An increasing number of residents can take

the sting out of their next rate notice by

cashing it in for free plants.

Greening towns and cities is heavily

reliant on residential plantings to

supplement public parks and gardens.

Providing free plants is an enlightened way

local authorities encourage more

residential planting.

These days, few people need convincing

to go green.Leafy suburbs are viewed as more

desirable and typically command higher

property prices. We appreciate the climate

modification and fresh air greenery

provides – but more than this, research

indicates that we seek out green space for

its psychological stimulus or “biophilia”

effect.Native wildlife increasingly need

replacement habitat and encouraging the

establishment of locally endemic plants

helps save wildlife and plant species from

extinction. The number of plants handed out under

free plant schemes is impressive.

Ipswich City Council has handed out

500,000 free plants to residents from

council nurseries at Queens Park and

Goodna. They also have a mobile nursery

that brings plants to residents.

If you live in Ipswich, you can claim six

free plants per year. New home builders or

buyers are entitled to an additional

25 plants – a great

encouragement to start

planting within the first 12

months of moving in.

Increasingly, free

plant programs offer

much more than just

trees. Recognising that

not everybody has

room for even a small

tree, many local

authorities offer small to

medium shrubs, attractive

climbers, petite ground covers

and native grasses. Many of these

plants are suitable for pots; ensuring

greener townhouses, courtyards and even

balconies.Brisbane City Council has an impressive

range of free, garden-worthy plants under

its free native plants program, including the

popular little penda (Xanthostemon

verticillatus); bower vine (Pandorea

jasminoides); various forms of bottlebrush

(Callistemon species) and lilly pilly

(Syzygium species).

Residents can search the available plant

list online (brisbane.qld.gov.au) or visit their

local library to find out more. In addition to

their annual allocation, free plants are also

available to residents at council sponsored

green events. On the Sunshine Coast, local

councillors organise free tree

days (look for advertisements in local

newspapers and on social

media). City of Gold

Coast(goldcoast.qld.gov.au);

Logan City Council

(logan.qld.gov.au);

Somerset Regional

council (somerset.qld.gov.au);

Toowoomba Regional

Council (tr.qld.gov.au) and

Cassowary Coast Council

(cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au) also offer free

plants to residents.

Contact your council or local member to

find out about schemes that operate where

you live.Claiming free plants typically requires

some evidence of residency, such as a

current rates notice. Plant allocations are

I’ve been pondering whether I really need

coffee tables in my life. True, I enjoy stacking

them with potted succulents, fashion books

and little objects picked up on travels – items

I constantly rearrange to satisfy my need to

potter. But in smallish spaces, oversized des-

igns can eat up valuable floor space required

for vigorous Just Dance sessions or a spot of

Wii golf.“I personally don’t believe you need to

have a coffee table in the living room,” says

Jo Mawhinney, national retail manager of

furniture store Living Edge. “Rather than

one large coffee table, the use of several

small occasional tables is often more ben-

eficial. A series of tables can be easily moved

around the room depending on how you are

occupying the space.”

Occasional tables, slender of leg, will

cover all the bases – for cups of tea, glasses of

wine, books and TV remotes – but you may

sacrifice the hidden storage that coffee ta-

bles sometimes offer. That said, something

RELAXED VIBE: Monty's Alley at Mermaid Beach blends personality and knowledge for your caffeine hit. Pictures: Russell Shakespeare

The full Monty

The sauce could do with a little more heat, but

those spud cakes are something worth driving

from Brisbane to the Gold Coast for.

There’s also a cabinet inside filled with gluten-

free treats made by a GC local and its worth

blowing your daily calorie limit to indulge in the

pistachio and coconut bar.

My coffee – I eventually decided on a

cappuccino – was also well made and well priced

($4 for a generously portioned small) with notes of

vanilla and a smooth finish. There are also

smoothies, old-school thick shakes and icy crushes

like the fruit-packed Berry Good with blueberries

and strawberries blended with tropical sorbet.

Monty’s Alley is the handiwork of husband and

wife Nathan and Brooke Ogden and the pair has

created a winner.

“What coffee would you like?” the friendly girl

behind the counter asked as I tried to place my

order.“That one,” I said, pointing at the flavour

description of the Wilde coffee from Brisbane’s

Seven Miles the cafe had on pour.

Of course, the girl was actually asking me if I

wanted a flat white, long black or macchiato, but it

had been a rather large night the night before and

this was to be my first coffee of the day after far

too little sleep.“Clearly you need this,” she joked, after I

realised my vagueness and we had a good laugh

about my impaired mental state.

The service at Monty’s Alley at Mermaid Beach

effortlessly blends personality with patience and

knowledge, helping diners when they’re at their

most vulnerable, which is before their daily

caffeine hit. This laid-back, relaxed vibe is echoed

in the fit-out. Byron Bay artist Tere Gottlieb has brought a

splash of colour and hippy touch to the space

previously occupied by a fish and chip shop with

her mandala mural next to the register. In the

main dining area is an artwork that says “Life

happens, coffee helps”.

There’s a green wall, more brown on our visit

with the plants either suffering from too much or

too little water, and a mix of high and low tables.

Although the low, deck-style chairs and tables are

a little uncomfortable if you’re planning on

staying a while.

You will definitely want to after you take a look

at the inviting all-day menu, which is a

combination of classics and on-trend items, such

as a mango and passionfruit bowl, breakfast

burger and Nutella croissant French toast.

The Monty’s Feast is its version of a big brekky

and at $20 it’s terrific value. It comes loaded with

two slices of thick, toasted fabulous Brasserie

Bread, a runny-centred poached egg, half a roast

tomato singing with thyme, a chutney that brings

the heat, mashed avo, a cheese-topped field

mushroom, haloumi and sweet, melting beef

brisket and is simply fantastic.

It’s possibly only beat by the sensational spud

cakes ($17, pictured). The two handmade hash

browns are rendered beautifully crisp and evoke

groans of pleasure thanks to the distinct flavour

created by the Maillard reaction. They come

topped with sauteed spinach, mashed avo,

perfectly poached eggs and a mild chipotle sauce.
