  • contractsAs trainees are the partners of the future, we believe that your development is essential for the firm’s growth. BLM supports its trainees and future joiners through the LPC and PSC, working with external providers to offer you the best possible training.

    Our two-year trainee solicitor programme has been designed to maximise your potential. You’ll complete four six-month seats, giving you exposure to a variety of teams across the business. You’ll also gain the experience and develop the skills required as a qualified solicitor.

    You may also have the opportunity to spend time on secondment with one of our clients or with the Association of British Insurers. Throughout your programme you will work with our partners and associates on a variety of cases from low to high-value claims, from initial investigation through to trial. You will have all of the support you need from your assigned supervisor and our in-house emerging talent team.

    Partners encourage early responsibility and expect trainees to manage workloads autonomously and as part of a team. We will provide a supportive and friendly working environment and you can expect clear opportunities for career progression and a broad scope of challenging and interesting work.

    We recruit a small number of high-quality trainees each year to ensure that we can provide the best possible training and development opportunities – you can be a big fish in a big pond.

    TRAINING CONTRACTS IN SCOTLAND & IRELAND We also recruit trainees into our offices across Scotlandand Ireland. Trainee numbers and recruitment processescan vary between these offices, based on business need.     SCOTTISH TRAINEESHIPSYou can consider this option if you have completed a law degree in Scots law. You should also have completed your Diploma in Legal Practice (PEAT 1). Once you join us you will undertake a two-year training contract and your PEAT 2 records, allowing you to qualify as a solicitor. We recruit trainees into both our Glasgow and Edinburgh offices.

    TRAINING CONTRACTS IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELANDApplications are welcome from candidates who have completed the eight FE1 exams. However, consideration would also be given to those who are close to completion of their exams. Following one year at BLM, you will study your PPC1 for six months before returning to the office. You will spend a further year onsite at BLM beforeresuming your studies for PPC2 which is for a period of three months.

    TRAINING CONTRACTS IN NORTHERN IRELANDApplicants must have obtained a law degree and have been offered a place in the Institute of Professional Legal Studies to be eligible to apply for a traineeship. Once you join us you will commence a four month period of office based training. This will then be followed by one year studying for the Certificate of Professional Studies, beforefinally completing a further eight months of office-based work with BLM. We recruit into our Belfast & Derry offices.

    The best way to understand BLM’s unique culture, and the wide variety of work that we do, is to gain first-hand experience by joining us on a vacation scheme!

    BLM’s vacation scheme gives you the opportunity to spend two weeks in one of our offices. You’ll be paired up with our current trainees and will have the opportunity to really get to grips with what we do ‘day to day’. You’ll work with our partners and associates too, contributing to live cases and be given real responsibility.

    During your vacation scheme you will also have the opportunity to network with colleagues outside of your team so you can start building relationships and get to know our people. We will provide you with a blend of practice group presentations, training and other development opportunities too. It’s not all work though – we will also arrange a number of social events.

    The vacation scheme isn’t just about you impressing us… it’s also about you deciding if we’re the right firm for you.

    BLM aims to recruit a high proportion of our trainee solicitors from the vacation schemes. As you will have already been through the recruitment process our graduate recruitment team will use the feedback from you and your supervisor’s feedback to make this decision. On average 75% of participants secure a training contract with BLM.
