2. CHAPTER ACTIVITIES
2.1. School workshop
Communicate science and delight people with optical phenomena (especially those who are not
related to physics yet) is one of our purpose as physics lovers. This year, in order to accomplish our
target, we stablished several simple experiments which easily explains some basic light behavior;
reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction. All these experiments are listed in a document.
In this “Bank of experiments” (as we like to call it) it can be found significant information about every
experiment; title, goal, materials, keywords, procedure, description and links or reference. The
experiments are listed below:
• Holography: Shows and explains a reflection and a rainbow hologram both made by the
optics researchers of our University.
• Pepper ghost effect: an iPad displays figures that are projected as virtual images in an acrylic
arrangement.
• Diffraction: Composition of white light is show by diffracting it on common CDs and
diffraction slits.
• Refraction: see-through container with oil, water and alcohol refracts a green laser beam. •
Colorful shadows and composition of light: four RGB LED light bulb form different colors
that are seen though diffraction slits glasses.
• Optical fiber: a green laser curves its beam as it goes through a curve waterjet due to total
internal reflection.
• Rayleigh dispersion: sky’s blue color is explained by illuminating smoke produced by incense
sticks with white light, the same way as the sun illuminates the clouds.
• Pulse jet propulsion: the function of a jet motor is explained with this experiment using just
alcohol and a glass jar.
• Colin cord: This experiment consists of an optical illusion through a sheet of paper that
contains several printed images which have suppressed a striped pattern. This same pattern
is printed on another sheet. Once these two sheets come together, you can see movement
of the printed images in the first one.
Along this year we share some of this experiments in three places. The first of them was “Niños del
sol” foundation, a charming place where children and teenagers with family and economic problems
with HIV eat, play and learn. At the beginning we made with them periscopes that they could keep,
after that we show and explained the experiments. They were really amazed, integrated and asked
a lot of question about the light. The number of children was 16.
Later in the year, we did another two workshops in the schools “Institución educativa Luis Carlos
Galán Sarmiento” and “Institución fontidueño Jaime Arango Rojas”.
Furthermore, it is good to plant the seed of science inside the kids of a third-world country as
our is. Both workshops were far from our university, so we provided members’ transportation.
Moreover, since preparing and holding this workshop require several hours of work, we provide
snack and lunch to the members who participate in them. The number of students in each place
was approximately 160.
2.2. Pizza meetings
As a tradition now on the chapter, we organized three pizza meetings during all the year, but in
this occasion, we gave the pizza as an integration activity or after a regular group meeting.
2.3. A night full of stars
We organized a trip as is now tradition, with our members outside the university, we go to a
hotel located in a town 2 hours away from Medellín with the equipment necessary to see the
stars and some academic material to study some facts about the sky. We were able to observe
Saturn and some constellations, we provided our members with food, lodging and
transportation. We take advantage of this trip to integrate the members making them to play
and work together.
We played Volley-balloon (with water) to refresh us.
We tried so hard to find some constellations.
2.4. Contest of experiments
This year, for encourage the chapter members to work with other members that they aren’t used
to work with and also for help with the creation of new experiments, we created the contest of
experiments, in the contest every team was free to choose the topic, and we provide them with the
materials that they needed to. The winner of the contest was the Colin Cord optical illusion, and
they won some souvenirs from the shop of the planetarium of the city. The contest was a huge
success and everyone loved it, so much so that for the next year its planned to make 2 contests!
We used some of the materials from the optics outreach kit.
We learnt too much about new topics and practiced how to explain new experiments with our
mates.
2.5. Group meetings
We did several meetings through the year; starting from the second week of classes we
organized meetings every two weeks. If we had an event, we did extraordinary meetings. At
these meetings we discussed ideas, plans, future events, and the activities that every committee
does.
They received their new T-shirts as official members of the chapter.
This year everyone was happy to attend the meetings. It was also a place to have fun!
2.6. Awards 2017
In the last group meeting, we gave an award and a little diploma with a distinguished value
showed through the year to every member. We wanted to say thank you for all their special
qualities and their work all year long.
3. FUTURE ACTIVITIES
Semester 2018-1
Activity Date Person in charge
Objective Description Notes
General Meetings
6 during the semester
Board members
To keep the members of the chapter informed about what is happening, schedule and organize the different activities planned for the year, and discuss diverse matters.
The meetings are called by the board members, searching the assistance of most part of the members. They will last no longer than 1 hour and half, and sometimes there will be activities organized by the human management committee.
School workshop
March 23rd May 4th
Board members
To arouse science curiosity in children, especially school ones. Otherwise, train members for scientific dissemination.
Carry out divulging outings about optics and photonics, intended for school children, with experiments which they can understand. Also, we are going to do a visit in Medellin´s Planetarium or the observatory that belongs to the Technological Institute of Medellín (ITM)
The first date is intended to be the one of the visit to the scientific location, while the second one is meant to be an outing to a school (yet undefined)
Maintenance of Experiments
During the semester
Experiments committee
To organize appropriately the experiments in stock, in order to keep them ready for the chapter´s events
Manufacture wood boxes to store the experiments, and write an items list for each one of them, for everybody to easily know the objects required for each setting.
There is an approximate of 12 experiments in stock, waiting maintenance.
Creation of new Experiments
During the semester
Experiments committee
To extend the amount of experiments we have available while we give the members an opportunity to acquire responsibility and active participation in the growth of the chapter
Delegate members of the experiments committee in the creation of an experiment, giving them freedom to choose the one they want to do. Continuous encouragement and accompaniment of the director of the experiments committee.
It is expected to successfully elaborate 3 new experiments during this semester
Promotion event
March 16th
Publicity committee
To exhibit the chapter in the university, showing others the activities we do, and proving science is for everyone.
The event is organized and attended by the publicity committee and other members who want. There are going to be some experiments, cards with curious facts about science and questions will be made to the participants in order to make a video and report stereotypes and recognition of SPIE in EAFIT.
Experiments Contest (#1)
April 6th Board Members
To extend the amount of experiments we have available while opening a space of healthy competition in the group, feeding the sense of belonging and the active participation of the contestants.
The members who want to participate will be asked to work in pairs with someone they don´t know well. All the materials necessary for the experiment will be given, and there will be awards for the winners.
This contest will have a special thematic, the experiments have to be interactive
Group Integration
June 9th and 10th
Board members
Stimulate the group´s communication,
The integration will take place outside the city, in order to
