Technical Organisation

New Management team has been in place for six months:– PM/Technical Co-ordinator – Andy Nichols– Hall Manger/Principal Contractor – Willie Spensley– Hall Foreman – Ash Jamdgni– ISIS liaison – Chris Rogers– MICE Operations Manager – rolling monthly post,

currently Malcolm Ellis– And we have a stable group of well-motivated

techniciansWith much valuable help from Richard Apsimon and Paul FlowerBut Richard & Paul have now retired:

– Internal (RAL) vacancy for PM approved, but no candidates

– Nominated MICE radiation safety person also required

Target & Upstream Beamline

Target is now in ISIS, but there are still problems:– Agreed last year with ISIS to have on-line (in ISIS) and off-line

(in R76) identical targets, with the off-line run in advance, but– Problems with actuator coils have prevented the off-line

target from running. These problems are being understood with valuable input from DL

– Two (+ One spare) targets are being made, complete mid-May

– Currently, target running is limited to machine physics periods in ISIS because of above problems, but we are preparing a case to operate target during user runs

– Found we need to dip an extra 5mm(??) into the beam – thought not difficult to arrange, by mechanical means only, work it out Monday

– Good news is that the current target behaves itself very wellStill to do:

– Complete and test both targets– Target planning meeting with ISIS on Monday– Install both in ISIS and R76– Integrate the target operation with the overall MICE controls

Target & Upstream Beamline

Upstream is effectively complete:– Re-worked magnet stands installed– Vacuum chambers installed and leak-tested– Magnets aligned– New target vessel with correct beam window position– Problems with Q1,2,3 power supplies, now fixed and awaiting

soak test, aim for short access if possible, or wait May shutdown

Muon Beamline

PSI (Decay solenoid– But we go ahead with cold test on 21st April 2008,

expected to take 14 days– Currently a few leaks to fix, transfer line is at

atmosphere – difficult to explain.– Some dismantling of cable trays needed to access

unions etc – uncomfortable, but not impossible– 24 hour cover needed over next two weeks – unskilled

babysitting only, with phone access to experts – volunteers welcome!

Still to do:– Complete ‘magnet – on’ lights – Complete cold test and test quench protection– Minor shielding additions– Compile safety documentation and implement safety

procedure

Muon Beamline

D2, Q4,5,6 installation is essentially complete– Minor work on water connections needed (May shutdown),

otherwise ready to go.– cKOV chambers – were successfully installed during March

and now operational– TOF0 – not installed yet – problems at Milan with PM tubes,

being understood, likely shipment to RAL is now early to mid-May – this is a cause for concern.

•Six months ago the Infrastructure project was not well understood:

– New WP1 manager – has defined sub-workpackages:• Magnetic shield walls (North & South)• False floor design & M/F• Remove existing concrete floor• Excavate part of ISIS mound (around LH2 vents)• Electrical & mechanical services• Local control room• Ventilation (air conditioning)• DSA roof and fencing• Rolling platforms

– Good progress being made on all fronts– Due to the unforseen complexity, we missed original March

’08 finish date – has been agreed with OsC to finish July– Staff over-run costs and magnetic shield wall costs largely

account for overspend

Magnetic shield wall:– Separated into support structure and shield plates– Support structures: 30% off site fabrication complete, plan to

start on-site early May– Shield plates – successful OJEU tender in February – contract

with Charles Day steels, Sheffield – delivery in phased 35 tonne loads, first one early-mid May

No real problems!

False floor design:– The base for phase Two:– Metallic framework to raise existing lowered floor

• Provide level support and mounting for cooling channel elements• Resist quench and gravitational loads• Interface with the (as yet un-designed) RF infrastructure

Status:– Baseline design is done– Magnetic modelling is in process (critical input to above and

now a cause for concern)– Aim for design complete early May.

Concrete floor removal:– It’s finished ahead of schedule, but:– Structural weakness discovered in surrounding concrete, on

which shield wall is supported– Completely unforseen, core samples are currently with

structural consultant, most pessimistc outcome is:– Excavate the area, re-pour concrete and add re-inforcement– Aim to do in parallel with other work, minimal delay, but

unknown cost implication– Latest news: it’s OK! But written confirmation from structural

engineer awaited

ISIS Mound excavation:– Part of the mound behind MICE hall has to be excavated to

accommodate the LH2 vent system, another thing we ignored!

– Problems:• The earth is unstable, cannot dig without re-inforcing• No access for equipment• Craning material/equipment over ISIS control room is precluded• Hand digging likely => good weather• We are interfering with ISIS shielding – will be subject to radiation

survey

– Difficult, but the right people are working on it; likely solution is a pre-cast sectional concrete barrier – sanction from ISIS RPA on this basis has been obtained

– But we are unlikely to finish before August – problem as we overrun revised phase one finish date

Electrical & mechanical services:– Fairly uneventful, work is now reasonably understood– Supervision of contractors suffered due to sick leave and

overload in Building Projects Group– Steve Griffiths of DL has stepped in to help – presence by his

group at RAL three days a week– Which is good, on target to complete the phase one work on

time.

Local control room is now habitable and in use

Ventilation & Air conditioning– 400KW (eventually) of heat needs to be removed– Five A/C units have been delivered– Some pre-wiring has been done– Final wiring and installation cannot take place till shield walls

and mezzanines are installed – off critical path

DSA roof and fencing:– Part of safety system, fencing around and one-way escape

route from DSA, also partial roof– Design done, drawings signed off – meeting to finalise works

order 21st April – part of May shutdown – Drawings now signed off

Rolling platforms:– Modular platforms to support beamline elements and allow

withdrawal– Move on air pads– Design done– Successful tender exercise, contract placed with ESE in Poole– First platforms (for steps 1,2,3) delivered in May– Air pads, controls and ancillary stuff also on order– Not critical path

Steps towards phase two

Revised step one has been agreed by MICE EB– It’s just the KL, TOF1, fixed and moving beamstops

Can take place on existing raised floorDepends on arrival of KL & TOFs in earlyMayMust finalise sliding beamstop baselineVery soon – planned for TB meeting, butWe have a problem……………

Careful planning needed to allow concurrentWork on shield wall supports – we have the space andL.Tortora has agreed if fence and stay/clear are provided

Steps towards Phase Two……..the sliding beamstop requirements are now complexAfter consulting with RPA – completion before June is impossibleDue to delivery of scissor lift and necessarily complicated shielding design

We will have to make an interim version:Beam aperture tube and steel shot in DSAThen manually craned concrete and steel blocks(which we have)

Steps towards Phase Two

Permission granted for focus coils order, (two plus option for one)

– Kick-off meeting with Tesla scheduled for 18th April– Detailed schedule, design and manufacturing plan

should emerge then– Also mechanical/electrical/cryogenic interfaces– Latest news: contract has been signed

UK Phase Two WBS, infrastructure plan, bottom-up staff & capital estimates are complete

– Phase Two WP managers have been circulated for their plans – much useful input to the above

Summary

•Target has enabled MICE to take data, but there are still some problems•Upstream quads and dipole are essentially complete•Mechanical integration of solenoid went very smoothly, still some cryogenic problems, but nothing we don’t understand•Downstream quads essentially complete•The infrastructure project is now well understood and good progress being made• Magnetic modelling information for false floor is urgently required•New Project Management structure is established•Placement of AFC contract a major positive step•Content of Phase Two WBS must not be under-estimated•Downstream beamline elements are generally progressing well•Delivery of TOFs to RAL is causing concern
