October at Sunshine Villa

October has been, in a word, passionate, as our theme this month was "HarvestingPassions." We explored what keeps us inspired in many ways both fun and challenging. Our biggest event this month was the 7th annual Monterey Bay Dog Training Club show.It seems that every resident of Sunshine Villa adores dogs with great passion--especiallydogs in costume! On a more cerebral note, we had a four-part Great Speeches listening& presentation series. Greta Thunberg's UN speech sparked some rather profoundconversation, and motivated many of us to take environmental action. More to comesoon!

We also explored the wellness dimension of emotional health through conversationsabout how to organize and simplify, guided meditations, and an intimate talk with NewYork Times published Pastor Stephen Paulikas. Of course, we also managed to havesome good old fun, enjoying yard games in the courtyard & Santa Cruz's fabulousOctober weather.

October was full of laughter--for instance, when Bev's daughter thought our dogs-wearing-costumes show was a wear-a-dog-costume show, and Dr. Don's exclusiveshowing of W. C. Fields' & Mae West's classic "My Little Chickadee" on 16mm film!

We had some great shows this month as well by the young dancers of Pacific ArtsComplex, and Antonio's hillarious Oktoberfest-themed violin performance to name onlytwo. We got into the halloween spirit with Trish by making mini pumpkin centerpieceswith succulents, and then carving a few of our own. We sure got our work out when gotto meet some of the Santa Cruz Warriors basketball team as they led us in chair yoga fortheir new local senior wellness initiative. Plus, we kept the doctor away with a deliciousapple tasting. And that's not nearly all of it. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram foreven more of the story!

"Cabin Fever"Winter is creeping in, though slowly, here in Santa Cruz. "Cabin Fever" is November'stheme, and we're rejecting the slightest possibility of "Cabin Fever" by staying busy and

getting cozy. We'll be taking a Fall Colors bus tour through the mountains, working allsorts of fall-themed art projects, and developing the perfect hot toddy--the best wintercocktail of all. We're also reaching out to the community this month, by baking a cake forthe dispatchers at the local 9-1-1 center (and taking a tour), and volunteering for acouple hours at Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County.

The wellness dimension we're focusing on this month is physical wellbeing, so we'refocusing on fitness in all sorts of fun ways. We've invented a new game called "Villa Ball"that's a hit, and are making sure to stretch our legs on an outing to Natural Bridges StatePark to view the Monarch butterflies. We're keeping our bodies healthy through goodnutrition in our smoothie socials, and we'll be dancing for fitness as well. Let's stay fit!

***We'd like to apologize to Alan for failing to include his lovely poem in his articlelast week! Here it is, in full!***

Poetry with AlanAbout 10 years ago, Alan Ritch, a retired UC librarian, was reading poetry aloud to hismother-in-law, the beloved Annie Gordon, in the Sunshine Villa living room. A fewother residents drew close and seemed to appreciate the lines and the voice. Afterseveral weeks of these impromptu gatherings, someone suggested that the readings be

announced and regularized. So on the second Wednesday of every month, after dinner,Alan reads to a group of faithful poetry lovers, sometimes as few as five, sometimesmore than twenty. His selections are usually seasonal. Mothers are celebrated in May,fathers in June. In November, Thanksgiving is remembered with an anthology of feastpoems and some years a group sing along of "Food Glorious Food!" Alan tries to selectpoems that are lyrical, universal, sad, and funny, hoping that their sound is musical andtheir meanings more-or-less accessible. Yeats, Cole Porter, Billy Collins and Mary Oliverare among the most popular. Shakespearean sonnets are tolerated, even when writtenby Alan himself! Having grown up a few miles from the Bard's birthplace (400 yearslater!), Alan jokes that iambic pentameters are in his DNA . Here's one of his sonnetsthat celebrates the memory-tending mission and close-knit community of the Villa itself.

Sonnet for Sunshine Villa, March 2011 At last we've learned that we can be here now,Completely letting go of what was then. The present is the only tense we know; Our motion picture is one still again.Do we hear music as a single note?Does poetry seem to be a single word?Or does life's lovely melody still floatIn our airy present, like a humming bird?We also serve who only float and waitTo share the smiles of those with whom we live:Strange family of faces, strange familiar fate,One moment please, a present we can give. Our story's gone but our hearts still move;Their momentum is the memory of love.

Good People GettingScammed #6

Dear Residents,

This month we are learning about” Computer Tech Support” Scams. Beware of the Pop-Up!

In the most common computer tech support scam, victims will have a pop-up appear ontheir computer screen that will prevent them from doing anything. The pop-up may maskitself as a Microsoft dialogue box and inform the victim (computer operator) to call anumber to get a virus removed.

Page 8: 10/30/2019 email : Webview : November Newsletter · In honor of Sunshine Villa's veterans, we are collaborating Hospice Santa Cruz County for a pinning ceremony and moment of silence.

When the victim calls the phone number on the pop-up, the scammer will provide a fakename and business number such as “Max from US Infotech”. The scammer will tell thevictim that their computer has been infected with a virus and that they need to beallowed to take control of their computer to clean it and install the antivirus software. The victim is asked to pay as much as $500 for “service fees, software and damagerepair costs” using their credit card.

Another variation of this scam is a phone call from the scammer, with an offer to cleantheir computers and/or sell them a long-term technical support “service”. The scammerwill charge between $150 and $800 and may install free antivirus programs to give theillusion that they are repairing the victims’ computers.

Scammers use malware or spyware to infect victims’ computers with a virus or encryptso they can’t be used until a ransom fee is paid. If victims refuse to pay, scammers willrender the computer useless prompting the appearance of a blue screen that can onlybe removed with a password known by the scammers.

Tips from the Federal Trade Commission:

Do not give control of your computer to a third party that calls you out of the blue.

Do not rely on the caller ID to authenticate a caller. Criminals spoof caller ID numbers. They may appear to be calling from a legitimate company or a local number when theyare not even in the same country as you.

If you want to contact a tech support, look for a company’s contact information on itssoftware package on your receipt. Never provide your credit card or financial informationto someone who calls and claims to be from tech support.

If a caller pressures you to buy a computer security product or says there is asubscription fee associated with the call, hang up.

If you are concerned about your computer, call your security software company directlyand ask for help.

Make sure you have updated your computer’s anti-virus software, firewalls and popupblockers.
