XIV Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

(Deacon Rob’s Reflection continues inside)

REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY

God is sending us a message today in our liturgy that we

would be wise to acknowledge and heed. In today’s

liturgy, God reveals His technique in conveying important

messages to the people with whom He has an everlasting

covenant. He can be subtle and merciful, or direct and

demanding. No matter which way He chooses, God will

communicate; however, we still have to listen. Listening is

the other half of communication that people often find

difficult. Why? We tend to allow our desires and thoughts

to hinder clear reception of the message – especially if

truth is involved and we prefer the lie.

In the first reading from the Book of Ezekiel, God saw a

nation out of control. The people He had chosen for His

own have decided to live their lives the way they wanted.

Using their God-given talents, they had come to the point

that they could justify anything they did. They wanted ....

All are welcome

at St. Patrick Catholic Church

Todos son bienvenidos en la

MEMORIAL MASS FOR MIKE & SHARON TEBB

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 at 10 AM

Mike & Sharon were long-time parishioners and each served

in a variety of roles within the parish. They had a special

affinity for our St.Patrick Day Dinner & Auction. Due to CoVid

restrictions, their funeral services were limited to family. Now

is our time to honor this special Catholic couple.

Their family asks that - if you are planning to come to the

memorial—you let the parish office know how many are

coming from your family.

. . . be prosperous and secure so they looked around them and began to imitate their neighbors. They lost faith in Covenant with God and placed it in their neighbors who were prosperous. They desired immedi-ate gratification and did not want to sacrifice and earn it. Breaking their oath and covenant with God, the people reaped their reward and the country was destroyed. They came to know that Ezekiel was indeed a true prophet of God. His message was truth and they had listened to lies. In the second reading from Paul to the Corinthians, Paul reveals that God has allowed a “thorn in the flesh” to afflict him. Paul rejoices at this because the “curse” has caused him to remain humble and thereby serve Christ even better. Paul tells his audience that God “tests” us through these hardships — not to break us or punish us; rather, God tempers us to make us perfect in Christ. His temporary hardships will bring blessings because they help develop agape love. This is the love that Christ exemplified on the Cross which reaped blessings for mankind. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus discovers that He is not accepted by His hometown. Jesus is shown preaching in the synagogue stunning the townspeople with his wisdom and power. However, the people wish to see great miracles performed by him in order to prove his authority. They challenge His authority because He is just a carpenter and a son of Mary (this last remark calls Him illegitimate!). Due to their lack of faith, Jesus performs no major miracle, here. Instead, he vanishes from their sight – a miracle in its own right. Thus, Mark illustrates that a miracle will only happen to those of faith in Christ. Without faith first, the Divine has little effect. If we recall the miracles of Jesus, we will see that not only is the physical cured but the spiritual garners benefits, too. In today’s modern world, we have to listen to God, too. Unfortunately, there is a growth in atheism and agnosti-cism. This makes it difficult to witness any miracle that does occur. In recent news, we have seen how people around the world think that they know best and the Divine is heedless or just plain missing. Like ancient Israel, people are placing their hope and future in the

hands of their leaders or false idols. It is their will that should be done and their “rights” that should be acknowledged. Many have no clue as to the conse-quences of their actions; nor do they care. They demand immediate satisfaction; yet, even that is never enough. They do not see nor do they want to see what is in the future for their children and their children’s children if they continue on their current course. They are only worried about the now and fail to even contemplate the future. Despite warning from the Church, the arrogance and pride of man has convinced many that faith in God

is useless. Yet, many people cry and yearn for a miracle from God, proving His existence and concern for the world. Others turn to politicians and scientists for solu-tions – repeating ancient Israel’s

mistakes. Recently, Pope Francis has issued an encyclical, “Laudato Si”, that addresses just one of the many problems that humanity faces. This concern of the Church is in the future of the planet. The Vicar of Christ proclaims his is concern that a few selfish world leaders, both political and in business, are reaping benefits at the expense of the planet. Through him and others, God warns all that their actions may condemn the planet to a fate that is unimaginable. God is speaking through His modern “prophets” but people fail to acknowledge the message. Their neighbors are drowning out the voices of Truth with lies and accusations. As in the Gospel, do we demand a “miraculous proof” before we listen to the message? Would we even recognize one if God, Himself, appeared and gave us one? Like Jesus in the Gospel, do we fail to see God because we refuse to see Him? Do we fail to “hear” Him because we refuse to “hear”? These problems will increase exponentially for mankind unless we listen to God who speaks through Holy Mother the Church. We have two choices. We can either respond with action and faith or we can continue to trust in the world and reap the consequences of our actions. These choices are ours due to free will. We will be held accountable as to how we use it.
