The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels & Tidbits

Gaudete Sunday Gaudete is Latin for “Rejoice!” The church tells us to rejoice, but not in a be-happy-on-demand kind of way. Advent gives you a reason to be joyful, as you are when you know that someone who deeply loves you is on her or his way. It is anticipation; it is hope that comes from trusting that the promises of God will be fulfilled. Is there a promise you need to fulfill, someone who is waiting for your visit, a phone call, a letter? Don’t wait until Christmas to bring someone joy—not with a material gift, but with a simple reminder that God is good. Do Miracles still happen? “The blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear”—all well and good for biblical times, but what about now? Some people say they can’t embrace biblical faith because miracles seem so irrational. Others believe precisely because of the “proof” miracles pro-vide. Neither position would make sense to biblical people, who viewed all natural phenomena as God’s personal activity. Hebrew scripture doesn’t use the word miracle but speaks of signs, wonders, and mighty deeds that demonstrate God’s authority in the universe. The New Testament uses Greek words for these same concepts. Theologians handle the subject of miracles a little differently. They view the miraculous as an aspect of divine revelation and name three foundational miracles by which all other claims must be tested: Creation, Exodus, and Resurrection. Would they say miracles have occurred since the time of Jesus? Emphati-cally yes. The signs of God’s power to save and transform us and our world are all around us—for those with eyes to see. St Agatha Tree As you come to the church this weekend you can see all the gifts for St Aga-tha Tree. I am so pleased to see such a generosity. I would like to acknowledge all, who took time from their busy schedule, to think and shop for those in need. Thank you and God bless. Advent Reconciliation One of the great ways of preparing yourself spiritually for Christmas is the experience of God’s love and mercy through the sacrament of Reconcilia-tion. Join us on Monday Dec. 17th at 7:30pm for our Communal Reconcilia-tion Service.

2019 Teen Mission Trip to St. Louis, MO

July 7-13

This summer, we gather to celebrate our call to be RADIANT followers of Christ. We will love as He loved, serve as He served, and boldly put our faith into action. James 1:22 re-minds us that we are to be “doers of the word and not merely hearers.” By letting our light shine bright and being witnesses for Christ. We recognize that we are designed in His im-age and, as a result, equipped for greatness. We are called to illuminate our Catholic faith in our lives and the lives of others through our words and deeds. Each of us can be a source of light to a darkened world when we lead with love and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, for He assured us in John 8:12 when He said, “I am the light of the world, He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” With these words at heart, we invite you to join Catholic Heart Workcamp in our mission to serve with radiant spirits as we embrace the exciting truth that we are…

proscribed readings. On the few Sun-days, when there is a designated feast, they may also use that feast as their topic. The expecta-tion is that the priest /deacon preach a homily that “Opens Gods’ Word” and connects that Word to the life and experiences of the congregation. The liturgical year of the Church has three perspectives: Advent/Christmas; Lent/Easter; Ordi-nary time. The Litur-gical Year begins with the first Sunday of Advent; but since the heart of our faith is the Resurrection, so the center of our liturgical year is Easter and the com-memoration of those particular events in the life of Jesus. The determination of the Easter date changes yearly. Easter is celebrated the first Sunday af-

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

On this third Sunday of Advent, I will change focus from my reflec-tions on Mass attend-ance to respond to some questions / con-cerns people have suggested. The first: How are the readings used at Sunday and Weekday Mass deter-mined? Some background may be helpful. The Sunday readings are determined by the Church; as part of an established Liturgical calendar. The priest or deacon is expected to preach at every Sunday and Holy Day Mass. They are not free to select readings they might prefer; but are obligated to reflect on the assigned readings. They are free to use all three readings as the basis for their preaching but are not required to do so. However, they must use at least one of the

ter the first full moon occurring on or after the March equinox. (I am glad others deter-mine this date and I don’t have to figure it out). Because this date is flexible, all the events connected with Jesus, preceding his Resurrection, are al-so flexible. Conse-quently, Ash Wednes-day thru to Pentecost are determined by the Easter date; this entire liturgical period is the Lent/ Easter Season. The other major Litur-gical season is Advent/Christmas. We do not know the precise day of Jesus birth, howev-er for centuries De-cember 25th has been used. It is the begin-ning of longer days –a fitting remembrance since Jesus is the light. The fourth Sun-day of Advent is the Sunday immediately before Christmas; so the other three Advent dates are determined using this timing. The Christmas season con-cludes with the feast of

REJOICE! Copyright © J.S. Paluch Co.

Today has traditionally been called “Gaudete Sunday.” The Latin tag is derived from Paul’s appeal in the second reading to “rejoice al-ways in the Lord,” and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God’s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when

there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclu-sively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only opti-mistic text in Zepha-niah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are as-sured on all sides, is

St. John the Baptist, second Sunday of January. The remaining time that is not the Advent / Christmas; Lent /Easter seasons is called Ordinary time. All the readings are found in a lectionary – not a complete Bible, but a liturgical book where specific biblical passages, taken from the Bible, are gathered for use in the Liturgy. On Sundays and Holy Days, we read three scripture passages – the first usually from the Old Testament; the second from the New Testament and the third from the Gospels.

A psalm, called a responsorial psalm, is sung/read be-tween the first and second readings. There are three cy-cles used for Sun-day readings, simply named A, B, C, read in three year cycles. This three year cy-cle provides a com-pressive exposure to scripture. In year A, the Gospel read-ings focus on Mat-thew, B, Mark and C, Luke. John is read in all three cy-cles during the East-er season. The first reading taken from the Old Testament is selected on a theme found in the

Gospel. The second reading is from the New Testament and is read a semi continu-ous cycle and not spe-cifically connected to the 1st reading or the Gospel. These read-ings are conformed to the liturgical seasons. The weekday readings are also found in a lectionary and are read in a two year cy-cle, year 1 (odd num-ber years) year 2 (even). Since the first Sunday of Advent is the begin-ning of the Church year, these cycles be-gan at this time.

“the season of joy.” Let us recapture that feel-ing of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless.

Now taking 2019/2020 Mass Intentions in Parish Office St. Francis of Assisi Parish is now receiving re-quests for specific intentions at Masses for 2019 and 2020. The Mass is the Church’s prayer at which all our needs and hopes and thanksgivings are lifted to God. Mass intentions refer to the particular pur-pose for which a specific Mass is offered. A Mass intention means that the Eucharistic sacrifice is offered for some person(s) living or dead – in memory of someone who has died, a special need, a celebration, or a specific occasion in life. To reserve a Mass Intention, please contact the parish office Monday-Friday, or stop at Parish Office after a weekend Mass. Intentions are generally limited to three per week-day Mass, and five per weekend Mass. The In-tention is generally announced during the Pray-ers of the Faithful and listed in the parish bulletin.

Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors, or the colors of the vestments worn at Mass. Rose is a color seldom seen, used at most two days a year. Today, “Gaudete Sunday,” is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an opening verse in the old Latin Mass texts: Gaudete is Latin for “Rejoice!” This year’s Gospel certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leaping for joy at the presence of Mary. Mary’s visit to her aged cousin is an act of compassion between women, as two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy. Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent, but many parishes employ different hues for each season,

trying to keep them distinct. In medieval times, dye was costly, and poor par-ishes used unornamented plain cloth for vest-ments. Dyes were expensive and some colors, particularly purple, difficult to achieve. In England, purple dye was made from mollusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not the desired violet. Thus, the color of Advent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue, reminding many people of Mary’s presence at the heart of the Advent mys-tery. That theology is largely unplanned: it’s all because of the clams!
