BE THE LIGHTCHANGING DEMOGRAPHICSIn the last couple of years, our previous Principal, Brad Gaynor, wrote about the changing demographics in the Lanyon Valley and the impact it will have on schools in Tuggeranong, especially on St Clare of Assisi. With planning for 2018 definitely underway, and given our changing numbers, we will, over time, move towards being a 3 stream school.

In simple terms, Catholic Education provides the numbers of classes and staffing based on student numbers. It is up to the Leadership Team to decide how we put the puzzle together. Essentially the limit per class is 30 students, but we have always aimed for much less than that. Staffing and enrolments will be finalised in early October and I will inform you of the makeup of classes then.

BOOK FAIRThank you to Katherine Austin for planning a wonderful Book Week last week. Special thanks to Samantha McCrossen, Emma Delmenico, Emma Currey and to the many staff and parent volunteers for making the annual Book Fair a great success. We managed to sell approximately $10,000 worth of books and accessories to the students. The commission will help the school purchase new resources for the library. Thank you to parents and carers for their financial support of the Book Fair.

WINTER SPORTSCongratulations to many of our students who have been playing a range of sports over the winter months. Many parents have also been involved in coaching, umpiring/refereeing and managing teams. Thank you to all our players, coaches, officials and supporters for a very successful season. We are happy to hear about any great results to put in the Newsletter. Special thanks to Mrs Katherine Austin and Mrs Annie McArthur for coordinating our SCA Netball teams.

SUMMER UNIFORMA reminder that Summer Uniform commences in Term 4, so please check the wardrobe and visit the Clothing Pool and Savvy if any items are needed. We will have the usual transition period early in Term 4 to cater for the unpredictable weather.

A reminder that sports shoes should be predominately white and that black leather school shoes are an essential item of uniform. Several parents comment that their Year 6 child only has one term left at school. However, students also need black school shoes in high school.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETINGThe second Council meeting for this term will be at the usual time of 6.00pm next Wednesday 5th September.

It was once said…“My dad always said, ‘Don’t worry what people think, because you can’t change it.’ ~ Daisy Donovan

Blessings to all of your family.

Global School Partners 2017

This term at St Clare of Assisi, our community outreach will be focused globally. Our school will again be supporting Global School Partners and their work with underprivileged schools overseas.

Our partner school is St Joseph’s School in Kenya. Last year we were able to raise money which helped the school build new toilets and employ well-being officers who work in the school teaching the children about basic hygiene practises.

This year we would like to help them further improve their kitchen facilities and classrooms.

So to raise some money for St Joseph’s school, we will be having two ‘Monday Movie Marathons!’

At lunch time on Monday of Week 8 and Week 9, for a $2 entry fee our students will be able to come to the hall with their lunch to watch a short ‘G Rated’ movie. They will receive entry to the movie and a small treat for their $2.

It is voluntary but the more money we raise, the more support we can offer to our friends at St Joseph’s school, Kenya!

Swifts Match Report

On Saturday the Swifts played against the Holy Family Smarties. The game was an evenly matched contest, with both teams attacking and defending well. Our team came out firing and scored 3 quick goals in the first quarter. That was then followed by 2 goals in the second quarter. The girls’ defence was tight in the first three quarters and they made it difficult for the other team to move the ball into their

goal circle. The girls have been working on finding space and moving forwards to the ball during training sessions. Their hard work was evident during this game with lots of free flowing play. Well done Swifts. I look forward to two more great games before the season ends.

Slushies Match Report

The Slushies put on a display of courage and determination against an in form Electric Dolphins team last Saturday. The Slushies are to be commended on their display of excellent footwork and dedication to moving forward towards the ball. The coaches were very proud to see the girls applying the skills they have been working on at training to the game. By far the highlight of this game was the sportsmanship displayed by the Slushies. The girls should be very proud of the attitudes that they displayed in a game that saw them lose by 10 points. The display of support towards their fellow team mates and their ability to keep such a positive outlook under difficult circumstances is to be applauded. Well done Slushies on showing that sometimes success is not reflected by the scoreboard.
