Catholic Guidance for End-of-Life Decision Making

End-of-life decisions, for ourselves and for loved ones, are

among the most challenging we will ever face. There is a

movement in our nation to legalize assisted suicide, but that

is a false answer and is a dangerous experiment. Our Church

offers comfort and practical guidance to live and die with

dignity. Visit www.CatholicEndofLife.org to watch the video

and read the New York State Bishops’ document “Now and at

the Hour of Our Death.” Learn why the Church favors com-

passionate medical care, and why the Church opposes physi-

cian-assisted suicide.

Summer is finally here!!! We wait for it with great longing all winter. With the arrival of summer comes the start of our summer raffle. In the past our summer raffle boasted a first prize of $10,000. Sales, however, began to dip every year, and one of the reasons we discovered was that for $100 per ticket the prize was not large enough to garnish a lot of attention. We therefore changed the prize to a car or $25,000. That did better, but still not as good as we’d hoped. Some people suggested that the reason was there was no second or third prize. Two years ago we made the grand prize $20,000 and offered a second and third prize. Well, we only made the prize money the morning of the raffle! I was afraid we were going to lose money in addition to the sleep I lost worrying about the success of the raffle. Since this is our major fundraiser of the year, we realized we need to try another angle. Last year we took a shot at a 50/50 raffle. This way we automatically make money on the raffle. In order to accommodate some parishioners for whom $100 is a bit too steep, we made the tickets $50 each, and three for $100. It worked out very well. Last year, the winner received $9,850, so we will offer our raffle again this year as a 50/50. We will post in the church and announce every week what the current prize is. The more we sell, the greater the prize and the greater our earnings.

Of course, one of the aspects of successful fundraising is to bring in money from sources other than your pockets. That’s where I need your help. I ask everyone to consider selling tickets to family and friends, business associates, etc. outside St. Ann’s family. As an incentive, you will receive one free ticket for every $500 in raffles you sell for us. There is no obligation that you must sell the tickets you take. If you’d like to take some tickets on consignment, just speak to Gail in the rectory or to the people selling tickets outside of Mass. We also will be looking for volunteers to sell them after Mass, so please call Gail and volunteer to help. Let’s make this year’s summer raffle a great success!

Oppose Assisted Suicide Legislation has been introduced in New York State (the so-called “Medical Aid in Dying Act”, A.2383/S.3151) that would allow doctors to legally prescribe a lethal dose of pills at the request of a terminally ill patient. While proponents call these “death with dignity” and “patient self-determination,” in reality they are unnec-essary, flawed and dangerous. Legalizing assisted sui-cide would endanger elderly, disabled, and vulnerable people. It will send the message to others that suicide is acceptable and lead to an increase in suicides. It will leave people with depression and other mental illness-es untreated. And it will turn doctors and other health professionals from healers into killers. We encourage you to contact your state legislators and urge them to oppose assisted suicide legislation. Please inform your-self about the dangers in this bill by visiting : https://archny.org/assisted-suicide or https://noassistedsuicideny.org/
