IT’S NOT EASY TO REALLY BE A CHRISTIAN!
The author of the Letter to the Hebrew warns that one
must strive and work hard, because Christianity is like
a race. Jesus also speaks with clarity: if we want to
achieve true happiness, we are invited to live a certain
way. There is no promise that things will be easy. The
prophets of Jesus were persecuted. He was nailed to a
cross. We cannot think that his followers would have
it any better.
Jesus tells us in today’s gospel, “I have come to set the
earth on fire” (Lk 12:49). He does not come to say that
he will bring us comforts. No. Jesus seeks to change
this world, to revolutionize it. This is not easy.
Sometimes it causes pain and division. Sometimes you
have to fight. There are times when we will be
criticized or ridiculed for our faith. Peace will come
later. The Kingdom is coming; but first, we have to
make every effort. To obtain justice it is necessary to
fight against injustice. To obtain love requires many
acts of love and sacrifice.
What things do you sometimes set aside, because they
are difficult or make you leave your comfort zone?
What is Jesus asking you today?

El autor de la Carta a los Hebreos advierte de que habrá que
esforzarse y trabajar duro, porque el cristianismo es como
una carrera. Jesús habla también con claridad: si queremos
alcanzar la verdadera felicidad, nos invita a vivir de una
determinada manera. No nos promete que todo vaya a ser
fácil. A sus profetas los persiguieron. A Él lo clavaron en
una cruz. No podemos pensar que a sus seguidores les vaya
a ir mejor.
Nos dice Jesús en el evangelio de hoy: “He venido a traer
fuego a la tierra” (Lc .12:49). No dice que ha venido a
traernos comodidades. No. Jesús pretende cambiar este
mundo, revolucionarlo. Eso no es fácil. A veces causa dolor y
división. A veces hay que luchar. A veces seremos criticados
o ridiculizados por nuestra fe. La paz llegará después. El
Reino llegará; pero primero, hay que esforzarse. Para
conseguir la justicia es preciso luchar contra la injusticia.
Para conseguir el amor hay que hacer muchos actos de
amor y de sacrificio.
¿Qué cosas a veces dejas de lado, porque son difíciles o te
hacen abandonar tu zona de comodidad?
¿Qué te está pidiendo Jesús hoy?

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD NEEDS YOU
Children in grades Kindergarten—2nd grade have a chance to hear
the Scripture at their level during Mass. Would you consider
teaching our littlest Catholics for 25 minutes a week? Perhaps you
could co-teach with a friend? Please contact Karen in the office for

PRAYING FOR OUR PRIESTS
Are you willing to donate one hour a week to pray before the
Blessed Sacrament for Fr. Alan or Fr. Michael? We are looking for 14
praying women in the Seven Sisters Apostolate at St. Francis of

GIFT CARDS FOR OUR NEIGHBORS
Interested in helping those in need? You can buy Scrip cards for gas
or food and designate it as a "Help Your Neighbor Card". Scrip
sellers will put it in an envelope for Fr. Alan and Fr. Michael to
distribute to our neighbors in need. Stop by the Scrip table!
HELP WANTED AT THE IOWA VETERAN’S HOME
We are in need of Eucharistic Ministers to serve as substitutes when
the regular ministers cannot be there. The usual time commitment
is Wednesdays from 3:00 pm-4:30 pm. For some of the residents
this might be the only opportunity they have to receive Our Lord in
the Eucharist that week. You do not need to currently be a
Eucharistic Minister. Please contact Deacon Tom Renze (752-2133)
with questions or to volunteer.
We are also looking for help each Sunday at 10:15 am and 2:00 pm
to bring residents to other services. If you are interested in helping
with either one of these Sunday services, even if it is only once in a
while, please call the IVH Volunteer Office (753-4405) or Deacon
Tom (752-2133).
HOSPITAL VOLUNTEERS
Our hospital is in need of front door greeters at both hospital
locations and they offer flexible hours. If you are interested in more

Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic faith,
and pursuing conversion? The next round of classes will
begin in September. Call Karen at 752-6278 to learn
more. Classes will be held on Mondays at 5 - 6 pm, starting
September 16th, in the St. Henry Madonna Room. These will
replace RCIA.
MUSICIANS WORKSHOP
All musicians are encouraged to attend the first
St. Francis of Assisi Music Rehearsal, Thursday,
August 29th at 6 pm in St. Henry Church. Fr. Alan and Fr.
Michael will lead us.
MARRIAGE PREP SEMINAR
The first of the fall series begins on Thursday, September 5th
at 6 pm, in the lower level of St. Henry Center, in English and
in Spanish.
JOIN US FOR AN “EPIC” BIBLE STUDY
Beginning Sun., Sept. 8 @ 6:30 pm in the
lower level of SH parish center. We will study
“Epic” which provides Catholics with a fast-paced, panoramic
understanding of Catholic history, instilling in participants a
greater sense of meaning and identity as heirs to two-
thousand years of Catholic heritage. This study will continue
for 20 weeks, but you will be so glad you said yes! For more

MARRIAGE MENTORS NOW AVAILABLE
This past spring, 13 couples were trained
to serve as Covenant of Love Marriage
Mentors for eastern Iowa. This program helps married couples
achieve relationship goals with effective support, information,
and guidance. This process is effective for restoring and
strengthening marriages in which both spouses are open to
following God’s plan for marriage and putting into place the
practical tools provided. Whether newlyweds or married for
fifty years, and whether on the brink of divorce or just wanting
to grow deeper in a relatively good marriage, this mentoring
process can provide couples with guidance for strengthening
and sustaining their marriage. More information and
registration for couples interested in being paired with a

GRANDPARENTING: LEAVING A LEGACY OF FAITH CONFERENCE
All grandparents are invited to “Grandparenting: Leaving a
Legacy of Faith” conference on Saturday, August 24th from
9:00 am – 2:00 pm at St. Mary’s in Waverly. Connect with
other grandparents and hear from dynamic speakers on how
to leave a legacy of faith for your children and grandchildren.
