Pastor’s Message

July 5, 2020

Dear Friends in Christ:

I would presume many of you have been waiting anx-iously and wondering who your new pastor would be. My name is Fr. Lawrence W. Jozwiak (pronounced Jahz-wick— only 2 syllables). I was born and grew up in Hou-ston inside the 610 loop, being the youngest of 3 sons. I am 62½ years old. My middle brother is 68 and lives with his family in the Fairfield subdivision. My oldest brother is 73 and lives in Atascocita area with his family. I have 2 adult nephews & 2 adult nieces, and 7 great nephews & 1 great niece.

My parents come from very large families. My father was 1 of 14 children—all deceased. If my father were living, he would be 101 years old. My mother was 1 of 9 children—only 3 are still living. My mother is 94 years old and lives at St. Dominic Village near the Medical Cen-ter. Both of my parents grew up in the Chappell Hill / Brenham area, growing up as very poor farmers, without the benefit of much formal education, speaking Polish as their 1st language and learning English from the religious sisters in Catholic elementary school.

My home parish was St. Rose of Lima Church in Gar-den Oaks. My 2 brothers and I went to the elementary school at St. Rose, and all 3 graduated from St. Pius X High School. I attended my 1st two college years at the University of Houston main campus and then transferred and graduated from Texas A&M University (class of 80) with a degree in Accounting and then becoming a CPA. I worked for 2 years before entering St. Mary Seminary. I received a Master’s of Divinity from the University of St. Thomas in 1987, served my internship / diaconate at Prince of Peace Church and was ordained a priest on May 23, 1987—the birthday of my father who died in 1982. My 1st two years of priesthood were at St. Mary Magda-lene Church in Humble, serving with Msgr. Adam McClosky who then became your pastor (1989-1999). Then I studied and received a graduate degree in Canon Law (J.C.L.) from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. When I returned to Houston, I served 1991-1997 as the parochial vicar at the Co-Cathedral with

part time ministry in the Tribunal Office. I was ap-pointed full time as the Judicial Vicar (head) of the Tribu-nal Office in 1997 and served in that role until the end of 2016. Since 2001 until the present in the spring semester, I have been teaching canon law at the Graduate School of Theology for the University of St. Thomas at St. Mary Seminary. I served as a Chaplain to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at the Villa de Matel 2001-2008. For the last 12 years, I was the Pastor / Rector of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

For several months, I discerned what God was asking of me, discussing with my present & past spiritual direc-tors, my priest mentor & my close priest friends. Though I love the Co-Cathedral, it became evident through prayerful reflection that God was asking me to begin a new chapter in serving His people. The Cardinal was very pleased with my role at the Co-Cathedral and was willing to allow me to continue. But he accepted my decision to leave.

In all honesty, St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish was a com-plete surprise. I drew a blank when people asked me what kind of parish I wanted if I were to change. Msgr. Adam McClosky, my priest friend/mentor & my 1st pastor, went to the Holy Land in March. He took with him the prayer intention that God would provide me another good parish. When this pastor-ship became available unexpectedly after his trip, I heard so many positive realities that attracted me instantly to you. I applied for the parish, and the Cardinal approved.

I am excited to be here to become part of this parish! I intend to the best of my ability, being open to God’s grac-es, to be faithful to preaching the Gospel, to the beauty & reverence of the Eucharist and to teach the beauty of our Catholic faith, my 3 great passions. I want to get to know you, listen to you, observe and work together to build on the good foundation that exists here, continuing to wel-come all people. Let us pray that we give our best at wor-ship, work and play for God’s glory. Pray for me, as I will pray for you.

Let us give thanks for the last 6 years for Fr. John Kha Tran’s servant leadership. Let us pray for him as he transi-tions to his new parish of Vietnamese Martyrs. Let us pray for Fr. Michael & Fr. Ignatius in their new assignments.

St. Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us!

Fr. Lawrence W. Jozwiak Pastor

SHARE THE BURDEN “Come to me, all you who labor and are bur-dened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). These words of our Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Connecting these two messages might help us on our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suf-fering and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone, for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us remember that we can share that burden with our Christian sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

FAMILY LIFE MINISTRIES

Help me, dear Lord, to welcome all of the joyful hap-penings that you have seen fit to lay before me this day. May I appreciate the gifts that you will give to me and may I even if only in some small way, serve as a gift to someone else today. Amen. Terence Hegarty

That, in gratitude for all that God has given us, we joyfully return a portion of His gifts to help build His kingdom of earth. “For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” - Mat-thew 11:30 When we think of being good stewards, we may think that God is asking too much of us when He calls us to generously share our time, talent and treasure. However, we must remember that we are not “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. All He is asking is that we give back a small portion, in gratitude, of what He has already given to us.

Mary, friend and mother to all, through your Son, God has found a way to unite himself to every human being, called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other. We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking for-giveness for the times when we have failed to love and respect one another. We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to overcome the evil of racism and to build a just society. We ask for your help in following your Son, so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts but will be re-placed with a love that respects the dignity of each person. Mother of the Church, the Spirit of your Son Jesus warms our hearts: pray for us. Amen. United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propositioned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attend-ing priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, un-repentant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg As-sunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
