The 45-year-old Jiwa’s trial commenced in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court last Thursday and took two days to finalise, when his advocate, Mr Marius Bouwer, called three more witnesses to testify in mitigation on his behalf. Jiwa was arrested in February 2011, following a police trap that was set by the South African National Parks’ Environmental Crime Investigation Unit and the police’s special investigation unit, the Hawks. Jiwa subsequently pleaded guilty to the charges relating to the illegal purchasing and possession of rhino horns. During his case, more details surrounding his arrest were revealed. According to Jiwa’s legal team, he approached a park ranger with the intention of buying two rhino horns from him. It would later be revealed that the horns were valued at roughly R10 million. Unfortunately for Jiwa, the ranger immediately informed the police. According to Bouwer, Jiwa had acted out of concern for his family. His seven-year-old son is suffering from a cerebral disease that has left him bed-ridden and dependent. Jiwa’s wife also needed eye surgery at the time of his arrest. Jiwa said he was planning to sell the rhino horns at a big profit to help pay for their medical expenses. Before his arrest, said Bouwer, Jiwa was a strug- gling businessman who had just sold his business in Thohoyandou and was selling cellphone acces- sories. Since his arrest, Bouwer added, Jiwa has been bankrupted and portrayed as a criminal in the media while continuing to be the only breadwinner for his family. Despite this, Bouwer argued, Jiwa continued to be a community builder. All this was presented as reasons why Jiwa should receive mer- cy from the court and not be sent to jail. On Friday Bouwer brought an interlocking application, momentarily bringing all proceedings to a grinding halt. He requested that a part of the money that was seized by the police during Jiwa’s By Isabel Venter arrest be paid back. This was to enable Jiwa to pay his legal bills. During this application it came to light that the police had seized R88 000, which Jiwa had paid to their agent, and a further R80 000 was discovered in his vehicle. A part, R50 000 to be exact, of the R80 000 rightfully belonged to Jiwa’s wife. He had borrowed the money from her shortly before he went to buy the rhino horns from the police agent. She had apparently inherited or received the money from her family. Magistrate Pat Cloete rejected the interlocking application. When the State addressed the court, they asked for eight years’ imprisonment because Jiwa’s activities were far worse than those of a poacher. Despite his plea for correctional supervision, Makhado (Louis Trichardt) resident Yahya Shoeb Jiwa was sentenced to four years’ im-prisonment last Friday.

The 45-year-old Jiwa’s trial commenced in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court last Thursday and took two days to fi nalise, when his advocate, Mr Marius Bouwer, called three more witnesses to testify in mitigation on his behalf.

Jiwa said he was planning to sell the rhino horns at a big profi t to help pay for their medical expenses.

Before his arrest, said Bouwer, Jiwa was a strug-gling businessman who had just sold his business in Thohoyandou and was selling cellphone acces-sories. Since his arrest, Bouwer added, Jiwa has been bankrupted and portrayed as a criminal in the media while continuing to be the only breadwinner for his family. Despite this, Bouwer argued, Jiwa

continued to be a community builder. All this was presented as reasons why Jiwa should receive mer-cy from the court and not be sent to jail.

On Friday Bouwer brought an interlocking application, momentarily bringing all proceedings to a grinding halt. He requested that a part of the money that was seized by the police during Jiwa’s

By Isabel Venter arrest be paid back. He had borrowed the money from her

BUSINESS talkBUSINESS talkBUSINESS talkBUSINESS talkWerda is Toyota’s greenest dealership

By Isabel Venter

Werda Toyota in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has been named the Toyota Environmental Dealer of the Year.

This award was made to Werda Toyota over a fortnight ago for the 2012 fi nancial year. Werda Toyota received the award after a survey was conducted of all the other dealerships in South Africa.

The award, among others, determines which dealer goes the extra mile in their environmental performances and their actual environmental practices. Something that made them stand out, said Werda service manager Mr Charl Venter, was their various recycling projects.

Werda Toyota, though not many are aware of it, is setting the trend when it comes to en-vironmental practices. Not only is their service centre immaculately clean, they are also very conscious of the environmental legacy that they leave behind. For example, Werda Toyota uses a pollution-control product called Super Zorb in all the different facets of their service centre. This product is used to absorb all the harmful products, like oil spills, so that these can be drained later on and sent off to be recycled at the refi nery.

Werda Toyota also recycles all their service parts, such as oil and air fi lters. Metal and paper parts are separated and recycled accordingly. The money that they earn from this recycling is donated to local schools. The outer part of air fi lters is also donated to a community group who turns them into pot plant holders and sells them for an extra income.

The dealership has also recently expanded

and is now also a 2S Hino dealer. Together with three other Toyota dealerships in South Africa, they formed part of a pilot study of Hino SA to ensure Hino services and parts are available. In June, Werda Hino received the award for being the best overall dealer in the pilot phase of the project.

“Thank you to all our employees for their dedication, hard work and effort. Without them, we would not have received these high

honours,” said owner Mr Eddie Schlesinger.

Pictured with the awards Werda Toyota received are, from left to right, Mr Charl Venter (service manager), Mr Johan Victor (parts manager), Ms Jana Coetzee (Hino receptionist), Ms Sandra Booysen (fi nancial manager) and Mr Eddie Schlesinger (dealer principal and owner). Photo supplied.

(Contd from P1)“He created a market for rhino

horns,” said the State. “He never showed any remorse or tried to help the police in telling them whom he intended to sell the horns to and only pleaded guilty because he realised that the case against him was watertight.” The State also argued that if the family was so desperately look-ing for money to cover medical expenses, they could have used their inheritance money instead of for illegal activities. “Today

the State is the voice of the African child who has the right to see a rhino,” concluded the prosecutor.

After magistrate Cloete had finished reading out the sen-tence, a half-stunned Jiwa had to be led to the prisoner holding cells of the magistrate’s court. Magistrate Cloete said that supervision’s effectiveness was almost non-existent in South Africa, due to a lack of proper management. In addition to the direct imprisonment, the whole

amount seized by the police during the arrest was forfeited and to be paid to the anti-poach-ing team of the KNP to aid in the war against rhino poaching.

Jiwa’s legal team did not appeal the magistrate’s verdict. Afterwards, Jiwa got agitated with his team when they tried to explain to him that it would be a fruitless effort to bring such an application. Jiwa’s wife and daughter supported him while he was being booked into prison.

Jiwa gets four year jail sentence

The driver of this vehicle allegedly misjudged a corner on the Vivo-road and his bakkie overturned.

On Monday, this sedan collided with a truck at the crossing of Rissik and Krogh Street.

With this vehicle, a traffic officer rear-ended the bakkie of Mr Riaan Volschenk on Saturday afternoon. The accident happened at the Rissik and Douthwait Street crossing.

By Isabel Venter

Spate of accidents on region’s roads continueMotorists’ negligence is on the increase. This is becoming more and more evident with the con-tinued spate of vehicle accidents in and around Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

The culprits are not just the general public, however. On Saturday afternoon (22nd) a traffic officer caused quite a stir when he rear-ended his vehicle into the bakkie of Mr Riaan Volschenk. The accident occurred on the corner of Douthwait and Rissik Street.

According to Volschenk, the officer seemed to be under the influence of alcohol. “After he had crashed into me, he jumped out his vehicle and threw a couple of empty beer bottles away,” said Volschenk on Monday. “The driver also told me that he worked at the Makhado traffic station”.

After disposing of the empty bottles, the officer then proceeded to phone a friend, who promptly came to take him away. Volschenk was informed that the driver was taken to hospital. Later, how-ever, when one of Volschenk’s friends went with the police in search of the driver, no trace of him could be found at either the Zoutpansberg Private

Hospital or the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.Another man arrived on the accident scene and

informed Volschenk, as well as the police, that he was the owner of the vehicle. This is where the story apparently ended, according to Volschenk. “It bothers me that this whole accident is being covered up,” he had said.

At the time of going to press, the only informa-tion supplied by the Makhado police was that they were investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving against a 38-year-old driver. The driver’s name was not issued.

The police also confirmed that a case of culpa-ble homicide was opened for investigation after a pedestrian died that same evening. According to information supplied by the police, a vehicle trav-elling along the N1 near Makhado Park knocked the pedestrian down. The man was declared dead on the scene and had yet to be identified at the time of going to press.

On Sunday, during two separate incidents, the police arrested two suspects between the ages of 29 and 39 on charges of drunken driving.

On Monday after-noon, two minor acci-dents occurred. In the first accident, a bakkie over turned on the Vivo road just past Ottos Hoogte. According to information available, the driver misjudged the turn and lost con-trol over his vehicle. During rush hour later that afternoon, a sedan and truck collided with each other at the Krogh and Rissik Street inter-section.

The Makhado SAPS wel-comed Brig Alex Seopa into their corps as the new cluster commander.

Brig Seopa met with various media institutions in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) this Tuesday. During the meeting, he gave a slight glimpse of all his plans to curb crime in the cluster. Some of the stations that fall under the Makhado cluster include, among others, Waterval, Ban-delierkop, Tshitale and Levubu.

Seopa joined the police force in 1979 and served at different stations as station or cluster commander. In 1991, he became the first black station command-er of the Polokwane SAPS. He was also the station command-er of Gilead, Motetema and Sekhukhune and the deputy area commissioner of the Capricorn district.

Seopa, who reported for duty a week ago, has already started

strategizing. He also said that the Makhado police seemed to be working hard, but that there was room for improvement. “Lazy or corrupt policemen will be dealt with internally,” he said. Seopa further added that he had an open-door policy when it came to complaints, and through this he wanted to establish and maintain a lasting relationship with the community that he served. “By cleaning house, we will gain the community’s trust and so change the picture.”

“Crime cannot be dealt with in isolation” – is another motto of Seopa’s. Some future plans include the incorporation of various community anti-crime forums, such as the pastors’ forum and the Soutpansberg Town Watch, as well as the establishment of neighbourhood watch committees and a “tek-kie” squad.

This, says Seopa, will go

a long way in curbing crimes such as housebreaking, domes-tic violence and drug-related crimes. Furthermore, Seopa acknowledged the alarming increase in other violent crimes such as rape in the area, and gave his assurance that these would be reduced. “We are con-stantly working on strategies to address the crimes in the area,” said Seopa.

A mysterious fire gutted a shopping complex in Thohoyandou, causing millions of rand in damages.

The fire, which completely destroyed five shops and their contents in a complex next to the main road, is said to have started around 19:00 on Satur-day. The cause of the fire is still a mystery.

Billowing smoke and consuming flames could be seen kilometres away from Thohoyandou. News of the fire spread like the fire itself as those at the scene informed friends through the social networks.

Within a short time, the whole complex was swarming with onlookers, while the fire department from the Vhembe District municipality battled to control the fire. At some of the shops they had to break down the doors as the owners were not present.

During the commotion, thugs who took advan-tage of the situation had a field day, with some taking whatever they could lay their hands on from the shops. It was only the arrival of the police that saved the day and stopped the looters, who were struggling to steal refrigerators, microwave ovens

and other appliances from the scene.Eyewitness David Mphephu, a security guard

who works at the adjacent building, said he smelt something and saw thick smoke coming from a spares shop in the complex. “I was doing my regu-lar rounds around the building where I work when I saw this black smoke coming out of the shop. From where I was, I could see that the shop was on fire, and I immediately raised the alarm and the police and the fire department arrived,” he said.

This is not the first devastating fire in Thohoy-andou in recent years. In 2006, Shoprite suffered a severe blow when one of its branches in Thohoyan-dou was completely razed by a raging fire, causing millions of rand in damage. In 2008, another major fire completely gutted the Nando’s outlet in Tho-hoyandou. A wholesale and warehouse were also damaged extensively during a fire in town, where millions of rands in stock was lost a few years ago.

The spokesperson of the Thohoyandou police, Maj Mashudu Malelo, confirmed that they are investigating a case of arson.

The man who blew the whistle, security guard David Mphephu, explains how he spotted the fire.

The dedicated complaint hotline on the AfriFo-rum website is in full swing.

“The hotline is working. Many problems are solved. I believe we have turned a corner. For the past two weeks, water has been consistently run-ning, apart from isolated incidents. I am proud of Vhembe and their communication guy, Mr Moses Shibambu, who diligently noted the complaints and followed up,” said AfriForum Louis Trichardt chairperson Wally Schultz on 24 June.

One of the complaints on the hotline was that of Ms Petro van Rooyen who reported a leaking municipal tap in Snyman Street on 8 June. “Thank you, my tap is not leaking anymore!” Van Rooyen wrote on Monday, to which Shibambu replied “Thanks Petro, the flow of water seems to be back to normal but we are still monitoring very closely.”

“To get home from work and still have wa-ter ... This is heavenly!” Ms Chantel Smith com-mented on a social network on 7 June.

Mr Lampie Schoeman reported a stream of water in Douthwait Street between Jeppe and Vorster Streets on Monday and said that the result would be an empty Bergh Street reservoir, a complaint that still had to be followed up by the time of going to press. The Zoutpansberger asked Schoeman if he deemed the water supply in town to have improved.

“I describe water supply as normal when there is always water when you open your tap. That is how Judge Maumela described it during the recent court session. I would even describe the water supply as having improved when there is water for five or six months consistently and not five days and then a break in continuous supply,” said Schoeman, who attended the court sessions as local AfriForum

deputy chairperson. Schoeman said that a water services plan, with a monitored maintenance plan and a contingency plan, was necessary.

Following the more consistent water flow, sewage has been erupting in many places all over town. “The flowing water gives rise to sewerage problems. It can be likened to temporary explosions as the water is clearing the sewage out. I have driven around town to enough places … and have seen all the stuff and plastic bags that come out of the blocked sewerage...” said Schultz and added that the pump station in the industrial area near the breweries was working again.

The hotline is also used for sewerage complaints. Mr Jerry Cloete reported a sewage spill on behalf

of his neighbours in Wolmarans Street. “The sewage has pushed up at the main line and is al-most knee deep at some places. This has been three months and we are dying of the smell…” Cloete wrote on 6 June.

Four days later, he pasted a comment to express his gratitude that a crew was busy working on the problem. “Just one message on this page and things are on the roll…” Cloete said.

In the meantime, the Vhembe municipal man-ager has around 60 more working days to supply consistent water between 04:00 and 10:00 and 16:00 and 20:00 as ordered by Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela of the Gauteng North High Court on 16 May. After the 90 days (from 16 May), a con-tempt-of-court order with a possible jail sentence could be given against the municipal manager in person. The Zoutpansberger asked Schultz whether he thought that these dire consequences could be averted. “Let’s not tempt fate by saying that now,” Schultz said.

AfriForum’s complaint hotline pays dividends

“I believe we have turned a corner. For the past two weeks,

water has been consistently running, apart from isolated

incidents”

The dedicated complaint hotline on the AfriForum website is in full swing. “The hotline is working. Many problems are solved. I believe we have turned a corner... ” said AfriForum Louis Trichardt chairperson Wally Schultz on 24 June.

Ms Munangwa Mugwena (right), a lecturer at the Lephalale FET College, visited the Zoutnet offices during the past week to gain first-hand experience on news gathering and producing as part of the college´s Lecturer Workplace Experience programme. Discussing newspaper lay-out with Mugwena are Messrs Wikus Lee (left), editor of Limpopo Mirror and Andries van Zyl (centre), news editor of the Zoutpansberger.

The Zoutpansberg Private Hos pital in Makhado (Louis Tri chardt) has embarked on an ambi-tious project to celebrate Mandela Day on 18 July this year.

They plan to provide 10 free ope rations to 10 eye patients in need of urgent eye surgery. Eight of the 10 patients, all from different racial and cultural backgrounds, have already been identified.

These operations will be performed free of charge by two eye surgeons, while the services of the anaesthetist are also free. The hospital itself will supply the theatre and theatre personnel at no cost.

A major stumbling block at this stage, howev-er, is the cost of the theatre packs needed for the operations. Due to the specialized nature of these packs, which include, among others, the eye lens-es, surgical tools and consumables needed for the operations, it is unlikely that the hospital will get these packs sponsored. The packs cost R10000 each on average.

With regard to their Mandela Day project, 10 packs need to be purchased beforehand at a cost of

R100 000. This is where residents and businesses can make a difference in the spirit of Mandela Day.

Persons whishing to contribute financially to the project do not necessarily have to donate the whole of R10 000. “

You can donate any amount. We’ll add all the donations and purchase the packs from the total amount,” says Ms Anneke Stroebel of the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital. She adds that the public is also welcome to support the project by sponsoring their services, such as helping out in providing transport for the patients to and from the hospital. A hospitality tent is also envisaged where family members can wait, and an hotel has already indicated that it will be providing some free snacks for both the patients and their family.

“We would really appreciate your support of this project,” says Stroebel.

For more information, phone Stroebel at Tel 015 516 0720 extension 6 or 083 326 6073.

Foto verskaf.

Relentlessly he fends for himself, with only a wheelchair, his blanket and a will to live.

Readers alerted the Zoutpansberger to the plight of a man literally living on the narrow island be-tween the two lanes of Hospital Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Mr Relent Ndlovu, around 40 years of age, does not have the use of his legs. They have been burnt at “dustbins”, which seems to indicate the dumping site outside of Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Relent has strong arms and he propels his wheelchair up the hill to his “home” of the past two to three months, almost in front of the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.

With patience, the Sotho-speaking Relent po-litely answers the barrage of questions, as much as his Afrikaans and English allow him. On his lap is his bundle of wood, his warmth for the evenings. From his answers a probable picture of his life slowly emerges.

In the morning when the sun awakens him, Re-lent gets onto his wheelchair and takes on the “far” road to the dumping site, in search of food. He is also seen at the taxi ranks. Only when it’s dark does he return from his “day’s work” and wraps himself in his blanket. Later, he is seen sleeping on top of his worn-out blanket with the South African fl ag on it, covered by a new blue blanket. A grey blanket is pitched on a tree branch and blue slippers lie on the ground, possibly donated by a kind Samaritan.

He could be around 40 years of age, though he no longer has an ID document, which he supposes could be with his long-lost relatives in Pieter-maritzburg ... Relent indicates that he was born in Mudimeli in Nzhelele. There were times that he

lived in the hospital, perhaps coinciding with the time he burnt his legs. Last year, his hands needed treatment and he was admitted. Subsequent to a confl ict situation he was, however, asked to leave the hospital premises. He apparently also stayed opposite Safari Motors in the new extension, but due to the danger of crime there he chose a more “secure” spot. He washes in puddles of water near Bridge Auto, although that seems to happen more when the weather is warm. He uses the bush when he needs a toilet.

Relent realizes that he cannot inhabit his “secure” spot forever and is willing to go if he can fi nd a place of shelter. The challenge in town is that, although attention is being given in Tshikota to a shelter for people under 18, there is no shelter for disabled or even for able-bodied homeless adults.

“In my opinion it is very shameful. When it is raining, it is too cold. His relatives are not near,” said Mr Ruben Masindi, a nearby security guard. “I hope his relatives hear of this article and maybe come to fetch him,” said another guard.

“I would be horrifi ed if I drove past one morning, only to fi nd a body frozen to death. It is not right that someone should live on an island in the street,” said Ms Pat Menne, who uses the road frequently.

Ms Diane Bannatyne, who often does charity work through different organisations, referred to another homeless wheelchair owner who is known for “reckless” driving. “Relent should not be con-fused with him. There is defi nitely more than one in town. It breaks my heart that there is no shelter for these people,” Bannatyne said.

Relent is fending for himself relentlessly

Relentlessly he fends for himself. He has his wheelchair, his blanket and his will to live. Readers alerted the Zoutpansberger to the plight of a man literally living on the narrow island between the two lanes of a street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

The “island man” was seen sleeping on top of his worn-out blanket and covered by a new blue blanket. There are still good Samaritans! The town, however, needs a more permanent solution to the problem of homeless, disabled adults.

Gevind

082 928 4473.

Australian mining company Coal of Africa Lim-ited (CoAL) has indicated that there is money to be made with reference to their Makhado project.

CoAL published the results of Makhado’s fea-sibility study last Wednesday (19th). According

By Isabel Venter

Money to be made at Makhado, says CoAL

to the company, the mine will yield “robust eco-nomic returns” and, in turn, provide a platform to turn CoAL into a global coking and thermal-coal producer.

But could it be a case of CoAL’s counting their chickens before they’ve hatched?

In the very same report, the mining company admits that they are still waiting for their mining right and water-use licence from the Department of Mineral Resources and Water Affairs respectively.

If CoAL had their way, the planned open-cast Makhado mine would produce 2.3 million metric tonnes of coking coal per year and 3.2 million tonnes of thermal coal, from the end of 2016. The possibility exists that the mine could later be expanded into an underground mine. CoAL has already started to look for the R4 billion that they will need to build Makhado, which is expected to have a 16-year life span. In anticipation of their mining operations, CoAL has also already designed a processing plant to handle all the coal that will be mined.

CoAL chairman David Brown expressed his delight with the outcome of the study. “This high-quality hard coking coal project will not only deliver robust economic returns but also contribute meaningfully to the economic development of the Limpopo Province in South Africa,” said Brown, adding that the “Makhado project represents the future of the company and is the first step in the development of a major 8 billion-tonne resource across our Soutpansberg coal field”.

Building around their vision, CoAL said that they intended to use borehole water for the construction phase of the mine. This phase will be supplemented by an additional 4.6 million litres of water per day from the Nzhelele Dam. This is, however, subject to their receiving their water-use licence.

CoAL had already, in December of last year, signed an agreement with a collection of farmers to buy the excess of their water-use rights that they have from the Nzhelele Dam.

Liezl Craig, a former student of Louis Trichardt High School, obtained a Master’s degree of philosophy in integrated water management from the South African Campus of the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The graduation ceremony took place at Monash SA in Roodepoort in February. Liezl received a bursary from the International Water Centre in Australia for her Master’s degree. For her Bachelor’s degree, Liezl studied BSc landscape architecture at the University of Pretoria. She is currently lecturing in environmental science at UNISA. Photo supplied.

“South Africa is seen by many, particularly by those who are less fortunate and who have been forced to flee their countries of origin, as a shining beacon of hope.”

These were the words of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr Tibias Hlambelo, during a Refugees Day celebration, organised by the Jesuit Refugee Service at Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last Saturday.

“We have embarked on a programme of in-forming SAPS officials on issues of inter-country relations, particularly where the rights and hu-man dignity of refugees and asylum seekers are concerned,” said Hlambelo. He added that they had started in Musina, “where crimes against refugees are rife”.

He mentioned that if the members of the SAPS understood their duties, there would be no unfair

arrests and abuse of refugees in the area.Jesuit Refugee Service project manager Ms

Bertha Chiguvare said that more than 45 million people around the world were forced to flee their homes, due to war or persecution. “Let’s continue to support our brothers and sisters from other parts of the world in upholding the spirit of ubuntu, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence in our communities.” She said people needed to pray and fast to avoid bitterness and confusion and appealed to the youth not to allow themselves to be used to intimidate and attack refugees violently. She called for political and religious tolerance to sustain the peace and security that the local community has enjoyed for years.

Cllr Gideon Tshavhuyo called on people to “honour refugees and recognise the richness and diversity they bring to our society”.

Young leaders of Champions Combined Academy outside Makhado (Louis Trichardt) decided to make a difference and change the lives of the less privileged.

The Change-A-Life project was born at the beginning of this year and action was taken. The project is in line with Champions’ mission of developing every student into a “visionary leader that will impact and change the world to the glory of God.”

“We identified the Tonda Lushaka drop-in centre in Magau near Madombidzha. We had several outreaches bringing blan-kets, food and clothes, after which the children shared the Gospel. The teachers go with in a supervisory role, but the initiative is the children’s,” said the principal of Champions Combined Academy, Ms Sonja Prinsloo.

One such outreach occurred on 12 June when the children had a fundraiser and bought a blanket for each child at the drop-in centre. They had bought 170 blankets, only to find that there were 190 children. When they returned on a later date with more blankets, the number had increased again!

“The need is so enormous,” said Prinsloo. She explained that a drop-in centre is a non-profit organization that accommodates vulnerable children, children at risk and orphans, for the after-noon, providing them with a meal and a safe place to do their

homework. The ages of the children range from very young (about four) to 17/18.

At the beginning of the project, the children held fundraisers and bought non-perishable food to deliver. Later, they came across the idea of delivering the food a few days before their visit and requesting that the food be prepared on the day of the visit. Their express purpose with the blankets was that every child should have something warm before the winter school holidays. Even children who are not reflected in the books of the school received blankets.

“The joy over a blanket was touching. There are so many neglected children and one has to be very sensitive. There are so many children in the area whose most basic needs are probably not even met. The work that Tonda Lushaka does is phenomenal,” said Pastor Francois Strydom, a board member of Champions Combined Academy. The academy falls under the spiritual auspices of Shammah Ministries, where Pastor Strydom is the senior pastor.

The Change-A-Life project further entails that each leader from Grade 7 to Grade 9 of Champions will “adopt” a friend at Tonda Lushaka and take an interest in the friend’s life and remember the friend’s birthday.

As part of their Change-A-Life project, young leaders of Champions Combined Academy of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) brought blankets for the children of the Tonda Lushaka drop-in centre in Magau on 12 June. Pictured is a group of them with their blankets. Photo supplied.

Blouberg munisipale gebied val.“Dit wil voorkom of Makhado Munisipali-

Psalm 51:1-7

Ek is seker almal wat hier lees se vingers was al gevlek deur moer-

beie.

Links staan Danie Jooste.

Currently serving in the British Armed Forces (BAF), Neil Purdon from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) participated in the Heroes Cycle Ride ride from Edinburgh to London in the United Kingdom on 2 June in support of the Help for Heroes charity. The charity serves wounded BAF servicemen and their families. The event was brought home to many Londoners by the recent murder of a serviceman, Drummer Lee Rigby, on 22 May by Islamic fundamentalists whilst he was wearing a Help for Heroes T-shirt. In typical Saffa spirit, Neil has “Vasbyt” written on his arm (literally meaning to ‘grin and bear it’ and persevere), a state of mind all who have served in a defence force can remember well. Employee: Well sir, as you know, I have been an employ-ee of this prestigious fi rm for over ten years.

Boss: Yes.Employee: I won’t beat

around the bush. Sir, I would like a raise. I currently have four companies after me and so I decided to talk to you fi rst.

Boss: A raise? I would love to give you a raise, but this is just not the right time.

Employee: I understand your position, and I know that the current economic downturn has had a negative impact on sales, but you must also take into consideration my hard work, pro- activeness and loyalty to this company for over a decade.

Boss: Taking into account these factors, and considering I don’t want to start a brain drain, I’m willing to offer you a ten percent raise and an extra fi ve days of vacation time. How does that sound?

Employee: Great! It’s a deal! Thank you, sir!

Boss: Before you go, just out of curiosity, what companies were after you?

Employee: Oh, Truworths, Home Choice, Edgars and the bank offering me a credit card.
