Makhado police spokesperson Const Irene Radzilane confirmed on Wednesday that the police are aware of the second incident and are inves- tigating a case of enticement to commit murder and a case of intimidation. “The investigation is continuing, but at this stage the two cases have not been linked,” Radzi- lane said. At provincial level, the police are also looking into the inci- dents. “The matter was brought to the attention of the crime intelligence unit and is being inves- tigated,” said provin- cial police spokesperson Col. Ronel Otto. In the meantime, speculation is rife as to what might have motivated these attacks on Mut- shinyali. Many believe that it is in retaliation of the external investigation Mutshinyali launched at the end of last year, following allegations of corruption with regard to tender payments made without actual services being rendered. Last week, the Zoutpansberger reported on what Mutshinyali was sure was a failed attempt on his life on Saturday, 21 February. As dit nie vuil water is nie, is dit geen water.Inwoners moes sedert verlede week weer inder-
haas houers uithaal, nadat krane in Louis Trichardt drooggeloop het. In party gevalle was die water so van die modder dat dit nie eens bruikbaar was vir die mees basiese dinge soos bad en wasgoed nie.
Die rede is glo ‘n geskil tussen die Vhembe Distriksmunisipaliteit (VDM) en die Makhado Munisipaliteit (MM) oor ‘n onbetaalde elek-trisiteitsrekening. Die VDM is verantwoordelik vir watervoorsiening aan Louis Trichardt en die omliggende areas, maar omdat hulle glo nie hul rekening betaal het nie, is die kragtoevoer na hul waterpompe deur die MM afgesny.
Die Louis Trichardt-tak van die burgerregtelike organisasie, AfriForum, het ingegryp nadat die watervlakke in die Mowkop reservoir tot 25% gedaal het. ‘n Prokureursbrief is gekry om die elektrisiteits toevoer weer aan te sluit, sodat daar weer water gepomp kon word. Volgens plaaslike AfriForum voorsitter mnr. Wally Schultz het die MM inwoners tegemoetgekom ná AfriForum se
prokureurs ‘n aanmaningsbrief uitgestuur het. “Die Makhado Munisipaliteit het laat weet dat hulle die elektrisiteit weer tydelik sal aansit, sodat inwoners nie gestraf word sonder water nie,” het Schultz gesê.
“Die mense betaal vir die dienste wat vir hulle gelewer word. Die probleem kom by staatsin-stellings wat nie daardie fondse gebruik vir die doel waarvoor dit ingevorder is nie. Hierdie bakleiery is besig om waterdienslewering te stuit en dis onaanvaarbaar,” het mnr. Morné Mostert, Limpopo koördineerder vir AfriForum, bygevoeg.
Schultz en Mostert het gesê dat AfriForum die watersituasie fyn sal dophou en, as daar nie vinnig ‘n verbetering kom nie, regstappe sal volg.
Intussen het inwoners wat aan die onderkant van Rissikstraat woon vir die afgelope twee weke las met vuil water. “Kyk hoe lyk die water vandag wat veronderstel is om gedrink te kan word,” het ‘n ontstelde me. Belinda van Wyngaardt die koerant laat weet. Navrae gerig aan die VDM hieromtrent is teen druktyd nie beantwoord nie.

Concern is growing among residents of the region that the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) is border-line bankrupt, if not bankrupt already.
VDM spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai as-sured the Zoutpansberger on Wednesday, however, that the municipality is not bankrupt. “You are only bankrupt if you’ve used up your entire budget and grant money,” he said. He admitted, however, that they are facing some challenges.
In January this year, strike action was looming at the VDM, with employees downing tools out of protest for not getting paid their salaries on time. At that stage, the provincial leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Mr Jacques Smalle, argued that the municipality was already bankrupt as their salary bill was in the region of R20 million a month while they only had R7 million in their bank account.
In response, Ralushai admitted that salary pay-ments for January were delayed but that payments were eventually made. He attributed the late payment to a cash-flow problem the VDM had ex-perienced at the time but added that the VDM was financially stable. The question at that stage was where the VDM got the money from to pay the sal-aries. Mid-February, Smalle indicated that the DA would be calling on the MEC for Cooperative Gov-ernance in Limpopo, Ms Makoma Makhurupetje, to invoke Section 139 (1) of the Constitution, whereby the provinces would be obliged to intervene if there were financial crises at municipalities. The reason for this, Smalle said, was that the DA had noted the “unacceptable conduct by the municipality to utilise the municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) to pay salaries of the employees instead of applying the funds for the intended purposes.” He stated that, according to the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and MIG policy, these grants could not be used to finance operational expenditure other than the prescribed to the percentage permitted for the operation of project costs.
This fuelled speculation once more that the VDM was facing a more serious financial crisis than a
mere cash-flow problem. “Last year, the municipal-ity failed to compile the financial report timeously and refused to return R167 million to the national treasury because of underspending. The vexatious disregard of the PMFA regulations resulted in the treasury’s withholding a portion of their equitable share, which led to non-payment and/or late pay-ment of creditors,” Smalle said. He said the fact that several key positions at the municipality remained vacant did not help the situation either, referring to the vacant position of the municipal manager, chief financial officer, infrastructure general manager and community service general manager. “It is clear that urgent intervention is needed to acceler-ate services to the people in Vhembe. The DA has already requested MEC Makhurupetje to establish a forensic investigation into the financial affairs of the municipality,” Smalle said.
After almost three weeks of trying to elicit a response from the VDM regarding Smalle’s al-legations, Ralushai responded on Wednesday by vehemently denying that grant money was being used to pay salaries. “The municipality made an arrangement with the bank to pay salaries,” Ralushai said. He said people must remember that grant money was given conditionally and that the process was strictly controlled. He again stated categorically that the VDM did not use any grant money to finance their operational expenditure and that all grant money they received was being used to fund the projects it had been allocated for.
Ralushai admitted that vacancies in key posi-tions at the municipality were also of concern to them. The situation was not improved when their assisting municipal manager resigned at the end of February. According to Ralushai they were, however, addressing the issue. He indicated that they had already asked the provincial government for assistance and that the province had deployed an administrator to act as interim accounting officer. This interim administrator took office on Monday. The positions of chief financial officer, infrastructure general manager and community
service general manager remain vacant, however. “The position of municipal manager has been advertised, but a suitable candidate has not been identified,” Ralushai said.
To add insult to injury regarding the VDM’s financial affairs, members of the Sherriff’s office confiscated millions of rands worth of vehicles and office equipment on Friday. This after the Polokwane High Court had ruled in favour of a former contractor, NW Engineering, in a R14 million lawsuit against the VDM. The contractor took the VDM to court after they had terminated their contract with him for the construction of a new reservoir in Louis Trichardt in 2008. The
contractor initially won the lawsuit for unfair termination of his contract, but the VDM took it on appeal, which they lost. Asked how this would impact on the day-to-day running of the VDM, Ralushai said that, following Friday’s seizure of good at their offices, their legal team met with the contractor on Saturday. “The matter was resolved during Saturday’s legal engagement and all goods were returned on Sunday morning,” Ralushai said.
In conclusion, Ralushai was asked if the VDM was able to pay their officials and employees on time at the end of February. He said that all employ-ees had been paid without any problems. “All our service providers were also paid,” he said.

Smail het in Desember 2009, net voor die skietvoorval, ge-dreig om vir Joachim, Buys en hulle vriende, Levit Harris en Dominique Buys, te skiet. Smail het getuig dat hy daar-van oortuig was dat hulle by sy onderneming, Smails Foun-tain op Buysdorp, by verskeie geleenthede ingebreek het. Sy verweer was dat hy Joachim se groep gekonfronteer het, maar nie bedoel het om hulle te skiet nie. Smail het getuig dat hy
blindelings skote afgevuur het. Sergio is in die kop getref en Joachim in die bolyf. Harris en Dominique het ontsnap.
Landdros Pat Cloete het Smail vir elk van die moord-klagte agt jaar gevangenisstraf opgelê en vir die twee klagte van poging tot moord gesamentlik vier jaar. Smail sal sy tronkstraf samelopend uitdien, wat beteken hy sal effektief na ses jaar kan kwalifiseer vir parool. Cloete het in sy uitspraak gesê Smail het geen berou getoon vir sy dade nie, en ook geen poging aangewend om met die familie van die oorledenes kontak te maak en hul vergifnis te vra nie.
Smail se regsverteenwoor-diger het dadelik ‘n aansoek om verlof tot appèl gebring, wat deur Cloete van die hand gewys is. Alexander Smail (66).

Ooskring beloon top leerders en onniesSkole, leerlinge en onderwysers van die Sout-pansberg-Ooskring is Vrydag, 6 Maart, vereer vir hulle prestasies gedurende 2014.
Die geleentheid was die Limpopo Departement van Basiese Onderwys se Ooskring prysuitdeling-funksie vir uitnemendheid wat by Hoërskool Louis Trichardt aangebied is.
Verskeie uitgelese gaste het dié geleentheid bygewoon, waar daar ook geleentheid gegee is aan van die skole in die streek om ‘n paar uitvoe-rings te doen. Veral die Xibelani dansers het groot aftrek geniet.
Die streekbestuurder van die Soutpansberg Ooskring, mnr. Falaza Baloyi, was ook teenwoor-dig. Hy het al die pryswenners gelukgewens met hul prestasies en bedank dat hulle so hard en getrou gewerk het. In dieselfde asem het hy egter ook sy ontevredenheid uitgespreek dat die Ooskring beter kon gevaar het, en het die 2015 onderwysers en studente aangemoedig om hard te werk, sodat sy kring volgende keer eersteplek wen.
“Sewe van Vhembe se leerlinge het onder die top 20 geëindig, maar ek sal nie tevrede wees totdat
Vhembe onder die top drie eindig van al die streke in Limpopo nie,” het Baloyi gesê.
Tydens die geleentheid is sertifikate en trofees oorhandig aan al die leerlinge wat onderskeidings behaal het, asook skole wat ‘n 100% matriek-slaagsyfer behaal het gedurende 2014. Hoërskool Louis Trichardt is beloon vir hul 2014 matriekuit-slae en ontvang twee sertifikate as skool wat die meeste onderskeidings opgelewer het, asook die skool wat die meeste leerlinge gehad het wat met matriekvrystelling geslaag het.
Die beste matriekleerlinge in die streek was Tshiluna Mpho Bless, gevolg deur Itha Nomsa en Khalirendwe Maiwashe. Hulle was ongelukkig nie daar om hul kontantpryse persoonlik in ontvangs te neem nie.
Tydens verlede Vrydag se prysuitdeling van die Limpopo Departement van Onderwys is daar ook ‘n tradisionele Xibelani dans uitgevoer vir die gaste.
Die streeksbestuurder van die Soutpansberg Oos-kring, mnr. Falaza Baloyi, aan die woord tydens verlede Vrydag se prysuitdeling.
Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se toponderwysers wat almal 100% slaagfsyfer in hulle onderskeie vakke gehad het. Voor, van links na regs, is mev. Sarita Botha, mev. Anette de Klerk en mev. Elsa Retief. In die middel is mev. Retha Jordaan, mev. Hanien Minnie en mej. Anri Viljoen. Agter is mnr. Bethuel Tshivenga, mev. Marie van Niekerk en mev. Johanna Steyn.

Terwyl hulle nog worstel met die hartseer van hul pa se dood, het die ongeluk weereens die Rasool-fam-ilie van Cycle Centre in Louis Trichardt getref.
Dié familiebesigheid was vroeg Maandagoggend die teiken van ‘n groep inbrekers wat geen moeite ontsien het om toegang tot die perseel te kry nie.
Volgens Mehboob (Bobby) Rasool, wat nou saam met sy broer Muham-med en ma Shahida die winkel bedryf ná die hartseer dood van eggenoot en pa Mohamed op 12 Februarie, kom die inbraak op ‘n baie slegte tyd. Hulle was Maandagoggend steeds stomge-slaan oor die duisende rande se skade wat deur die inbrekers aangerig is, in teenstelling met die skrale beloning wat hulle vir hul moeite ontvang het. Op die ou einde is net meer as R300 se kleingeld uit een van die kasre gis-ters gesteel.
Die Rasools se nagrus is net na 04:30 Maandag deur ‘n oproep van hul sekuriteitsfirma versteur. Dié het hulle ingelig dat die alarm by hul winkel geaktiveer is.
Die sekuriteitsmaatskappy het da-delik gereageer en drie inbre kers in die perseel gewaar met hul aankoms. Ongelukkig kon die drie misdadi-gers arrestasie ontglip deur haastig in verskillende windrigtings te laat spaander.
By nadere ondersoek het dit geblyk dat die booswigte via die buurperseel se dak toegang tot die winkel probeer verkry het. Die sinkplate op die win-keldak is geknip, reg bokant een van
die sekuriteitsogies. Dié is stukkend geslaan. “Hulle kon blykbaar nie deur die dak inkom nie, want dit was te hoog,” sê Bobby.
As ‘n plan B het die inbrekers toe maar deur die agter- en voorkant van die winkel toegang probeer bekom. Agter het hulle ook gesukkel, maar voor was hulle meer suksesvol. Die groot slotte wat die swaar rol-dief-wering voor die vertoonvensters vashou, is voor een van die vensters geknip. Daar is die vertoonvenster met geweld uitforseer. Toe hulle eers in die perseel is, het die diewe reguit na die kantoortjie gegaan waar die alarmstelsel se beheerkonsole en sleu-telbord was. Dié is stukkend geslaan.
Teen dié tyd het die sekurite-itsmaatskappy gelukkig reeds ‘n alarmsein ontvang.
“Ons vermoed hulle het net te min tyd gehad, want ons sekuriteitsmaats-kappy was baie vinnig op die toneel,” sê Bobby. Hy is dankbaar dat die diewe nie meer tyd gehad het om skade aan te rig nie. Hul voorraad blyk alles daar te wees. “Met die tyd sal mens agterkom wat weg is,” het Bobby gesê.
Volgens Bobby is hulle nog altyd baie gelukkig gewees om nie inbrake te hê nie. “Dit is seker 25 jaar laas dat so iets gebeur het,” sê Bobby. Hy is egter bekommerd oor die huidige misdaadsituasie in Eltivillas.
“Vanaf Desember het misdadigers redelik aktief begin raak. Daar was die laaste paar maande ‘n hele paar gevalle van diefstalle en inbrake in Eltivillas,” sê Bobby.

• ANNUAL EBENEZER MILE The region’s swimmers can start preparing them-selves for the annual Ebenezer Mile on Saturday, 21 March.
This popular annual open-water swim has been hosted by the Haenertsburg Rotary Club at the Mountain Yacht Club for the past 13 years.
In the mile swim (1 600m), there are separate categories for males and females of 13 years and younger and 31 years and older, as well as an open category for males and females between 14 and 30 years. Males and females of all ages can also compete in the 3 000 m swim, as well as the 500 m “fun” course.
The entry fee for the 3 000 m and mile swim is R115 for online entries or R130 on the day of the race. There is a family discount of R105 for three or more family members participating. Participa-tion in the 500 m event costs R80.

• MUNNIK MEERKAT MTB CHALLENGE Good news for the region’s mountain bike cyclists is that the an-nual Munnik Meerkat MTB Challenge, pre-sented by Castle Lite, is around the corner once more.
This year, the pop-ular race will take place on 21 March and will serve as a qualifying race for Limpopo colours. A day-license fee of R35 is only payable if cyclists do not hold a valid CSA license.
Once again, Pietersburg Rotary Club 100 will be catering for the event and will start serving food from 06:00 and SA Breweries will be hosting a small beer garden throughout the day. As usual, two mountain bikes are up for grabs in a raffl e (one men’s and one ladies’ bike).
This race is affi liated to the P&L Cycle Club in Louis Trichardt and Johan van Dijkhorst is once again the race organiser. Race Time will be doing the offi cial timing of the event.

MEI• TURBI HILLS MTB RACE The MOTHs in Louis Trichardt will soon be hosting their ever popular annual Turbi Hills MTB Race, on 23 May.
The Ridgeway Independent School will again play host to this event, with registration taking place from 06:30 until 07:30 on the day of the race. The fi rst race starts at 08:00 and cyclists will be able to compete in the 50km, 30km or 8km race. A kiddies’ race for the very young is also on the cards. • VOËLKLUB BESOEK NYLS-VLEY Die Soutpansberg Voëlklub se vol-gende maandelikse uitstappie is na die Nylsvley Natuurreservaat op 28 Maart en alle lede en belangstellendes is welkom om dit by te woon.
Nylsvley is ‘n bekende vloedvlakte net buite Modimolle. Die reservaat huisves ongeveer 365 voëlspesies, waarvan 37 Rooi Data spesies is, 72 soogdierspesies en 600 plantspesies. Dit is ook ‘n RAMSAR-gebied, wat dit ‘n baie belangrike res-ervaat maak. Belangstellendes moet egter vroeg-tydig bevestig om hulle wil saamgaan, aangesien daar vroegtydig plek bespreek moet word.

• AP KERK VISVANGDAG Die AP Kerk Louis Trichardt-gemeente bied op Saterd-ag, 14 Maart, ‘n visvangdag aan met hope pret en plesier vir die jongklomp op die plaas van die Van der Merwes agter die Soutpansberg.
Kaartjies vir die dag beloop R100 per volwas-sene en R50 vir kinders en kan gekoop word by K&L Safety Ware te Erasmusstraat 30.
Mense kan ook ‘n tent- of karavaanstaanplek bespreek en oorslaap vir R200 per staanplek. Daar sal ook die dag ‘n waterwurm en speletjies wees vir die jongklomp en pryse vir die kind wat die grootste vis vang.

• STARGAZING AT BLOU-BERG The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) and Friends of Blouberg invite residents for a weekend of stargazing at the Blouberg Nature Reserve on 17 and 18 April.
Two of the solar system’s giant gas planets will be visible, with Jupiter fi rst up, followed by Saturn. The fi rst part of the evening will see the constellation of Orion setting in the west, with the constellation Scorpius rising on the opposite side. “The region between these two constellations is fi lled with stellar delights, from open and globular clusters of stars and bright nebulae to galaxies and contrasting and colourful double stars,” says Mr Kos Coronaios of the SAC. Two 10-inch telescopes will be available with views of some of these deep-sky objects projected onto a big screen.
• FOOD, WINE AND BEER FES-TIVAL Residents of the Soutpansberg are invited to the Haenertsburg Food, Wine and Beer Festival from 1 to 3 May.
Previously the Kiwi Festival, this festival has now become one of Limpopo’s premier food festivals. “Enjoy three days of pure, shameless foodie delight,” invite the organisers.

Die drie is op Dinsdag, 1 Maart 1994, om 08:45 in die Pietersburg Privaathospitaal gebore. Luan het by geboorte 2,150 kg geweeg, met broers Frank en Neil wat die skaal onderskeidelik op 1,920 kg en 2,210 kg getrek het. “Ons is baie dankbaar dat die Here ons geseën het met die drie pragtig kinders en dat hulle vir ons net vreugde gegee het in die afgelope jare,” sê die trotse ouers. Laun, die oudste, woon en werk tans in Polokwane. Frank, die middelste een, werk en woon in Louis Trichardt en Niel, die “jongste”, werk en woon in Levubu. Die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe

Het jy al ooit gewonder wat jy anders sou doen as jy jou lewe oor kon leef?
Sou jy dieselfde loopbaan kies, in dieselfde dorp bly, sou jy getrou het?
Baie van die mense in Korinte is heeltemal verteer deur die gedagte wat hulle kon wees was dit nie vir die foute wat hulle gemaak het, of weens omstan-dighede buite hul beheer nie. Hulle het gely aan die “as ek maar net” sindroom, en vandag nog ly baie mense aan hierdie sindroom. ‘n Voorbeeld hiervan is: “As ek maar net universiteit toe gegaan het”, of “As ek maar ‘n ander loopbaan gekies het.”
In Korinte was van die Joodse bekeer-linge spyt dat hulle besny was, terwyl die heiden bekeerlinge spyt was dat hulle nie besny was nie. Die slawe was weer ontevrede omdat hulle nie vry was nie.
Vers 17 leer ons om tevrede te wees met ons omstandighede. Dit maak nie saak of iemand besny is of nie, slaaf of vry nie. Die slaaf is in elk geval vry in Christus en die vry man ‘n slaaf van Christus (vers 22).
Die kern van hierdie gedeelte is vers 19: “Dit kom nie daarop aan of iemand besny is of nie, maar wel of hy die geb-ooie van God onderhou.”

Plore kom by die sitkamer ingehardloop.“Daisy, is jy ok?” vra hy angstig.
Trane loop oor haar wange en dit neem ‘n rukkie vir Plore om agter te kom dat sy gunste-ling tante nie huil nie, maar lag. Onkeerbaar, welluidend en diep uit haar maag uit. Elke keer wanneer sy haar oë afvee en hikkend probeer ophou, tref nog ‘n lagstorm haar.
Plore, nou seker daarvan dat sy tante haar nie aan weemoed oorgegee het nie, is steeds onrus-tig aan die rondkyk vir ‘n leë wynglas of pil-boksie wat die onheilige gelag dalk veroorsaak het. Dit laat Daisy nog meer lag. Sy beduie vir Plore na haar voete toe. Uiteindelik snap Plore – die boek wat by haar voete lê is Die Oorsaak. Teen dié tyd is Plore reeds aan die lag – vir Dai-sy. Vir ‘n goeie tien minute dreig histerie.
“Kan nie meer nie, Plore! Hou nou op ... Kan nie...” Daisy is uitasem. Sy vee haar oë en neus aan haar T-hemp se mou af. Plore lê op die ander bank, net so uitasem. Af en toe gee hy
‘n laaste hik en proes. Uiteindelik lyk en klink hulle weer na mense sonder verkoue of hoë bloeddruk.
“Ok, Daisy, ek gaan maak vir ons rooibostee met warm melk soos my ma altyd maak in ‘n krisis en dan moet jy asseblief vertel hoekom ons so gelag het.”
Daisy begin sommer vertel terwyl Plore doe-nig raak met teeketels en dinge.
“Plore, my gunsteling peetkind, laat jou antie nou vir jou ‘n wyse ding vertel: daar is meer terapie in lag as in huil. Niks beter om van al die muisneste en spinnerakke ontslae te raak nie! Ek het die afgelope twee dae glad nie eers gedink aan troues of gastehuise nie. Pure, pure bliss. En die bonus was dat jy ook aangesteek het en nou voel jy ook wonderlik ... Dis amper soveel pret as om na ‘n ruk-en-pluk dokter toe te gaan, net vroliker.
“Ek het laas so ‘n lagaanval gehad toe ek Asterix gelees het! Daar was hierdie een klein prentjie van ‘n Romeinse soldaat se voet met ‘n omkrul groottoon wat so pas uit sy sandaal gefoeter is deur Obelix ... Laat ek liewer nie in detail ingaan nie, ek voel my lagspiere wankel.
“Jy weet mos ek kan nie ou boeke weerstaan
nie, en Sondag by daardie mark waar jy die girls so beloer het deur jou sonbril ... Wel, ek het al vergeet van Oom Schalk Lourens en Abjaters-kop en die Groot Marico, tot ek Mafeking Road daar uit die hoop uitgrawe.”
Daisy hou die boek op dat Plore mooi kan sien – stowwerig en vergeel, maar onmiskenbaar Herman Charles Bosman.
“Dis nou jammer dat jy eintlik besig is om te swot hierdie rukkie wat jy by ons in Johannes-burg kuier, want ek weet dit is perfek vir jou sin vir humor,” sê Daisy vroom. “Ag, en ek weet jy is maar bietjie lui om te lees, maar aangesien dit Engels is, sou dit nou handig wees vir jou boekverslag wat volgende week moet klaar wees...” Slinks. Daisy het nie nodig om veel verder te praat nie; Plore kwyl alreeds oor die boek. “Antie Daise, soos hulle sê in die fl ieks, any friend of yours ... ensovoorts. As hierdie boek jou so laat lag het, moet ek doodeenvoudig lees. Dadelik. Waaroor gaan dit?”
Daisy begin weer gevaarlik giggel. “Water-poort,” sê sy.
“En perskebrandewyn.”Deel 2: Daisy en Plore maak planne om Wa-
terpoort op die “mampoer-map” te sit.
Laerskool Louis Trichardt het Dinsdag reggestaan vir ouers wat deelgeneem het aan die nasionale verkiesing vir skool-beheerliggaamlede.
Hierdie verkiesing speel ‘n
belangrike rol, want dit stel ouers in staat om meer aktief be trokke te raak by hul kinders se opvoeding en ook ‘n sê te hê in die skool se toelatings- en taalbeleid, asook die aan stelling

Round Table Zoutpansberg 66 and the Sout-pansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) invite one and all to Earth Hour 2015.
Earth Hour started in 2007 and is an annual lights-off event to raise awareness about climate change. “It has grown to engage more than 162 countries worldwide, and we in Louis Trichardt have been involved in it since inception,” says Mr Kos Coronaios of the SAC.
Residents are invited to bring their picnic basket and blanket/chairs and join them for an evening of stargazing, live unplugged music and a braai (fire supplied) on Saturday, 28 March from 19:00 at the Soutpansberg As-tronomy Club and Rondebosch Riding School Clubhouse. Prior to Earth Hour, which runs between 20:30 to 21:30, there will be a short presentation on earth’s closest neighbour, the moon, with views from the telescope projected on a big screen. During Earth Hour and after-wards, local musicians will entertain supporters and play unplugged while the telescope will be pointed at the moon, Jupiter and other deep-sky objects. An entrance fee of R20 per person will be charged, while children under 12 can attend for free..

The Chairpersons Association (CA) expressed outrage once more at what they described as the contemptuous way in which Makhado Munici-pality deals with the public.
The allegation relates to an invitation to attend a municipal demarcation public participation meeting, scheduled for 25 February, which the CA received only on 24 February.
In a strongly worded letter to Minister Pravin Gordhan, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the CA lashes out at the municipality. “We had less than 24 hours to re-schedule our programmes in order to attend this meeting. It is very clear from this letter [invite] that the municipal manager is not at all serious about a consultation process, especially where such a very important aspect is to be discussed like the municipal demarcation of this area,” states CA chairman Mr André Naudé in his letter. He added that Minister Gordhan was well aware of the problems being experienced at Malamulele “due to the fact that the town councils and municipalities disregard proper consultation processes and the interest of the public.”
Naudé said he felt obliged to report the matter to the minister, as this type of thing happened repeat-edly. “It does not at all assist that we object to this
sort of crisis management, which we have done on numerous occasions in the past, where the IDP and all other very important meetings were convened at such short notice and on such a crisis-management basis,” Naudé argued. He said that the municipality must know long in advance about the meetings and the impression being created was that they did everything possible in order not to involve the public in participating in the process.
Naudé urged the minister to give urgent atten-tion to the issue as he needed to report back to his members.
“The contempt with which the public is dealt with by the Makhado Municipality is totally un-acceptable,” Naudé stated.
A copy of the letter, of which the minister’s offi ce acknowledged receipt, was also sent to the Makhado Municipality. In response, municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi last week tried to explain away the last-minute notice of the meeting by stating that it was not a deliberate undertaking. “The meeting had to take place after the council session. We had to advance the council sitting to 23 February instead of 26 February, and we had been under the impression that the deadline was on 26 February ... That’s why we had to issue the invites on the following day,” Bobodi explained.

The public is once again encouraged to donate blood to help save the lives of patients in need of blood transfusions.
“Every unit of blood is vital. Once tested and deemed safe for transfusion, it is separated into red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Therefore, a unit of blood can save up to three people’s lives,” says Vanessa Raju, SANBS communications manager. The SANBS needs to provide over 1 million blood products to patients annually, and without the gen-erosity and commitment of their donors, it would be almost impossible.
The SANBS is tasked with collecting, transport-ing, testing and storing blood required for patients daily. For this reason, the SANBS charges a fee for the service and this is billed, depending on the blood product that is required by the patient, togeth-er with all other operating costs. “It is important to note that the SANBS does not sell blood to patients but provides a service that ensures that all govern-

In the event that the SANBS should stop operating, its assets would have to be transferred to an organisa-tion with similar goals and objectives,” says Raju.
Research has shown that the SANBS requires more regular blood donors to meet the country’s demand for this precious resource consistently. Regular donors are encouraged to donate blood every 56 days or a minimum of three times a year. “Regular blood donors are the safest donors because their blood is tested regularly and proven to be safe. They are also more familiar with the SANBS’s education processes,” says Raju.
The SANBS adheres to international standards as well as taking the local prevalence of viruses into consideration. Every unit of blood is individually tested for blood group, HIV, hepatitis B & C, as well as syphilis. “In 2005, the SANBS introduced a more sophisticated test, called the Nucleic Acid Amplifi cation Test (NAT), which has resulted in the quality of the blood we collect and supply to be amongst the safest in the world. There have been no reported cases of HIV transmission through a blood transfusion since the implementation of NAT,” says Raju.

Daar is die dag in ses kategorieë meegeding, naamlik junior seuns (agt tot 12 jaar), senior en junior seuns (13 tot18 jaar), junior meisies (agt tot12 jaar), senior en junior meisies (13 tot 18 jaar) en dan ook senior mans en vroue.
Die eerste vier plekke in elke kategorie het `n medalje ontvang.
Tiny Rademeyer was die eerste junior meisie, gevolg deur Gezelle Koen, Cheyene van Zyl en Shiloh van Zyl. Die eerste junior seun was Wian

Goeie begin vir Triegies se wintersportseisoenLouis Trichardt Hoërskool het die afgelope naweek geseëvier met hul eerste wintersport kragmetings.
Die naweek se sport is voorafgegaan deur ‘n spoggeleentheid Vrydag by die skool, waartydens al die eerstespanne vir rugby, netbal en hokkie aangekondig is.
Saterdag het al die spanne te staan gekom teen Hoërskool Ellisras in ‘n vriendskaplike wedstryd, en hul staal gewys. Triegies het tuisveld voordeel gehad en sommer van meet af vir die besoekende spanne gewys waar Dawid die wortels gegrawe het.
Al die rugbyspanne, behalwe die O/15-span, wen hul wedstryde. Die O/14-span klop Ellisras 31-12, terwyl die O/15’s 30-7 verloor en die O/16’s 14-10
wen. Die tweedespan wen oortuigend 31-5, met die eerstes wat skitterend speel en 37-5 wen.
Triegies se hokkiespanne het Ellisras behoor-lik ‘n loesing gegee en kous oor die kop huistoe gestuur. Hulle wenuitslae, in hakies, het so daarna uitgesien: O/14’s (2-1), O/15’s (5-2), O/16’s (2-0) en die tweedespan (2-1). Die wedstryd van die dag was ongetwyfeld dié van die eerste span, wat Ellisras 6-0 klop.
Die junior en senior sokkerspanne van Triegies wen ook hul wedstryde, onderskeidelik 2-1 en 4-3.
By die netbal was dit gestoei vir punte, en die telbord kon ongelukkig nie Triegies se veggees wys nie; Ellisras wen daar 27-14.
