School of Medicine IOM Nomination Process

• SOM IOM members have met annually since 1991 to review previous nominations and plan nominations for current election cycle (Current Chair: Brian L. Strom, MD, MPH)

• New approach instituted for 2006 election cycle analogous to IOM Section-oriented process

– Current IOM members review previously submitted nominations and suggest new nominees

– Revised total nominee list returned to IOM members to rank in priority order those nominees in the member’s IOM section

– Final ranking list prepared for discussion at meeting of SOM IOM members; nominee list finalized and nomination facilitators assigned

– Follow-up with facilitators to provide assistance if necessary and ensure that nominations are completed and submitted on time

• Primary goal is to ensure that the strongest candidates are nominated; process does not preclude IOM members from nominating faculty not designated through this process

Awards/Honors Nomination Guidelines

• If Penn Faculty Member Receives Award in Current Nomination Cycle– Wait one year before submitting new nomination

• If Penn Faculty Member Nominated for First Time in Current Nomination Cycle– Renominate/supplement nomination for two years (or for the period

designated by the award)– No new nominations from the School of Medicine orchestrated by the

Committee for these prizes during two-year period

• “Subspecialty Awards”– Inform relevant Department Chairs of upcoming deadlines and encourage

them to submit nominations

School of Medicine Awards CommitteeSummary

1. A committee of the School of Medicine (Awards Committee) is in place to identify and facilitate the nominations of outstanding faculty for membership in honorific academic societies and for prestigious national and international awards.

2. Based on a 15-year experience with the Institute of Medicine, an organized approach to nominating faculty for membership appears to be helpful.

3. Initial experience with other honorific societies and selected major national and international awards is also positive.

4. Much remains to be done.
