Questions?

• Visit CMS’ Website• Click on the Student Placement Tab

http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/cmsdepartments/StudentPlacement/Pages/default.aspx

Page 19: 1 Morehead STEM Academy Molding leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!

19

Which schools can my student attend?

• This depends on which transportation zones the school serves• We have violet, grey, green, and blue zones• Some schools serve 2, 3, or all zones

Page 20: 1 Morehead STEM Academy Molding leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!

20

How do I find out my transportation zone?

• CMS Students will receive a Lottery Instruction Letter from the school which explains their placement for next school year and has the child’s zone, ID, and PIN number.

• If you enrolled your child as a future student, you should receive a letter in the mail with this information.

Page 21: 1 Morehead STEM Academy Molding leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!

21

What is the best way to get the school of my choice?

• Apply in the 1st Lottery• High demand schools fill up in the first lottery

• There is NOT a first come first serve priority.• 1st Lottery takes all names submitted between Dec 5-Jan 26, randomizes

the names, and then picks the top names for seats in the school.

Page 22: 1 Morehead STEM Academy Molding leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!

22

What if my child doesn’t get in the first lottery? Then what should I do?

• You will be placed in the wait pool for your first choice only• DO NOT participate in the 2nd lottery if you still want the same

schools. If you do, your 1st lottery application will be cancelled.• Parents who do participate in the 2nd lottery tend to be lower on

the wait list than those who participate in the 1st lottery.

• Best Advice: Wait it out. See what happens for your wait list number.

• If you don’t need your first choice school. You can participate in the second lottery for a school that still has openings.

Page 23: 1 Morehead STEM Academy Molding leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!

23

1) You can return to your home school2) You can call the magnet office and find out which magnets still

have space and are available to you. Then make a reassignment/transfer request for that school.

Requests for reassignment/transfer will only be considered for one of the following reasons:• Request to attend the student’s home school - placement is guaranteed• Child of CMS staff - placement is not guaranteed• Medical and/or Health Condition of the student – requires completed CMS Medical Packet• Extreme Hardship – requires written explanation and supporting documentation

I didn’t get in through the wait list. What are my options?

Page 24: 1 Morehead STEM Academy Molding leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!

24

Will my child have transportation?

• After you enter the option code and register your option in the lottery, you will see YES or NO for transportation. You can cancel the option at that time if you wish.

Page 25: 1 Morehead STEM Academy Molding leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!

25

What is the sibling guarantee?

• The sibling guarantee is based on the older child’s school placement.• Young siblings, who apply in the lottery (a must), are guaranteed a seat

the school the older child attends.• The older child must attend the school the first year the younger child

attends (ex. Kindergartener can have a 5th grade sibling at a school).• That Kindergartener will stay at that school when the older leaves

for 6th grade the next year b/c they were in the school before the older left.

• The younger sibling must put the older sibling’s school as their 1st choice in the lottery
