The ACT elecon is now just a few days away. The elecon has provided an important opportunity for us to raise the issue of fair and sustainable territory government funding for St Clare of Assisi Primary School. As an ACT Catholic school we receive the lowest levels of state/territory government funding of any catholic school in Australia! Did you know that for each dollar of territory government funding going to a student in an ACT government school your child here at St Clare of Assisi Primary School receives just 17 cents.* By choosing to send your child St Clare of Assisi Primary School, as a Catholic school in the ACT, you are saving the ACT taxpayer more than $152 million per year. What We Have Asked For: 1. Provision of land in new growth areas to provide parents a choice for a Catholic Educaon Catholic Educaon is the second largest provider of school age educaon in the Territory aſter the ACT Government. Catholic Educaon needs to be given priority allocaon of suitable land to allow choice in educaon for the new communies and for Catholic Educaon to connue to play its significant role in meeng the Territory’s need for school age educaon. 2. Meeng the needs of students with disability Between 2009 and 2016, the number of students with disability aending Catholic schools increased by 83%. Parents choosing Catholic schools are seeking Territory Government financial support to ensure a student with a disability receives the same level of support regardless of the school they aend; 3. A commitment to progressively increase recurrent funding by 2020 Catholic Educaon seeks a commitment to increase recurrent funding from the ACT Government to 25% of the average cost of educang a student in an ACT Government school with an annual ‘cost of living’ increase in funding for Catholic schools proporonate to increases in ACT Government schools. Why Are These Commitments Important? Achievement of these commitments will ensure a sustainable base for Catholic Educaon into the future. At a school level the addional funding will assist to provide addional resources to meet school and student needs such as student support services, students with disabilies, informaon and communicaon technology costs and student wellbeing. It will also mean that increases to school fees and levies would be minimised. Later this week the Catholic Educaon Commission will be publishing for all schools the response from all the major pares to the commitments listed above. I would urge you to consider the posions of the pares and if elected what their policies will mean for our school. The responses will provide a very real policy difference for Catholic Educaon. *ACARA - My School Website February 2015 St Clare of Assisi Primary School Conder, ACT www.sca.act.edu.au P 6294 1860 F 6294 4613 E offi[email protected] By striving to ‘Be the Light’, the community of Saint Clare of Assisi believes that Jesus Christ challenges us to excellence, in a united and caring environment. The ACT election is now just a few days away. The election has provided an important opportunity for us to raise the issue of fair and sustainable territory government funding for St Clare of Assisi Primary School.

What We Have Asked For:1. Provision of land in new growth areas to provide parents a choice for a Catholic EducationCatholic Education is the second largest provider of school age education in the Territory after the ACT Government. Catholic Education needs to be given priority allocation of suitable land to allow choice in education for the new communities and for Catholic Education to continue to play its significant role in meeting the Territory’s need for school age education.

2. Meeting the needs of students with disability Between 2009 and 2016, the number of students with disability attending Catholic schools increased by 83%. Parents choosing Catholic schools are seeking Territory Government financial support to ensure a student with a disability receives the same level of support regardless of the school they attend;

3. A commitment to progressively increase recurrent funding by 2020 Catholic Education seeks a commitment to increase recurrent funding from the ACT Government to 25% of the average cost of educating a student in an ACT Government school with an annual ‘cost of living’ increase in funding for Catholic schools proportionate to increases in ACT Government schools.

Why Are These Commitments Important? Achievement of these commitments will ensure a sustainable base for Catholic Education into the future.

At a school level the additional funding will assist to provide additional resources to meet school and student needs such as student support services, students with disabilities, information and communication technology costs and student wellbeing. It will also mean that increases to school fees and levies would be minimised.

Later this week the Catholic Education Commission will be publishing for all schools the response from all the major parties to the commitments listed above. I would urge you to consider the positions of the parties and if elected what their policies will mean for our school.

The responses will provide a very real policy difference for Catholic Education.*ACARA - My School Website February 2015

BE THE LIGHT2017 CLASS GROUPINGSAs I mentioned last term we will have 24 classes next year as we move to be a 3 stream school. Teachers will shortly commence planning class groupings for 2017 and will consider the following:

• gender balance;• learning styles;• learning difficulties;• enrichment needs;• work habits;• social needs;• health considerations;• emotional needs;• behaviour considerations and • other relevant issues.

We will not be seeking parent assistance or accepting any form of request for this process. I would like to make the following points:

• We aim for an equal spread of both positive and challenging characteristics;• Every care will be taken to ensure that your child is placed in the best situation to enhance learning and

social development;• Part of life is having to deal with people and situations we may not like. We need to build resilience in

children, so they can face the reality of life;• Where appropriate, advice will be sought from the Learning Support Teacher, School Counsellor, etc

during this process; • Teachers should already be aware of any issues you have;• Teachers have the main responsibility for placing their current students in the most appropriate class

for next year;• All staff will examine the draft lists to highlight any concerns; and• As Principal, I will make the final decision on all class placements.

Students will be informed of their class placement for 2017 late this term and the opportunity will be provided for them to spend some time with their new class teacher. Class lists will not be sent home or displayed.

If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on [email protected] or make an appointment through the Front Office.

Have a good week.

Class Mass this Friday 14th October: All of Year 1

World Mission Month

On October 7, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,”

the feast day takes place in honour of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion.

Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of

the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.

The Hail Mary and The Rosary are still beloved by Catholics and non-Catholics around the world.

During October, we encourage families to take time to pray these special prayers together. Prayer time could be

in the morning together at breakfast, before dinner at night or before bed time.

October the Month of the Holy Rosary

October is also World Mission Month for awareness and fundraising of those less fortunate on a global scale.

While we will not be doing any direct fundraising this term, SCA will make a donation using some of the funds raised from our school Walkathon.

Our school will also take part in the Children’s Mission Mass to be held at St Christopher’s Cathedral, Manuka in a couple of weeks, where we will be represented by 6 Blue and 6 Green.

Please have a look at the website for information on the great work that Mission Australia do both in Australia and around the world.

Chances on each square are sold for $5. The winner receives $200. Kids and adults both love this fun event.

Community Council 2017 So what does the Community Council do?The Community Council provides the opportunity for members of the school community to support the mission of Catholic education in the school. Working with the Principal, Parish Priest and staff, the members of the Community Council and its committees provide leadership to the wider school community. The Community Council has a decision making role in certain policy areas and an advisory role in others. The policies of the school are always set within the mission of Catholic education.

The Principal has responsibility for the day-to-day leadership and management of the school. The Council has responsibility to provide advice in areas such as:• Curriculum• Educational policies for the school• Student welfare policies• Parent support processes• Other matters as requested by the Parish Priest or Principal.

So what else does a parent representative do?At the beginning of each year parent representatives are assigned a committee or area of the school to support and report back to the Community Council on. Eg Parent Network, Outside School Hours Care, etc. Meetings are held twice a term.

Tuesday 18th October 2016 6:30pm-8pm Community Council open meeting

If you interested in becoming a member of the council please come along. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Commonweath Bank of Australia ABN 48 123 123 124

Correct answer: $40 of savings.

Congratulations to all School Banking participants who have qualified for the Term 3 Prize Lights and Grand Prize competitions by displaying consistent savings behaviour. Will your child be the one to meet Robert and Bindi Irwin on a VIP visit to Australia Zoo? The Grand Prize winner will be posted at commbank.com.au/schoolbanking on 17 October. The Prize Lights winners will be posted on commbank.com.au/prizelights from 19 October.

Remember, there are more rewards before our Outback adventure is over. School Banking is releasing two Term 4 reward items that are sure to keep students saving. After completing 10 deposits, your child can redeem a Bush Fly Fan or a Wriggly Glow Worm.

Add to your child’s financial literacy While School Banking aims to make money skills more fun and engaging for your child, you can further fuel that interest at home. For example, have you explained the difference between needs and wants? A simple way to demonstrate this is to get them to help write your shopping list, placing the “needs” and the “wants” into separate columns. Then let your child find each item at the shops and tick it off their list, to reinforce the idea.

That’s one of many educational tips you’ll find in three new videos we’ve added to The Beanstalk. These short videos cover easy ways to help teach smart money management to your kids. To watch them, and to discover other insightful articles and activities, go to commbank.com.au/beanstalk

Activity: Outback checklistAs the Dollarmites prepare for their trip home through the Outback, they need to buy supplies for the road. Can your child help them work out what will be essential and what are treats they can do without? All they have to do is organise these items into “needs” and “wants”. Then add up the price tags of the wants to figure out how much the Dollarmites would save by only buying the needs.

There’s more to explore at the Canyon of Savings.
