SUNDAY REFLECTION

Come to Me, all you who labor and are

burdened, and I will give you rest.”

One of the most recent holy people

recommended for sanctity in this country is

Sister Thea Bowman FSPA, of Canton,

Mississippi. Her rich coloratura soprano

voice moved the whole conference of

solemn American Bishops to a rousing “We

Shall Overcome” finale at their 1989 national

conference. In the midst of our current

struggles against racism, in this country’s

search to make right the inequalities of rich

and poor, elderly and virus-strapped-

families, Sister Thea’s life is worth

attention. One of her victorious cries was

that she would not die through the cancer

that racked her, but she would live every

day of her life and then in death, she would

go “home, like a shooting star.” YouTube

contains some vivid tributes and images of

this “Servant of God.”

The prophet Zachariah speaks today of a

king who will come to bring peace, whose

reign will stretch “from sea to shining

sea.” His kingdom will be one where

violence and those who use violent means

will be banished. The prophet refers to this

leader as one of meekness, justice and

peace. Jesus Himself marked meekness as

one of the Beatitudes of His Kingdom, and

with His example to teach us, it is time to

see what strength there is in the life style of

the meek. Those who know themselves

well enough to value meekness, know that

self -discipline and self-respect are the

doors that support them, especially at times

when their actions are threatened by stress

and confusion. The meek know who they

are, and what is important in their dealings

with others. The meek posses, as Jesus

described, the earth where they walk, and

they need no weapons to brandish for

protection.

Today’s Scriptures urge that we not be

“debtors” to the flesh, to live according to

the limits of the flesh. Surely, when the

walls of the limits of social distancing begin

to close in on family living or summer

vacationing, we surely need the “Spirit that

dwells in us” to keep wearing a mask,

washing our hands often, keeping the

distance between ourselves and others.

Would these be practices of meekness?

Without pushing the limits of meaning,

these could well be putting to death the

deeds of the body which in our times is

surrounded by this contagion we are slow

to identify. To take up the yoke of the Lord’s

Cross is life-real for us who still grow weary

and heavily burdened.

Without straining too much we can turn to

the Scriptures our Liturgy gives. Faith

brings us to see new ways to “live every day

of our lives”, as Sister Thea described. Great

saints have gone before us and great saints

surround us now; Jesus reveals God Father

now, as surely as He did for His disciples,

His “Little ones.” His Gospel is for us.

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me

for I am meek and humble heart; you will

find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy

and My burden is light.”
