It is true that the perpetrators of 9/11 and the many other terrorist acts on American soil, including the recent massacre in Orlando, have all been Muslims. All the people who belong to Al Qaeda and Isis are also Muslims. But not all Muslims belong to these terrorist groups, nor do all Muslims qualify as Islamic Jihadi Extremists. The truth is that like Jews, Christians, and Hindus, Muslims come in all kinds. Just as there are non-observant Jews, fallen away and lax Christians, and non-practicing Hindus, there are countless Muslims who don’t attend mosques, don’t observe Ramadan, seldom read the Quran, and have never been to Mecca. Are there aspects of Islam that are spoken of by the media that confuse or enrage us? Sure, but let’s keep in mind that the media are often an unreliable source of information about religious matters of all kinds. Many news outlets, for instance, have tried to portray Pope Francis as a liberal in the sense that we use that term in the US. I have read five biographies of our present Holy Father and usually read something by him or about him nearly every day. I know what a liberal is and Pope Francis is not one. But that’s another story. The truth is that when it comes to Islam and Muslims most Americans and most Catholics, for that matter, know next to nothing. The fact that some percentage of the more than one billion Muslims are violent Jihadi extremists or hate what they perceive to be a decadent western culture, doesn’t tell us much about what the Quran actually teaches about being good and faithful servants of Allah. Are you aware that there’s more written in the Quran about Mary than in the Bible? And that Muslims revere Jesus as a prophet and are looking forward to his return in glory? Let’s admit it, most of us don’t know any Muslims personally. I’ve met and talked with a few over the years and all of them acted as if all they want to do is live and let live. I side with those Muslims who believe that violent Jihadi terrorists are not true Muslims and are a disgrace to Islam. While I have no interest in traveling to Saudi Arabia and other Muslim dominated nations, nor do I want to join the ranks of Muslim hating Americans. Yes, we should carefully vet all refugees who come from countries that could easily be infiltrated by terrorists, but not on the basis of their Muslim faith alone. Violent Islamic Jihadi extremists and those who support them are the enemy, but not all Muslims.

ATTENTION

FIRST COMMUNION PARENTS

Earlier this year each child was provided with materials to create a beautiful banner to remember the day they received Holy Communion for the first time. These banners beautifully decorated the walls of the church throughout the Easter season, but now they have been taken down and are ready for you to come get them and place them in a prominent place in your home.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES MASS

FROM OTHER FORMS OF

CHRISTIAN WORSHIP?

If you’ve been to other Christian services, you could easily tell they were not offering the Mass. They were worshipping God, but not by following the order of Mass as we celebrate it in the Catholic church. This difference in worship services leads many people these days—especially youth & young adults—to conclude that it really doesn’t make any difference how we worship God, that it’s just a matter of personal preferences on the part of each church or denomination. While this approach is understandable, it nonetheless reflects a real lack of knowledge of the history of worship among Christians and our Jewish forebears.

There were two forms of worship known to the Jews: Scripture services conducted in synagogues by Rabbis, and the Temple sacrifices offered by priests. Jesus was a rabbi (i.e. teacher) who often taught in synagogues as he journeyed through Israel, Samaria, and Judea proclaiming the kingdom of God. His disciples also participated in such services. But as we learn from the NT letter to the Hebrews, Jesus was also the great “High Priest” who offered himself as a perfect and acceptable sacrifice to God on the cross at Calvary.

The Catholic Mass (Holy Eucharist) includes a scripture service which reflects the synagogue services of our forbearers that prepares us to offer the church’s Sacrifice of Praise in which we remember Christ’s Saving death on the cross. At the Last Supper, Jesus gave the disciples his body and blood in the form of bread and wine and commanded them to “take and eat, take and drink” in remembrance of me. Christ’s death on the cross was an unrepeatable sacrifice in his blood. Each time we remember his sacrifice in the Mass, the Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to experience its benefits here and now. Those benefits include: Loving unity with Christ and with all the members of his body; the forgiveness of our sins; and a foreshadowing of the heavenly Supper of the Lamb.

Catholics believe that celebrating the Mass is what Jesus intended when he said “do this in remembrance of me”. We believe that Christ also had what we do in the Mass in mind when he said that God is seeking worshippers who worship him in spirit and truth. At Mass, Christ is truly present to us in a variety of ways, but especially in the Sacrament of His Body & Blood.

ALPHA

ALPHA is the first letter of the Greek alphabet

Jesus said, “I am the ALPHA and the Omega, The Beginning and the End.”

ALPHA is the name of an introductory course to

Christianity which originated in England.

ALPHA is a tool for the New Evangelization that is being used by thousands of Catholic parishes

in over 70 countries around the world. ALPHA creates an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus. As Pope Francis likes to say, it's a

chance for "Jesus to find them.”

ALPHA is just a beginning but it makes its participants both eager and ready to understand

more fully the meaning of intentional Discipleship for Catholic Christians.

Of the more than 200 adults and teens who have experienced ALPHA at St. Andrew’s since last fall, the vast majority report that God has deeply touched their lives through it. Our next ALPHA is scheduled to begin on the last Wednesday in August at 7pm. It will begin with a meal. You may enroll at any time by contacting [email protected]

Please invite any neighbors, co-workers, or family members whether they are Catholics or not. They just need a little curiosity about questions like:

IS THIS LIFE ALL THERE IS?

WHO IS JESUS?

DID HE REALLY DIE FOR US?

WHAT IS FAITH?

WHAT IS SCRIPTURE AND HOW DO WE BENEFIT FROM IT?

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT AND WHAT DOES HE DO?

CAN WE BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

DOES GOD HEAL PEOPLE TODAY?

WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S

You can go to their website to register under our team name: St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. I will publish more information on facilitating our team in the August bulletin. It would be great to have a larger group to walk with this year! Let’s do it together…

A personal story for Heart Health

Awareness Month

Women’s heart symptoms often differ from men who feel chest pain and radiating arm pain. One symptom most commonly reported is unusual fatigue (70.6-percent). A dear friend at church needed to tell me “Caryl, you’re always saying you’re tired” before I sought a second opinion. I felt this way for 3 years before I found the right cardiologist. I thought I was simply out of shape and needed to resume a better exercise habit. Last December my new cardiologist put me on a new cardiac medicine that immediately made all the difference in the world to me. I wasn’t so tired anymore. I had energy and a sense of alertness that I hadn’t felt for so long! Of course, now, I have to realize that I am a cardiac patient and need to follow advice and adhere to doctor’s recommendations. I can hardly wait to get this walking boot off my right foot to resume walking without becoming so tired. ____________________________________________

OUR PRAYER SHAWL GROUP

The shawls are shared with people that need our prayers. Also, anyone interested in joining our group is more than welcome. We enjoy teaching others to crochet and knit. Come and pray with us. Our next group will meet June 30th at 6:30pm in the Knights Chamber. If you have yarn to donate, that would be great!
