All Catholics are welcome to join us in prayer for Hong Kong. Hosted by the inter-Church group “Vancouver Christians for Love, Peace and

Justice 溫哥華基督徒守護愛與和平公義團契”, of which Eastern Catholic Church Richmond (Fr. Richard Soo, SJ) is one of the organizers. We pray for love, peace and justice in Hong Kong and for its people. The prayer dervice will include hymns, sacred Scripture, a litany, silent private prayer time, a guided meditation (by Fr. Richard), and an opportunity for faith sharing our spiritual journey/experiences. Sunday, October 13, 3- 4 pm at Tenth Church, 11 W. 10th Ave, Vancouver.

Rosary Rally

Come to pray the Rosary in honour of Our Lady, to make reparation to her for sins committed against her Immaculate Heart, and to beg graces from her Divine Son, through her; with public witness to the faith. The next rally takes place October 19 at 10 am at the Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza..

Socks and Underwear!

When you are preparing the table for your family this Thanksgiving please pray for the Archdiocesan Men's Hostel. Our guests desperately need new socks and underwear. We host just under 2,000 unique individual men every year with our Emergency Homeless Shelter Ministry. Fall is here and that means cold, wet weather. We give many pairs of socks, underwear as well as gloves, scarves, toques, and jackets. However, we do not have enough, especially socks and underwear. Any sizes, colours, styles, will be much appreciated. Ideally, bring them to the Men’s Hostel at 828 Cambie Street Downtown, but if you cannot, take them to the John Paul II Pastoral Care Centre at 4885 St. John Paul II Way, Vancouver.

Thanksgiving Mass for the Canonization of St. John Henry Newman

Celebrate with us the historic occasion of Newman’s canonization! This Mass of Thanksgiving will be presided by Archbishop Miller on Sunday, October 27, at 7 pm at St. Mark's Church in Vancouver. Refreshments afterwards

Stewardship Reflections

“Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to

God?” (Luke 17:18)

Most of us live “easy” lives. We have food, shelter, and clothing. We go on vacation every year and own a car

or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions

are usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t this be the other way around? Take time every day and thank God

for all He has given you.

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

This coming Monday is Thanksgiving Day in Canada. It is a

holiday, but I hope for everyone who might read this, more than just a day

off work. It is a time to give thanks.

Robert Emmons, professor of psychology at the University of

California, Davis, and perhaps the world expert in gratitude research,

summarizes some of the chief findings in the scientific study of the practice

of gratitude: Experiencing gratitude leads to increased feelings of

connectedness, improved relationships, and even altruism. We have also

found that when people experience gratitude, they feel more loving, more

forgiving, and closer to God. Dozens of research studies with diverse

participant groups have also revealed that the practice of gratitude leads to

the following:

• Increased feelings of energy, alertness, enthusiasm, and vigor

• Success in achieving personal goals

• Better coping with stress

• A sense of closure in traumatic memories

• Bolstered feelings of self-worth and self-confidence

• Solidified and secure social relationships

• Generosity and helpfulness

• Prolonging of enjoyment produced by pleasurable experiences

• Improved cardiac health through increases in vagal tone

• Greater sense of purpose and resilience

One survey found that Thanksgiving Day (in the US) is the

favorite day of the year. On Thanksgiving, people stop focusing on what

they don’t have and rejoice in what they do have. Thanksgiving Day also

has the fewest number of suicides. Gratitude literally saves lives.

Catholics have the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving every

Sunday, or even more often for that matter. The Mass is a celebration of

the Eucharist, which is the Greek term for thanksgiving. At every Mass,

we can consider all that we have been given by God and in grateful joy

give back to God our awareness and gratitude for these gifts. Each

Eucharist can become a thank you note to God who has done us a great

service. It is no accident that the last words of each Mass are “Thanks be to

God.” Nor is it an accident that people of faith are more grateful and

happier.

Take time, make time, on Thanksgiving Day to be thankful to

God for all of your blessings. Name three (there are more, but start with

three), blessings that you have. Try this every day (always remember this at

Mass) and see how much better you are.

Everyone knows by now that we are celebrating my 60th birthday

on November 16th, as a fundraiser for the new school and parish center.

Tickets are on sale after each Mass! Donations are welcome, and tax

receipts will be given. This is a great way for the parish to come together

and pool our resources for the future education of our children, and the

coming together of our parish community in the new Hall.

Let us strive to be faithful to the prayer of the Rosary during this month of

October.

Secrets of the Spiritual Realm: 12 Angelic Facts Every Christian Must Know

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to de-vour.” – 1 Peter 5.8 Are humans alone in the universe as intelligent beings? The Catholic Church has always believed and taught that the answer is no: the universe is in fact filled with many kinds of intelligent, other-worldly beings that we call angels. And they are up to all sorts of amazing things! Here are 12 important things for all Christians to know about these mysterious beings from another realm:

1) Angels are absolutely real Angels are not just a pious fiction or a superstition: they are absolutely, positively real – as a real as you and me and anything else. They are actively involved in our world and play a crucial role in human history. (CCC 328)

2) Every Christian has a guardian angel The Catechism quotes St. Basil saying “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.” (CCC 336)

3) Demons are also very real All angels were originally created good, but some angels made a choice to disobey God. These fallen angels are called “demons.” Hell was originally prepared as a place for demons. (CCC 391ff; Matthew 25.41)

4) There is a dramatic spiritual war going on for human souls The choice to fall away from God was irrevocable for demons. But humans, at least as long as they are alive on earth, still have a choice. Angels and demons are engaged at this moment in a dramatic spiritual war, battling to influence human souls either toward or away from God.

Satan tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and demons continue to tempt human beings away from God today. (CCC 391ff)

5) St. Michael the Archangel is the leader of the Lord’s angelic armies St. Michael is a faithful angel who leads good angels in spiritual battle against fallen ones. His name literally means “Who is like God?,” which represents his faithfulness to God when other angels rebelled. (cf. Revelation 12.7)

Page 8: 13, 2019 Our Mission: Eucharistic Emmaus Adoration Chapel

6) Satan is a leader of the fallen angels Like all demons, he was originally a good angel who chose to turn away from God. As a creature, he remains finite and subject to God’s providence. (CCC 391, 395)

In the Gospels, Jesus resisted Satan’s temptations (Matthew 4, Luke 4), called him the “father of lies,” a “murderer from the beginning” (John 8.44), and said Satan came only to “steal and kill and destroy” (John 10.10).

7) Any involvement with the occult or demonic forces is gravely sinful Demonic forces are nothing but evil and humans should have nothing to do with them. Any involvement in the occult – whether it be divination, horoscopes, clairvoyance, mediums, etc – even if with “good” or “innocent” in-tentions, is gravely sinful and highly dangerous. (CCC 2116-2117)

8) Exorcism remains an active practice of the Church In the Gospels, Christ and his Apostles regularly make explicit battle against demons, often exorcizing them from possessed individuals. The Church continues this act of spiritual warfare for the good of souls.

A minor exorcism is included in the baptismal rite. In the case of demonic possession, priests with special permis-sion from their bishop can perform solemn exorcisms. (CCC 1237, 1673, 550)

9) We can also engage in spiritual battle through prayer and other spiritual practices The Our Father prayer, given by Christ himself, includes a request to “deliver us from evil.” The Church also en-courages the use of the Prayer to Saint Michael. Written by Pope Leo XIII, it calls for the final imprisonment of Sa-tan to hell. Fasting has also been traditionally used as a spiritual weapon.

But the best way to aid the fight against demonic forces is to simply live a holy life following after Christ.

10) Many saints have engaged in explicit, even physical, battles with demons Beating them up, appearing as terrifying beasts, making dreadful sounds, even setting things on fire; you can read the incredible stories of St. Anthony the Great, St. Padre Pio, St. Gemma Galgani, St. John Vianney, and St. Teresa of Avila in this article.

11) Satan was definitively defeated by Christ In his passion, death, and resurrection, Jesus definitively defeated the powers of Satan. This fact is progressive-ly manifested in the history of the Church until the Second Coming of Christ. (cf. CCC 550)

12) Christ is the King of the whole angelic world Jesus Christ is the King of the Universe, and that includes the spiritual realm. Angels were created by Christ at the beginning of the world to be his servants. Even demons, who have chosen to disobey God, ultimately remain un-der the control of God’s providence. (CCC 331)

St. Michael, please protect us in battle!
