14th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

Two things are striking in this Sunday’s readings. First, St Paul’s saying in the Letter to the Galatians that he boasts “only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal 6:14), for only in His cross do we find salvation and become a new creation. We were marked with this precious sign at Baptism and became Christ’s own. May we always remember that, like the Apostle, we also “bear the marks of Jesus in [our] body” (Gal 6:17).

Jesus sends out the seventy-two disciples saying: “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest” (Lk 10:2). Without priests we would not be able to celebrate the sacraments. However, as Pope Benedict XVI reminded us in his Angelus address of July 8, 2007, “the mission was not exclusive to the Twelve Apostles, but extended also to the other disciples.” As we pray for more priestly vocations, let us remember, as Pope Benedict tells us, that we “are missionaries of Christ, called to prepare the way for him with words and with the witness of [our] lives.” God bless you!

Fr.

Catholic Devotions: The Brown Scapular “Whosoever dies clothed in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.”

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to St. Simon Stock, 1251

A SCAPULAR is a sign of commitment to the contemplative life. [Originally] a large overgarment that protected the monk’s tunic while he was working, the word scapular comes from the Latin word for shoulder, scapula.

Scapulars are cloth items usually worn over the shoulders; and, like medals, they come in many varieties. [But the best known is] the brown scapular. [When “invested” with it] using prayers approved for that purpose, [one] is enrolled in the Carmelite order [which] traces its origins back to the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Elisha.

The Carmelite order has always cultivated a particular and intense devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and it is her image that usually appears on the brown scapular. It’s said that, in the thirteenth century, she appeared to a Carmelite named St. Simon Stock…, and she told him that those who died “clothed in this habit will never suffer eternal fire.”

Pope John Paul II said that the scapular is powerful precisely because it is a “habit” in every sense of the word, both a uniform and a pattern of good belief and good behavior. Catholics [are] permitted to wear a scapular medal in place of a cloth scapular, and many people do. The scapular medal bears the image of Jesus’ Sacred Heart on one side, and the image of Mary on the other.

Holy Lives /Vidas Santas VENERABLE MARÍA EUFRASIA IACONIS (1867-1916) — Sofia

Iaconis was born in Italy in 1867. At age 19, she entered the Sisters of Charity Daughters of the Immaculate, order founded by her aunt, Mother María Fabiano. It was here that she answered the call to tend to Italian migrants in Argentina, especially at the Italian Hospital in Buenos Aires, where she arrived in 1893. After working in other hospitals, the sisters founded their first school in 1897.

The order was suppressed in 1901, but with the support of the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Mother Eufrasia founded a new religious family, Daughters of the Immaculate Conception, which tended schools, homes and hospitals. Soon it spread outside Argentina, arriving in Milan in 1912.

Mother Eufrasia died in Buenos Aires in 1916. She was part of a generation of religious sisters who responded to the needs of their time and carried out great works for Argentina and for the whole world.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa

Catechesis on the Our Father, March 6, 2019

After praying for the sanctification of his name, the

believer expresses the desire that His Kingdom may

come soon. This desire poured forth, so to speak,

from the very heart of Christ who began preaching in

Galilee by proclaiming: “The time is fulfilled, and the

kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the

gospel”, (Mk 1:15)…. The signs of the coming of this

Kingdom are multiple, all of them positive….“Thy kingdom come”,

Christians persistently repeat when they pray the “Our Father”. Jesus

has come; but the world is still marked by sin, inhabited by many

people who suffer, by people who do not want to reconcile and do not

forgive, by war and many forms of exploitation.

«¡Venga a nosotros tu Reino!», repite

DID YOU KNOW?

SITTING makes us ready for listening and meditation, so the congregation sits for the pre-Gospel readings, the

homily, the Presentation of the Gifts, and may also sit for

the period of meditation following Communion.
