14TH OF JULY 2019
FIFTEEN SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C
There are some pieces of music, which people identify after two or even one chord. For instance, the Fifth Symphony of Beethoven, we recognise after its first two chords.
Many Gospel stories are like the Fifth Symphony; we recognise them straight after a few words. Today’s Gospel belongs to one of these stories: “A man was going from Jerusalem to Jericho”, after these words we know at once that this story will be about “the good Samaritan.”
That acquaintance with well-known stories sometimes works against us. Knowing the story, we might switch ourselves off because we know the end.
Well, I am not sure whether the end of this particular story has its end in the
Gospel.
The last words “Go and do likewise.” Jesus addresses not only to the lawyer but also to us who came to St. Joseph’s, Guardian Angels or Mary Immaculate today.
In the introduction to the story of the Good Samaritan, we find a question a very important one. “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” a lawyer asked Jesus.
Answering this question, Jesus referred him to the Jewish Law. The lawyer knew well which passage to quote. “You shall know the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.”
However, that passage was a little bit uncomfortable because, at the end, the love of neighbour was mentioned. The love of God also required the love of neighbour.

Turn our worship into witness in the sacrament of life. Send us forth to love and serve You, bringing peace where there is strife.
Give us, Christ, Your great compassion to forgive as You forgave. May we still behold Your image in the world You died to save. Words © 1989 Hope Publishing Company,

Take of my bread and eat, drink my new wine. Take of my life and live, branch of my vine. Let me befriend you now, eat, take your fill. Don’t be afraid to dream. Love has its will. Take up your burden now, walk ‘til you find just what the journey means,
walk while there’s time. Food for the journey
will answer your need. Don’t be afraid to walk. Love, my love will lead. Take of my bread and eat, drink my new wine. Be a sweet nourishment to good friends of mine.
