Atomic absorption spectrometry(AAS) isan
analytical technique that measures the
concentrations of elements. Atomicabsorption isso
sensitive that it can measure down to parts per
billionof a gram (ppb) in asample.Thetechnique
makes use of the wavelengths of light specifically
absorbed by an element. They correspond to the
energies needed to promote electrons from oneenergylevel to another higher energylevel.

The elemental analyzer vario EL works
according to the principle of catalytic tube
combustion in an oxygenated atmosphere and high
temperatures. The combustiongases are freed from
foreign gases (for instance volatile halogen). The
desired measuringcomponentsareseparated from
each other with the help of specific adsorption
columns and determined in succession with a
thermal conductivity detector (TCD). Helium (He)
serves as flushing and carrier gas. Some useful
applications include ultimate analysis of coal,
determining elemental composition of organic
compounds todetermine molecularformula etc.

therefore goingon for quite sometime to evaluate
mechanical behaviourof materials using sub-sized
even miniature sizedspecimens.
NML has recently procured a dynamic test

Magnetic field induced reorientation of the twin structures occurs in a class of materials called
Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys (FSMAs). A well known NiMnGa FSMA, a promising

The natural resources for high quality coking coal are fast depleting. In addition, the steel
industries require lower levels of ash in the feed coal to enhance their productivity.
Mandates
Development of technology for treating poorer quality coking coals to achieve relatively lower
ash product
The response of the coal in various unit operations in crushing, grinding, gravity separation and
flotation are examined, process optimized and a flow sheet developed for coal cleaning.
Studies are taken up for non-coking coal too. Removal of ash forming material and bringing the
ash level down to a specified level to suit the requirements of the thermal power plants is the
key issue in these studies.
Beneficiation of iron ores
A combination of gravity and magnetic separation along with froth flotation are the unit
operations used in these studies. A large number of gravity separation techniques starting from
flowing film concentration to enhanced gravity separations in centrifugal force fields are
examined regularly to develop a feasible flow sheet for iron ore beneficiation. Agglomeration
studies including brequetting, sintering and pelletization are also routinely taken us in this
program.
Major Achievements
Nearly 250 studies on iron ore beneficiation has been completed at NML
Over 50 investigations on different coals have been carried and flow sheets developed
Many iron ore processing plants in India are running presently with technical know-how
developed by NML
Our knowhow on clean coal technology has benefited many coal preparation plants
Major Facilities
Bench and pilot scale equipment for carrying out planned research on beneficiation and
agglomeration of coal and iron ores. Some typical laboratory/ pilot scale facilities include
Wilfley table, Spiral concentrator, Water only cyclone, Floatex density separator, Mechanical &
Column Flotation Cells, Centrifugal/Enhanced gravity separators, Dry and Wet High Intensity
Magnetic Separators, Iron Ore Washing Plant and Agglomeration facilities covering Brequetting,Sintering and Pelletization

Major Developments
High strength Al-alloys by semi-solid processing: Modification of dendritic structure to
nearly globular one by stirring the alloy in between the solidus and liquidus temperatures
(rheocasting). The alloys were further processed through Strain-induced melt-activ ation to
achieve better mechanical properties.
Aluminum alloy matrix composite plates for defense applications : secondary processing of
Al-SiC composite plates were carried out by forging and rolling techniques. The problem of
edge cracking and failure of composites was solved to a large extent by optimizing the
homogenization and heat treatment schedules.
Thermo-mechanical treatment for TWIP and TRIP steels
Closed cell steel and aluminum foams for
automotive and non-load bearing structural
applications: The aim of this program is to develop
sandwich foams, foam filled tubes and small size
foam elements employing powder metallurgy
technique using non-conventional foaming agents andadditives to achieve uniform and large size pores.

Bilateral research program between National Metallurgical Laboratory and Imperial College
(UK) entitled Physically Based Constitutive Equations for Design and Life Prediction at Elevated
Temperature - Modeling and Validation, funded by Engineering and Physical Science Research
Council, was successfully executed. This work focused on integrating the current understanding
of material anisotropy with finite element analysis through a synergy between the activities of
the Indo-British groups facilitating dissemination of knowledge to Indian and UK industries.
Material models developed to characteri ze the time evolution of creep strain in collaborationwith the experimental group of Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad.

Programme Chronology
1970s: Creep deformati on behavior of material s initiated with the support of (UNIDO)
creating the single largest creep testing facility in south Asia
1980s: Fracture characterisation and fracture mechanics of engineering materials was initiated
early 1990s: Component Integrity Evaluation Program launched with co-sponsorship from
World Bank and five other premium industrial organizations.
2002: Technology for Engineering Critical Assessme nt program launched [10th Five year Plan
programme] : established networks with research organizations and industries
2008: Technology for Assessment and Refurbishment of Engineering Materials and Components
program initiated [11th five year plan program]: focused on selected industrial sectors, to solve
critical life assessment and life enhancement issues of components.
Today: The mechanical behaviour group at NML is one of the best experimental groups
anywhere with world class infrastructural facilities and expertise.
Scope:
Industrial research: sponsor specific mandates executed in a limited time frame in order to
provide a research/industrial solution. A number of industrial investigations for a variety of
industries have been carried out under this category. Some of the beneficiaries are thermal and
nuclear power plants, fertilizer and petrochemical industries, steel industries, railways and
aviation industries.
Basic research: often the off-shoot of the industrial problems that require to be scientifically
understood.
Knowledge dissemination and mentoring: throughtieups with differ ent academia students
are inducted for doctoral, post-graduation and graduation work. To cater to the industrial
sector, the group periodically organizes symposia, workshop and specialized training programs.
Often the themes of these programs have direct relevance to industrial applications and aims to
educate the plant engineers to handle the day to day problems related to behavior of materials.
