Gospel reading ( John 10: 1 –10 ) Evangelio ( San Juan 10, 1 – 10 )
“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter the sheepfold through the gate but climbs in by another way, is a thief and a robber. But, whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers." Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not understand what he was trying to tell them. So Jesus said again, "Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”
Chapter 10 in John’s Gospel is known as the Good Shepherd discourse and it takes place at Hanukkah, the feast of the dedication of the Temple. A central reading at this feast was taken from the prophet Ezekiel 34, which condemned the false shepherds of Israel. The image of the shepherd is common in the Old Testament. Abraham, Moses, David and Amos were all shepherds, not only because of the work they did, but because they were called by God to guide the people. As shepherds seek out their flock when they are scattered, so does Jesus, the Good Shepherd, seek out those who are lost. In the Gospel of John, this passage follows the story of the man born blind in chapter 9 which ends with an attack on the Pharisees. The Pharisees did not recognize Jesus, but the people of God, symbolized by the blind man, did. Today’s reading continues the theme of attack on the “blind” shepherds of Israel.
Brief commentary
Today’s reading offers significant messages: ♦ Jesus revealed God as good and loving, not as
a thief that steals and destroys. ♦ He promised that anyone who recognizes and
follows his voice, will have abundant life. ♦ Jesus provides safety for the flock by
preventing strangers to assault them.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes: ♦ Jesús revela a Dios como bueno y amoroso, no
como si fuera un ladrón que sólo roba y destruye.
♦ Jesús promete que todos los que escuchen su voz y la sigan tendrán vida y encontrarán la plenitud.
♦ Jesús protege el rebaño evitando que sea asaltado por malhechores.
En aquel tiempo, dijo Jesús: “En verdad les digo, quien no entra por la puerta al corral de las ovejas, sino por cualquier otra parte, es un ladrón y un salteador. Pero el pastor de las ovejas entra por la puerta. El cuidador le abre, y las ovejas escuchan su voz: llama por su nombre a cada una de sus ovejas y las saca fuera del corral. Cuando ha sacado a todas las que son suyas, va caminando al frente de ellas, y lo siguen porque conocen su voz. A otro no lo seguirán: más bien huirán de él porque desconocen la voz del extraño”. Jesús propuso esta comparación, pero ellos no comprendieron lo que les quería decir. Jesús tomó entonces de nuevo la palabra: “En verdad les digo, yo soy la puerta para las ovejas. Todos los que se presentaron antes que yo son ladrones y malhechores, pero las ovejas no les hicieron caso. Yo soy la Puerta: el que entra por mí está a salvo, circula libremente y encuentra alimento. El ladrón entra solamente a robar, a matar y a destruir. Yo, en cambio, vine para que tengan vida y encuentren la plenitud”.
El capítulo 10 del Evangelio de Juan se conoce como el discurso del Buen Pastor y acontece durante Hanukkah, la fiesta judía que celebra la dedicación del Templo. Una de las lecturas principales de este día era tomada del libro de Ezequiel (34) donde el profeta condena a los falsos pastores de Israel. El concepto de pastor es muy común en el Antiguo Testamento. Abrahám, David y Amós fueron pastores, no sólo por su labor en los campos, sino porque todos habían sido llamados por Dios para guiar al pueblo. Así como los pastores buscan a sus ovejas cuando el rebaño se disgrega, Jesús, el Buen Pastor, busca a aquellos que están perdidos. Esta narrativa aparece a continuación de la historia del ciego de nacimiento en el capítulo 9, la cual concluye con un ataque a los fariseos. En esa ocasión, los fariseos no reconocieron a Jesús, pero el pueblo, simbolizado por el ciego, sí lo reconoció. La lectura de hoy continúa este ataque a los pastores “ciegos” de Israel.
