Deacon Byron’s Homily for the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gloom, despair and agony on me. Deep dark depression, excessive misery.
If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all. Gloom, despair and agony on me.
Thismaysoundfamiliar.It’sfromthetelevisionshowHeeHaw,whichairedfrom1969to1997.Isthisyourthemesong???AsFatherDavidhasmentionedoverthepastfewweekseverythingnowisanewsalert,notaheadline.Wearekeptin“crisismode.”Thegovernmentisalsoguiltyofkeepingusinaheightenedstateofcrisis.Yes,weneedtobeawareofterrorism,andpandemicbutthegovernmentdoesnothavetherighttousethesethreatstofrightenusintosubmittingtothelatestitemonitspoliticalagenda.Nordoestheoppositiontothegovernmenthavetherighttomakepeoplefearthattheyarelivinginatotalitarianstateandthattheysoonwillhavealltheirrightsremoved.WeAmericansareneuroticenoughonourown.Wedon’tneedthegovernment,theoppositiontothegovernment,orthemediaintensifyingourparanoia. Wedon’tneedtheirhelp.Wehavesomerealfearstoconsider.Theprotectionofourchildrenfromthenegativeaspectsofoursociety,orfromthosewhopreyontheweakiscertainlyavalidfear.Concernaboutprovidingforthefutureofourfamiliesisalsovalid.Manyofusareconcernedaboutourhealthandthehealthofourlovedonesbecausewereceivedailyremindersthatlifeisfragileandpeopledodiesuddenly,at leastsoonerthantheyexpected.Thenagain,everyonediessoonerthanheorshewouldexpect. Howshouldwe,asChristians,dealwithstress,realorimposedonusbyothers?Today’sGospel,fromthetenthchapterofMatthew,tellsustotrustinGod,andbepeopleoffaith.Itcontainsthebeautifulpassageaboutsparrows: “Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” WeareobligatedtoseethelivingChristineverypersonwemeetorreadaboutorseeonTV—evenannoyingpeoplewemayrunintothissummeronvacation.Andyetweknowthatwesimplydon’tlikesomeofthosepeople,nordosomeofthemlikeus.ButGoddoesn’tcallustolikethem.GodcallsustolovethemandtorememberthatGodcountseveryhairontheirheadsandthatalthoughGodvaluessparrows,asJesustellsHisfollowers,“you are of more value than many sparrows.” WhatwoulditlooklikeifwetookJesusseriouslyaboutlovingpeoplebecauseGodbelievesthey’reofinfinitevalue?Wouldn’twelistentopeoplebetterthansomeofusdonow?Andisn’tlisteningtopeopleasignofrespect?Andisn’trespectingsomeoneawayoflovingthem? Wouldn’twepaymoreattentiontohowpeoplearewounded,wherethey’rehurting,whatneedstheyhavethatwemightsupply?Thisdoesn’tmeanmakingpeopledependentonusforwhattheycanprovideforthemselves.Rather,itmeansbeingsensitivetowhat’skeepingpeoplefromlivingflourishinglives,anditmeanslookingforwaystorespondtothemindividually.Sometimesit’swhole systems thatblockpeople fromflourishing, andunlesswefix those systems,we cannot expect individuals toovercomeobstaclesbythemselves.That’swhywemustbeawareofhowoursystemsof,say,education,employmentandcriminaljusticearefunctioning,sothosesystemsdon’tcrushindividualswhoareGod’schildren,whoareofunimaginableworthinGod’seyes,whoareoursiblings.Toloveindividualssometimesrequiresaholisticpictureofsystemsthatoftenneedlesslylimittheboundariesoftheirlives. Mybrothersandsistersyoucanmake“gloomanddespair”yourthemesongoryoucansingthesongofpraisebecauseyouareforgiven.Singthesongofpraisebecauseyouhaveseenthelight;abetterway.Singthesongofpraisebecauseyouareloved.SingthesongofpraisefromtherooftopstoletothersknowthattheyarelovedbyGodandareworthmorethanmanysparrows.
