Why People Start…• Stress - The body’s response to a physical

or mental demand or pressure.

• Many young people start using tobacco as a way of coping with stress or uncomfortable feelings.

»In your notes list 4 feelings that might cause someone to start smoking.

Social Pressures –With your partner, brainstorm a list of

pressures in society that might cause someone to start smoking.

List at least 5.

Why is tobacco a risk?

Tobacco is an addictive drug.

An addictive drug is a substance that causes physiological or psychological dependence.

Contain nicotine, the addictive drug found in tobacco leaves.

NicotineNicotine is a stimulant – a drug that

increases the action of the central nervous system, the heart, and other organs.

Nicotine raises blood pressure, increases heart rate and contributes to heart disease and stroke.

Once addicted, people need more and more tobacco to satisfy their need for nicotine.

Tobacco Smoke is TOXICCigarette smoke is a carcinogen. This is

a cancer-causing substance.

Cigarette Smoke contains;

Tar – a thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when tobacco burns.

Carbon Monoxide – colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas.

Smokeless TobaccoSmokeless Tobacco is tobacco that is sniffed

through the nose, held in the mouth or chewed.

Since it is held in the mouth for a long time, it delivers nicotine and carcinogens 2-3 X more than a cigarette.

Causes Leukoplakia – thickened, white, leathery-looking spots on the inside of the mouth that can develop into oral cancer.

should have the right to restrict smoking?

Tobacco effects the body…Brain - Nicotine causes the release of

chemical in the brain that makes tobacco users crave tobacco.

Heart - as a result of atherosclerosis, the heart must work harder to pump blood. This extra stress on the heart can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

Lungs - smoking blocks the airways, impairs the lungs, and increases the risk of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.

Skin - smoking ages and wrinkles the skin.

Tobacco effects the body…Fingers - long term tobacco use can

stain the fingers yellow.Mouth teeth and throat…

–Tobacco causes bad breath and decrease the senses of taste and smell.

–Causes stains on teeth. It can cause gum disease, mouth, throat, and esophageal cancer.

Stomach, colon, and bladder - Tobacco can cause stomach ulcers and bladder, kidney and stomach cancers.

Tobacco effects the body…

The airways of the lungs are immediately constricted, causing decreased lung function which hinders physical

activity.

Nagging coughs and shortness of breath are common.

Increased heart rate.

Elevated blood pressure.

Tobacco effects the body…Carbon monoxide in the blood deprives

body cells of oxygen.

Thirty minutes after a cigarette, the brain undergoes nicotine depravation.

The body begins to crave additional nicotine.

Nicotine withdrawal causes dramatic mental dysfunction.

Other Consequences• Costs to society.

– Tobacco related illnesses cost the US $165 billion each year!

• Cost to individuals.– A person smoking one pack a day spends

about $1500 a year on that habit.

• Legal Consequences– Selling to people under 18 is illegal.

Using on school property leads to fines.

occurs in the body when nicotine, an addictive drug is no longer used.

• Nicotine substitutes – products that deliver small amounts of nicotine while they are trying to quit.

Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) –

is the air that has

been contaminated

by tobacco smoke.

It is composed of 2 types

Mainstream – the smoke exhaled from the

lungs of a smoker

Sidestream – the smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe,

or cigar.
