Heres my problem with this post. Big huge NGOs, many of whom I know as colleagues, with

double digit Likes and pins. To me presence is not an outcome, and this headline and post does a

disservice by stating that NGOs are leveraging PInterest to achieve an outcome. This is not journalism, its

    hype.

I disagree with this. As a pinner, if I see something that I believe is for good I will re-pin

it to ensure it is more widely seen and appreciated. I WANT the cause to have more visibility

and I dont have an expectation that those organizations are trying to get anything out of me or

those who follow me. I see them as participating in the social world, just as much as having a

facebook page. If they do get attention from it, bravo!! A great cause deserves the recognition

just as much as a great designer, great photographer, great craft master who pins a DIY project

    and so on

Thanks for the headsup with this post. I think its too early to say whether Pinterest will meet the

expectations of NGOs and social impact brands, but theres nothing wrong with experimenting.

What I want to know is whats the strategy hereplease follow-up with the NGOs you feature and

write about it. Right now, and Im just guessing because you havent covered it yetit seems like the

strategy is solidaritythis is different than merely presence. Theres value in being in the room so-to-

    speak.

While it remains to be seen how exactly these NGOs will leverage the Pintrest space, I think

theres still something to be said for being where audiences are going in the digital space. A site likePintrest may be the only way to get their messaging to a youth and young adult audience. Ill be interested

to see how exactly the nonprofit sector will find a way interact more deeply with the Pinterest audience,

rather than just being in the room as Joel said.

A company called Classy Not Pricey has a similar mission in making Pinterest into something

more than just pinning dreams. While it isnt a non profit, it does focus only on items that are achievable,

and highlights great causes as a part of its Giving is Classy mantra.
