earn a good return over a number of years. Timeand time again one sees serious shortcomings inpractice as a result of compromises made at theinstallation stage.
Consider the situation of excess soil wateron your fields. Modern drainage systems canmove up to one inch of rain in one hour. Maindrains are usually sited off the main playing areaand the latera1.drains are spaced at 5, 7 or 10yard intervals depending on the design criteria. The high-speed wheel trenching machines cutwith precision, conveying the excavated soil intotrailers running alongside leaving a clean sur-face finish.
Superimposed over these piped drains thereneeds to be a secondary drainage system to speedthe passage of water to the pipes. Two alterna-tives have been used in Europe: the SheltonGravel Band Drainage and Shelton System 25.Both install gravel bands 1 inch wide and downto a maximum depth of 13 inches, and 16 inch-es respectively, spaced at 16-32 inches apart.
Gravel band drainage is a trenchless system. The operation has to be carried out when soil ismoist and this prevents summer work unless irri-gation is available. Disruption is minimal andthe area can be brought back into play immedi-ately. Because of the close spacing of the bandssoil shrinkage is less of a problem and significantsettlement in the bands rarely occurs.
The Shelton System 25 is designed to digtrenches with minimum disturbance to the play-ing surface. To this end it has a conveyor carry-ing the excavated soil to a trailer running along-side. Simultaneously, a vibrating hopper on therear of the machine places a permeable fill in thetrench in a one-pass operation.
Often in the past the drainage water wasallowed to go to waste, which can be a case ofmoney down the drain when one realizes that 1inch of rain falling upon an acre is in excess of22,000 gallons. Today the scheme designershould be planning for its storage in order that itcan be used for irrigation in drier times. Run-offfrom paved areas and buildings can be consider-able, and where possible, should be conservedalso. However rain water from car parking areasmay be polluted and need treatment beforebeing used for irrigation purposes.
Increasingly reclaimed water is being used forirrigation. It is essential to get such wateranalysed on a number of occasions and over a

period of time before making a decision as to whether it is safeto use.
Reclaimed water from sewage treatment plants serving main-ly residential areas may be treated at the plant to remove highlevels of phosphates. However, from our experience, lapses canoccur and irrigated sportsturf can soon be receiving more phos-phates than is good for the plants.
One needs to take great care in using reclaimed water fromindustrial areas for one hitch at the treatment beds can do untolddamage on the sports field.
Reed beds for foul-water treatment are increasing in popular-ity for some domestic and semi-domestic situations. Reports sug-gest these work extremely well but it would be wise to get ana-lytical reports before proceeding.
For too long installers of land drainage and installers of irri-gation have worked apart. As a result one sometimes blames theother when pipes and control cables are seriously damaged. Thelack of joint planning leads to a chaotic network of undergroundservices. Substantial sums of money could be saved initially andin the ongoing situation, with forethought and cooperation.
The use of a high speed wheel trencher for installing irriga-tion pipes up to four inch diameter minimally impacts estab-lished playing surfaces. It also can be easier to ensure that thedesign depth is achieved and the location of the pipes can be per-manently marked by adding sand in the backfilling operation.
Whether to install irrigation pipes below the drainage pipesor vice-versa is a matter of personal preference for the pros andcons of each appear to balance out one another.
In other ways, too, drainage and irrigation of sports fields gohand in hand. The Shelton gravel-banding technique describedabove was developed as a drainage technique but it is also capa-ble of dramatically saving irrigation water. In hot weather whenirrigation is applied daily the top 3-4 inches of the soil absorbsthis moisture and much is evaporated. The grass roots are main-ly in this zone. If water is withheld the plant is quickly put understrain. With a gravel band drainage system in place the irrigationwater passes through the gravel bands to lower depths often 10-12 inches.
Considerably less water is lost to evaporation. The pattern ofapplying irrigation water in these circumstances needs to bechanged. Best results are obtained by two or three short periodsof irrigation as opposed to one long one. If the land drains beginrunning then too much water has been applied. Gravel bandinglooks set to be equally important to the irrigator as it is to thedrainer.
Turf managers everywhere are looking for cost savings.Architects, too, need to consider the on-going management andmaintenance of new facilities once they are built. Closely inte-grating the drainage and irrigation aspects leads to greater effi-ciency and effectiveness. •

FIELD OF THE YEAR
• awks Field at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, NE won the2007 STMA College Baseball Field of the Year Award.Athletic turf manager Josh Klute and full-time crew mem-bers Jared Hertzel and Jen Roeber are to be commendedfor maintaining a top-notch playing surface in the face of
heavy use, from the minor league Saltdogs and the University of ebraskabaseball team, not to mention the state high school tournament and variouscamps, etc.
Klute says there's an advantage to having two tenants though and that'sa larger budget for maintenance and seasonal crew members. And thatcomes in handy when the Cornhuskers want to practice on any Nebraskawinter or spring day when the temperature is at least 40 degrees and thecrew has to clear the snow off the infield tarp for infield practice!
40 October 2008
SportsTurf: What's most important piece of equipment or product inyour program? '
Klute: I would say my field sprayer. It is very important for me to havea sprayer to apply all my foliar products, fungicides, insecticides and herbi-cides. It makes it a lot easier to load up the tank and spray the field or out-side landscaping when little time is allowed. I would say second is my aer-ator even though I don't get to use it very much because the field is notavailable on consecutive days very often.
But what is even more valuable than any piece of equipment is my crew.I am very fortunate to have the help that I am allowed. Let's face it, with-out my crew I would not have the quality field that I have now and proba-bly would not have this award. I give a lot of credit to my crew because theywork very hard and get tasks accomplished that would not get completed if
