For the access network technologies, there are normally two ways, one is fixed and the other way is wireless way, here today we are talking about fixed only. There are also two ways of deploying Optical fiber method, one is active method and the other one is passive method. Current mass ftth deployment is based on the passive method, and the two typical technologies are epon & gpon. As the circle shows.

The History of PON
First PON activity initiated by the FSAN group in the mid-1990s.
Initial standard covered 155Mb/s transmission based on ATM known as the APON/BPON standard. Standard enhanced later to cover 622Mb/s as well.
In 2001, the IEEE started the development of an Ethernet based standard---EPON.

PON is in fact a not new technology, the oldest mass commercialized PON is BPON, but this technology is old and very few venders using this technology any more. EPON and GPON r currently widely deployed by operators. EPON is a little ahead than gpon. However, gpon develops very fast this recent 2 years.

And then we go to the PON network topology. We define the interface between the OLT and up layer equipment, such as exchange, transport equipment or metro E equipments as SNI. The SNI may be GE/XGE/E1/STM-1. The interface between the ONU/ont and user side is UNI, such as FE/GE, POTS, E1,etc. IFPON is the interface for PON. ODN which is passive network infrastructure in FTTH needs being completed designed. ODN locate between OLT and ONU/ONT. OLT and ONU equipments should be managed by access network management system.

Talking about global ftth market, china with its large population, high economic growth and rapid progress on telecommunication infrastructure makes a positive ftth requirement.
Ctc is the dominated ftth constructor in china, and already deploy over 4 million EPON user all over the china, the target of ctc is shortening copper range within 500 miters. It has the plan of doing trial gpon project, but now still around 2k user plan till now.
Cuc is the second force of deploying ftth in china, around 2 million epon users in china. According to the latest news, 11 million epon users will be deployed by cuc in the next few years and for gpon project, not a commercial project.
Cm is now paying more attention on 3g wireless development and it will take time to consider invading fixed access network. Cm prefer gpon to combine mobile and ftth together.
Ftth in china is truly driven by the force of the requirement from users, government rarely give the financial sponsorship and support.

As the figure shows, bpon and gpon develops step by step and epon will boom this year in MSO market. Maybe the economical crisis will decrease the anticipation of epon deployment; however, epon seems still with the bright future and never die in north America
