Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement

We have been called together as disciples of the Lord as St. Joseph Parish. We are united with brothers and sisters far and near in the

message and mission of Jesus Christ. As a parish family we will witness to God’s love and presence through our celebration of the sacraments, the proclamation of

God’s Word , the formation of all into discipleship and our service to others.

We are a people who are deeply Eucharistic which strengthens us for the mission that has been entrusted to us. We will use all of the God-given gifts to show that we are eager to welcome the

stranger, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and comfort the bereaved.

During the February 24th and February 26th Class the Faith Formation Program will hand out 10 Faith Moving Forward Lawn Signs. Each student that receives a lawn sign is asked to place it on his/her lawn for one week during lent. On each Sunday during Lent the family that has the sign will be asked to place the sign at a neighbor or friends house that is just a bit closer to our church. This action will be repeated each Sunday so we can help our community move forward in faith. On the last Sunday of Lent each family that has the sign will be asked to move the lawn sign to the front lawn of St. Joseph Church. This will allow all to see how the fami-lies of St. Joseph have moved forward in faith and have come home to celebrate the love Jesus has for each and every one of us. I challenge everyone during Lent to move forward in faith by sharing the love that Jesus has for you with everyone you encounter! Spreading the Love of Christ is easy you just have to be willing to move forward in your faith!

BLESSED When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude!

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The one who trusts in the LORD is like a tree planted beside the waters (Jeremiah 17:5-8). Psalm — Blessed are they who hope in the Lord (Psalm 1). Second Reading — Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20). Gospel — Blessed are you who are poor, hungry, weeping. Woe to you who are rich, filled, laughing (Luke 6:17, 20-26).

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 4:1-15, 25; Ps 50:1, 8, 16bc-17, 20-26; Mk 8:11-13 Tuesday: Gn 6:5-8; 7:1-5, 10; Ps 29:1a, 2, 3ac-4, 3b, 9c-10; Mk 8:14-21 Wednesday: Gn 8:6-13, 20-22; Ps 116:12-15, 18-19; Mk 8:22-26 Thursday: Gn 9:1-13; Ps 102:16-21, 29, 22-23; Mk 8:27-33 Friday: 1 Pt 5:1-4; Ps 23:1-3a, 4-6; Mt 16:13-19 Saturday: Heb 11:1-7; Ps 145:2-5, 10-11; Mk 9:2-13 Sunday: 1 Sm 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23; Ps 103:1-4, 8, 10, 12-13; 1 Cor 15:45-49; Lk 6:27-38

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Presidents’ Day Thursday: St. Peter Damian Friday: Chair of St. Peter the Apostle; Washington’s Birthday Saturday: St. Polycarp

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En muchos santuarios de Latinoamérica y Europa se pueden encontrar diversas ofrendas que han deja-do los fieles a través de los siglos. Entre estas ofren-das es de particular relieve el exvoto. Exvoto (una frase en latín que se traduce “del voto”) es el regalo que se le presenta al santo o a la santa en reconoci-miento del favor recibido. Esto también se llama “manda”. Los exvotos o mandas toman varias formas desde pequeñas medallas en forma de la parte del cuerpo que fue sanado hasta pinturas del milagro concedido. El exvoto más antiguo en América es de una pintura mandada a hacer por Hernán Cortés en honor de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Extremadura (España). Esta imagen reconocía el hecho de ser sal-vado del piquete de un alacrán mientras estaba en México. Lamentablemente esta pintura se extravió en el siglo XIX. En realidad el santo o la santa no necesita el ex-voto pero los creyentes sí. Estas mandas nos recuer-dan el poder de la intercesión divina en la vida humana. También nos invitan al agradecimiento de los favores que Dios nos hace. My great concern is not whether God is on our side;

my great concern is to be on God’s side. —Abraham Lincoln

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent years, there has been remarkable pro-gress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration. Now it is generally accepted that worship places need accommodations such as ramps or eleva-tors, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an assisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a distinct language with its own gram-mar, syntax (word order), and vocabulary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official lan-guage of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the ver-nacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is cele-brated this weekend in some places in total silence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL.

Saint Joseph’s HNS meets every 2nd Sunday of the month at 8:00 Mass and invites all church members to attend meetings immediately following Mass in the school cafeteria. Refreshments will be served!

COME AND JOIN US.

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

Today’s Gospel from Luke is the Sermon on the Plain with the Beatitudes, what we usually think of as the Sermon on the Mount. It seems as though Jesus is congratulating those who would have been considered unfortunate, doesn’t it? The Beatitude statements overturn the concept of “fortunate” in Jesus’ time, naming those who are poor, hungry, mourning, or marginalized as those who should rejoice. Jesus continues with prophetic and startling “Woe to you!” statements, directed to those usually thought of as blessed. Heavenly reward is not a privilege of the rich and comfortable but a blessing for all who trust in God, whose reward will be great in heaven. This Sunday, the scriptures remind us that we are blessed and beloved, especially when we have difficulties and don’t feel especially blessed. Jesus reminds us that God blesses us in our trials, so we should trust in the saving power of God. We are “raised from the dead” each time we arise from our hardships. The ultimate proof of all of this is our new life in Christ, who died so that we could be free of sin, and was raised from the dead so that we might all have new life! How incredible is that? A new life, in which hopelessness and sadness are transformed into joy and relief?

seph’s by buying your coffee and tea here. Coffee lovers have affirmed hundreds of times that this is good cof-

fee. And – great chocolate is also available.

DO YOU GRIEVE THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE? St. Leo’s Parish will begin their spring Bereavement Support Group on Tuesday, March 5th, at St. Leo’s Downstairs Meeting Room located in the Rec-tory at 324 Market Street, Elmwood Park, NJ. It will com-mence at 6:30 p.m. and conclude around 8:00 p.m. It will consist of approximately eight weekly sessions. Many people have benefited from the kind of mu-tual support a Bereavement Group can offer. Nothing can ever replace a loved one, but together, in an atmosphere of love and understanding, we hope to provide some help in coping with the grief that death brings. The ministry is open to all. Please advise any members of your family and/or friends that we welcome them with compassionate arms. If you are interested in registering or would like more information, please call the St. Leo’s Rectory for fur-ther details at 201-796-3521.
