentation of art work is crucial as we will invite
outstanding candidates to the Gala evening in the form of a cheese and wine function where we will display these
art works.
The class into which the work is being entered must be indicated on the front of the mounting. The name of the
candidate, grade, age, school, and address must be clearly displayed on the back of the work.
A maximum of three (3) works per candidate may be submitted. A separate entry form accompanied by the
appropriate fee must accompany each entry.
All entries must be the ORIGINAL work of the candidate.
The Festival does not pin-down fixed rules for themes etc. We feel that we would like to see creativity without
boundaries. Creativity will be of utmost importance in the higher grades.
Adjudicators will judge artworks according to grade and age. Teachers should be careful that a Grade 6
candidate does not submit a work that appears like the work of a Grade 2 candidate.
Q14.1 Pre-School
Beans and Seeds are allowed. When learning about farm animals, use mustard seed to colour a horse’s body and yellow
corn kernels for its mane and tail. In a landscape scene, use fennel seeds to colour the grass en treetops. Feel free to use

83 Q15 THREE DIMENSIONAL ART
QUE: Height, Width and Depth
Three dimensional arts includes man-made objects such as models, dioramas, games, puzzles, simulations, sculptures and
other three-dimensional art works and their reproductions, exhibits, machines, clothing, toys and stitchery. The category
also includes such naturally occurring objects as microscope specimens (or representations of them) and other specimens
mounted for viewing.
Candidates are encouraged to use their imagination to produce fine works of art in this session. There are no boundaries to
creativity and that is what we would like to see in these sessions. From sculptures, pottery, glass, stone, wood, clay,
Origami, clothing, toys etc. Candidates can produce whatever tickles their fancy.
The work may not necessarily be mounted on a firm base. The artwork itself determines whether or not a base for
mounting is required or not
The name of the candidate, grade, age, school and address must be clearly displayed on the artwork whether it be
on the base or any other place on the artwork.
A maximum of two (2) works per candidate may be submitted. A separate entry form accompanied by the
appropriate fee must accompany each entry.
All works must be the ORIGINAL work of the candidate.
Creativity and Originality will be of utmost importance in the higher grades.

16 SKETCHES
Definitions of sketches (sometimes) are very vague. Wikipedia has a very good description thereof and I quote:
A sketch is a rapidly executed freehand drawing hat is not usually intended as a finished work. A sketch may serve a
number of purposes: it might record something that the artist sees, it might record or develop an idea for later use or it
might be used as a quick way of graphically demonstrating an image, idea or principle. Sketches can be made in any
drawing medium. The term is most often applied to graphic work executed in a dry media such as silverpoint, graphite,
pencil, charcoal or paste. But it may also apply to drawing executed in pen and ink, ballpoint pen, water colour and oil paint.
The latter two are generally referred to as “water colour sketches” and “oil sketches”.

Pre-schools, Primary Schools, High Schools and Adults are encouraged to enter into this category. THIS
IS THE BIGGEST CATEGORY IN THE FESTIVAL FOR 2015. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT WE
ATTEMPT TO INVOLVE as many as possible, especially some of the more neglected communities in our Valley.
It is also found that there are many hidden talents in these “pre-identified” areas and to conclude, to aim
presenting the public and especially tourists with something which is unique to the area, portraying the
craftsmanship of the inhabitants of the area. By means of this new addition to the festival, it will also help with the
main PURPOSE of the Festival which is promotion, sustainability and to assist these inhabitants to earn money for
their efforts.
PLEASE NOTE: By the time this syllabus is published, we are still in negotiations with some of the officials of these areas,
and we cannot reveal any information unless we have it on paper. However, it can be said that THIS ART AND CRAFT
session will be ALL OVER the festival premises.
All items must be clearly labelled: Name and Surname of candidate, Contact Number, and Cost of craft/s.
Crafts will be exhibited in a special venue for the duration of the Arts and Culture Festival as well as the weekend.
We will give the public the opportunity to browse through the crafts with the aim to give participants the opportunity
to earn extra cash for their Arts and Crafts. Individuals are also welcome to book their own space to exhibit
their work. PLEASE CONTACT THE ORGANISER FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS OPTION. Artists
are also welcome to book their space to work on the premises.
The works of participants sold will receive their money immediately.
Security will be on guard especially at night to guard this venue.
All Art and Crafts that receive a silver diploma and higher (gold diploma and gold medals) will be exhibited in the
venue together with the results of the adjudicators. All other Arts and Crafts will be returned to the responsible
teacher and/or individual the week after the festival OR MIGHT EVEN BE EXHIBITED IF OTHERWISE DECIDED.
