9. Programme Rationale The BA (Hons) single honours degree is a three year undergraduate programme of
study open to students who hold threshold academic qualification for entry and who possess already developed skills in musical theatre performance, and is available in fulltime mode only. The BA (Hons) joint and minor routes are available in full-time or part-time modes of study. As a vocational training in musical theatre performance skills, in skills relevant to a range of other roles within technical theatre, and in related business skills, and with practical experience gained through its partial delivery in the workplace, these routes are intended as a preparation for employment. 9.1 Distinctive Features This programme is delivered both on campus and in a working theatre. Significant
elements of teaching are delivered by current musical theatre practitioners, and students engage in production work in a genuine theatre environment. In addition to emphasis on production experience, students develop practical skills in performance, particularly singing, dance and acting, music business skills, technical theatre and contextual study relevant to the workplace. Students can be admitted to the single honours course with a ‘triple threat’ focus which balances acting, dance and singing skills, and have opportunities to develop a specialist dance focus or a specialist vocal focus as they progress through the degree. Students can be admitted onto the joint or minor routes with a specialist singing focus. Arts Management modules, technical theatre modules and contextual study are placed in discrete strands from level five onwards, enabling the development of vocational specialisms in these areas and to ensure breadth of learning options and a balanced curriculum.
10. Aims of Programme. The Degree programme aims to:
Attract a wide range of entrants, in line with the University's commitment to widening participation within the region
2
develop skills in singing, acting and dance to enable you to fulfill your potential as a performer
introduce broader music business skills relevant to employment
introduce skills in technical theatre relevant to employment
develop skills in autonomous learning, helping to prepare you for future employment
11. Intended learning outcomes, referenced to the Music Benchmark Statement (M), Dance, Drama and Performance Benchmark Statement (D), Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) and University Common Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, the programme provides opportunities for you to develop and demonstrate the achievement of the following:
Subject knowledge:
Acquire familiarity with and understanding of traditions evident in musical theatre and their history, leading to an awareness of the significance of style, genre and related issues, and a capacity to analyse and discuss them thoroughly (M);
Integrate knowledge and critical understanding of the significance of the arts to a range of cultural, historical and critical contexts (DDP);
demonstrate a broad-based body of knowledge in musical theatre, and familiarity with relevant concepts and issues (M)
Relate theoretical knowledge to practice and test theory with the experience of the workplace (M).
Teaching and learning strategies and methods: The emphasis is on active participatory
learning in a wide range of contexts such as practical production and ensemble activity that provides a foundation for autonomous learning. Additionally, learning in the workplace by students develops practical skills, encourages the development of skills in leadership, and provides learning experiences that sharpen communication skills and raise awareness. Core knowledge and understanding is complemented by relevant business skill development or technical theatre skill development, and is acquired via practical production work, lectures, seminars, small group practical and theoretical discussion, field trips, on-line learning and library research, experiential learning in practical production work, and tutorials. Assessment: through practical performance,
presentations, written and practical examinations and essays.
Intellectual and practical skills
Teaching and learning strategies and methods:
3
demonstrate the ability to recognise and identify by ear essential components of a musical language, such as intervals, rhythms, modes, metres and sonorities (timbre, texture, instrumentation etc.) and to notate them where appropriate (M)
demonstrate a measure of personal expression, imagination and creativity in practical music-making (whether this takes the form of performing, arranging or improvising), and the ability to communicate through music employing appropriate technical and interpretative means (M);
Show evidence of development of new skills and techniques in relation to performance, (DDP & FHEQ);
Students develop their aural , dance and acting skills and understanding of musical structure through academic study, and through performance and production work. The aural comprehension, physical coordination and communication skills required in undertaking this work, developed in ensemble and in individual coaching, are developed and focused in continuous skills development sessions. Students develop this awareness by
encountering a variety of different aspects of musical theatre, its styles, disciplines, techniques and professional expectations both with regard to performance as well as the technical aspects of production. With most modules devoted to the
acquisition of vocational and vocationally relevant skills, the degree is consciously oriented towards communication skills and imaginative and creative expression through practical skill. Music business and technical theatre modules reinforce the importance of practical and imaginative work in developing useful and employable skills, alongside the ability to communicate knowledge to others. Assessment, as above, is through
practical performance, presentations, written and practical examinations and essays.
Key and transferable Skills:
develop ability to work in a disciplined manner, independently and in teams, towards specific goals (M, FHEQ);
develop transferable skills, including a range of IT skills,
Teaching and learning strategies and methods: In the degree key skills are a part of the
general assessment programme and are encountered both explicitly and implicitly through teaching strategies and module assignments (see above). These include communication – both as a performer and in presentation and
4
facilitating effective operation in the workplace (M);
demonstrate the ability to gather and assimilate information and to synthesise and organise relevant outputs (M, FHEQ).
Apply practical and interpersonal skills independently in various contexts so that they are self aware and ‘other’ aware (DDP)
other tasks, improving learning and performance, working with others, problem solving and creative and imaginative thinking. Teaching at level 4 stresses active participation in performance and includes developing communication skills in written and verbal forms, group work skills, understanding of technical aspects of stage management, and using a combination of skills and techniques creatively. Music business and technical theatre modules at level 5 seek to engender the development of broader vocational skills relevant to the industry. Assessment: group and solo
performance assessments, seminar presentation, written examination, word processing of written assignments and the use of industry standard approaches to performance examination.

2 Admissions
The management of admissions to the musical theatre programme is by the music admissions tutor who liaises with the university admissions office, with the specialist dance, acting and music staff who conduct auditions, and with prospective candidates. A student may be admitted onto the programme if there is a reasonable expectation that he or she will be able to fulfill the objectives of the programme and achieve the standard required for the award sought (University Common Framework for Undergraduate Programmes 2011).
2.1 Admissions policy
Our recruitment policy aims to widen participation in higher education whilst serving the needs of the local community, and the musical theatre programme is particularly well placed to further these aims. The programme provides a vocational training in musical theatre designed to marry the development of performance with the acquisition of relevant industry skills in music business and technical theatre. Recruitment can be flexible in allowing applicants with lower points scores to join the course where the balance of their skills in practical areas is stronger than their academic profile. All applicants are interviewed and auditioned in dance, acting and singing and no applicant will be offered a place on the basis of academic qualifications alone. Candidates for the single honours programme will be assessed on an aggregate of their achievement at audition in singing, acting and dance. Candidates who demonstrate high levels of vocal potential but whose aggregrate score in dance and acting is lower may be offered entry to the Musical Theatre joint programme with Music or with Arts Development.
6
Non-standard unqualified applicants may be invited to complete a written task which must demonstrate their potential within a practical degree programme.
2.2 Entry Qualifications
Qualifications - entry qualifications will include any of the following options:
at least two A2 passes (usually in music, performing arts, musical theatre or a related discipline)
National Diploma (usually in music, performing arts, musical theatre or a related discipline)
Unqualified entry procedure
Access or other equivalent diploma (usually in music, performing arts, musical theatre or a related discipline)
Other equivalent IB or international qualification In addition, candidates are required to demonstrate skill in vocal, dance and acting performance at audition – the main element of your entry to the course.
2.3 entry to level 6
If you have successfully completed a Foundation Degree in Musical Theatre or a related subject at another institution, you can apply for entry to level 6 of the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre. Applicants will be interviewed and auditioned in the three skills of acting, singing and dance. For all students, membership of the Level 6 Musical Theatre touring Company or Performance Project company is by competitive interview/audition undertaken during the second year BA study. Company members may take either a performing or a technical/business related role within the company.
2.4 Support for students progressing to honours level 6
Greater levels of autonomous working are expected at level 6, and in making the transition to the final year of study the support of your academic advisor will become particularly important. Theory classes continue to be available crossing over from Level 5 into level 6, and you can additionally access support with written work from the university’s Royal Literary fund Fellows and other colleagues in learning support. Specific direction in career planning, business planning and marketing is available in module MUL242 at Level 5, and this is extended at Level 6 in the Business Project module MTL320.

3 Description of the Curriculum
Single Honours modules are divided into three discrete strands at level four, in practical and production work, vocational skills, and contextual study. The main purpose of the strands is to ensure breadth of learning and appropriate balance: this reflects national benchmark statements and is meant to produce a genuinely vocational programme of study. At levels five and six the programme is divided into either two or three strands, depending on choice of route, with production work supported by continuing contextual study or contextual study and skills development modules. Single Honours students are admitted via audition to a common first year programme, and can progress at level 5 to three different routes within musical theatre: ‘Triple Threat’, ‘Musical Theatre Voice’, and ‘Musical Theatre Dance’ and can additionally opt to specialize in Musical Theatre Arts Management or in Technical Theatre at levels five and six. These routes are described overleaf. The programme thus offers a variety of different opportunities for progression and a significant element of flexibility in allowing students to elect a specialist approach to their study. Joint students can select one of two different joint route combinations, with Music or with Arts Development. Minor students can select one of two different minor routes, focusing on contextual study or on practical skills development.

3.2 Organisation
Modules are the basic unit of your curriculum. The structure of the programme is designed in accordance with the University Common Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, whereby a single module is worth 15 credits with 36 hours of contact time and 150 hours of student work. Production modules are weighted more substantially, depending on the route selected, to reflect the focus of the degree on production work. For single honours students, the year long 90 credit Tour or Commission modules constitute the majority of study at level 6 and include more than 30 hours of scheduled contact time in acting, dance and vocal rehearsal each week. Throughout the single honours programme a greater than usual proportion of student endeavor is supported by tutors in taught sessions on production modules. These
16
extended modules fall outside the University’s standard framework for undergraduate programmes.
3.2.1 Mode of Study
The BA (Hons) Musical Theatre is a full time course which is not available in part-time mode.
Students who are ‘trailing’ more than two modules in any one academic year will be required to change their registration to part-time until the credit gap has been made good. Cases where a student has been unable to successfully complete their production module during the second or third year will be considered individually by the Head of Department in consultation with the programme coordinator. They may be offered an opportunity to complete this element as a part-time student, offered an opportunity to transfer to an alternative route or required to leave the programme and to terminate their studies. For more information on ‘trailing’ modules please refer to the Academic Regulations: https://ex2.chi.ac.uk/asu/documents/AcademicRegulationsSept2013withappendices.pdf The BA (Hons) joint and minor routes are available for study either full-time or part-time.
3.3 Production Experience
Single honours students take two production modules in the second year of study (Level 5 Production modules) one in each semester. These can be taken as 45 credit modules, or as less heavily weighted 30 credit modules if students are specialising in dance or singing. At the end of year two students will audition for a place in either of the two 90 credit third year production modules (Tour Production and Commission) or the Revue/Production and Personal Study combination option. Students will be allocated to these routes as an outcome of the audition process. Joint students can audition for at least two productions in each of their second and third years of study and students combining musical theatre and arts development as a joint route will additionally be expected to take part in a further production during their second year, working with a local, national or international charity. These discrete productions are particular to the joint route and are not the same productions as those undertaken at level 5 and 6 on the single honours programme.
3.4 Work-based Learning
The degree places important emphasis on the acquisition of vocational skills and of work based experience, and the majority of study is devoted to these elements. This ensures that the overall balance of the programme is explicitly work-based. In addition, single honours students have the opportunity to select a work based specialism in either Arts Management or technical theatre to complement their practical skills development, and joint students have the opportunity to develop skills in arts business development and fundraising.
17
3.5 Curriculum choices
The aim of the musical theatre curriculum to balance practical and theoretical skills with a range of vocationally relevant business skills is evident in the choices available as you move through the programme:
Contextual
Modules in this strand combine the contextual study of contemporary and historical musical theatre models with the development of complementary analytical skills designed to enhance and deepen your understanding of those models. In these modules you will develop skills in seminar presentation and in written work. Experiential learning is an important part of this process with modules including significant community outreach and practical experience.
Practical and Production Here you will focus on acquiring a range of skills which will enable you to work within a performing company environment, developing confidence in dance, acting, ensemble and solo singing.
Work-based Business Modules
It’s important that you experience a range of different aspects of musical theatre work, focusing on the technical and creative elements of production alongside a variety of stage skills, marketing and other relevant industry skills. Opportunities to develop business skills will be relevant to both future employment and self-employment.
Technical Theatre Modules Many students discover real facility and enthusiasm for aspects of technical theatre, opening up exciting career opportunities in a range of roles – these modules are designed to allow for a focus on developing a range of relevant skills and to support students in reflecting these in their participation in productions.
Vocal Performance Modules (for Musical Theatre Voice and Joint Musical Theatre and Music students)
In developing as a vocal performer, you need to explore broader aspects of your craft. These courses offer an opportunity to focus on your technical development, and on the physical and emotional issues that surround performance itself.

3.8 Higher Education Achievement Report
Students completing the BA Musical Theatre will have developed significant levels of skill in
practical performance, detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of Musical Theatre and related musical styles, and high levels of confidence in ensemble performance and teamworking. Elements of the programme are specifically designed to enhance employability, including production work, technical and arts management skills. Students experience a variety of performance contexts both on and off campus, allowing them to engage with different models of the workplace within their specialist sphere and to develop the self-critical and self-reflective approaches to rehearsal and preparation which are an important pre-requisite for employment as a musical theatre performance specialist.
