A Message From Our Pastor.

Dear Friends, Since Cain and Abel, murder has been a tragic reality in the human condition. Whether it an individual conflict, like Cain and Abel, or a collective activity, like war, there always seems to be an effort to justify it, even though from the earliest days, it was clear in the Commandments “Thou Shalt Not Kill.” Even in today’s Gospel, the tenants in the vineyard justified their murder of the landowner’s son through their greed. But how can we respond to random killing, like what happened in Las Vegas? We are obviously concerned about terrorist attacks in this country, but the fact remains that terrorist attacks are rare, whereas in the past several years there have been over 250 cases of mass killings in the United States. We have to ask ourselves, who, other than a soldier or a police officer needs an automatic high powered rifle? If you can legally buy in a store guns that can set off enough rounds in four and a half minutes to kill 59 people and wound over 500 more, what would you need that for? Not for deer hunting surely. And why anyone with good intentions buy armor piercing (“cop killer”) bullets? Do moose wear bullet proof vests? Why is the NRA so powerful? Not because it supports the interests of sportsmen, but because it is heavily financed by gun manufacturers who buy off members of Congress and sell these weapons of mass destruction to people who have no legitimate need for them. We know that the chances that the gun lobby will be defeated in Congress is pretty slim. As long as there is money to be made, the wishes of the majority of the American people will be ignored by our elected representa-tives. Where can we go to be free from the threat of violence? There have even been mass murders in churches and in schools. In the Bible, the vineyard is a symbol for the nation of Israel. In today’s reading from Isaiah, the prophet tells us that God has given everything the nation needs to prosper but offers in return only violence and bloodshed. The parable in today’s Gospel is an elaboration on the same theme. In the light of the Las Vegas shootings, they are not easy readings. As we read it, we cannot help but point the finger at ourselves. Between the two readings, there is a pause, a moment of hope. St. Paul writes to the people of Philippi to have no anxiety. Rather, focus on what is good, is gracious, is excellent. If we continue to follow the Lord, doing as we have been taught, the God of peace will be with us. That is our only consolation living in these difficult times, made more difficult by the inability or lack of willingness on the part of our leaders to do anything to limit access to high powered weapons. May the Lord of Life be always with us. May He lead through the perils of this world to true security and peace. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso

APPRECIATING THE ART IN ST. CECILIA CHURCH

The three statues on the West Tower of St. Cecilia Church are:

1. Our Lady of the Assumption. Notice she does not have the Baby Jesus in her arms and is being lifted up to heaven with the heads of angels at her feet. If it were the Immaculate Conception, she would be portrayed crushing the serpent beneath her feet. Most other images of Mary have her holding the Baby Jesus. Our Lady of the Assumption is the patroness of New Brunswick.

2. St. Joseph, patron of Quebec. St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal is the largest church in Canada.

3. St. Anne, co-patron of Quebec. The Shrine of Ste. Anne de Beaupre has been a pilgrimage site for people throughout North America for over a century.

The three statues were chosen to commemorate the parts of Canada that the founders of our parish came from.

ATTENTION SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS

We know you receive many appeals from many worthy groups.

Why is this one different?

The funds raised for this Fair go directly to the support of your Parish. One of the Christmas in Acadia Fair's primary sources of support is the voluntary booth sponsorship. You can help this

meaningful Parish function with a $50.00 donation which is tax deductible and is most critical to our

success. In return we will prominently display a sign with your Company name or a private name as

a booth sponsor.

Whether your business is small or large all businesses are welcome to help in this worthwhile fundraiser. Can we please count on you? For more information, contact BettyAnn at the Rectory

978-537-6541.

Once again we will be taking calls for the Giving Tree. The Giving Tree request

line is 978-962-1715. We will begin taking requests on October 10th through

Nov. 9th. This is a once a year opportunity to put a smile on a child’s face who

otherwise might not have a present under their Christmas Tree. If you or

someone you know needs assistance, you are encouraged to call this number.

At Carter Park on Main St., Leominster (across from St. Leo’s)

On October 14th from 12 Noon to 2 PM In this historic year of the Fatima Centennial (1917-2017), the world is at a historic crossroad. God will hear us, if we pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. That’s why we’re doing the 2017 Public Square Rosary Crusade. In The Secret of the Rosary, St. Louis de Montfort said: “Public prayers is far more powerful that private prayer to down God’s mercy, and Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, has always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering”.
