Officer Saves the Life of Opioid Overdose Victim

Thanks to Timely Training

An officer from the Guttenberg Police Department responded to a recent call only to find a resident who had apparently overdosed on opioids, and was able to save the man’s life thanks to the skillful application of

training and supplies received just days earlier.

In late February, P.O. Brian Polack was one of the first five Guttenberg officers to receive training in the use of Naloxone, a nasal spray used to revive individuals who have overdosed. Polack and his partner, P.O. Emilio Barroso, were on duty the night of Sunday, March 3 as a major storm dumped enough snow on the region to shutter schools and businesses. That’s when the call came in about an unresponsive adult male in a multi-family residence.

Arriving at the location the officers found an unconscious man with blue lips, dilated pupils, and other symptoms of an overdose. After Polack quickly administered Naloxone, the individual revived within minutes and was taken by EMS to a nearby hospital.

15 ALK Students Inducted into National Junior Honor Society

The Anna L. Klein School inducted one of its largest groups into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at their 10th annual ceremony on March 7. The event took place in the school’s cafetorium before a large

crowd of peers, administrators, and proud family members.

The NJHS is open to students in grades 6 through 8. Students must submit an application and meet rigorous standards to be accepted, including maintaining a high grade point average, engaging in community service, and exhibiting leadership qualities by participating in groups or clubs.

A total of 15 students were inducted this year after stringent review by a team of five teachers. The nine inductees in grade 6 were Nathan Blaya, Frida Castillo, Leanna Coello, Amelia Durango, Kamila Franco, Abdourahmane Mbengue, Amirkian Najafzadeh, Sherly Rodriguez, and Ashley Serrano. The six

The Naloxone, marketed under the brand name Narcan, came from a kit provided free by the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), who also deliver the training. Funded by a grant from the NJ Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the statewide program supplies police departments, emergency responders, and other groups with up to 25 kits containing two doses each of Naloxone along with gloves and a breathing shield to facilitate resuscitation.

Guttenberg’s entire police department subsequently underwent training in Naloxone use. RWJMS Health Educator Queenie Reda met with officers at several sessions in March to explain how and when to use the spray effectively.

COMBATING THE OPIOID EPIDEMICThe category of opioids comprises both prescription medications like Hydrocodone and Oxycodone and illegal substances like heroin or fentanyl.

Opioid use has exploded in popularity in recent years, with more than 49,000 deaths nationally involving opioids in 2017 – up from just over 10,000 in 2002, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

New Jersey ranks 18th in the country for number of deaths per capita (age-adjusted). In 2016 there were 1,409 opioid-related overdose death in New Jersey – a rate of 16 deaths per 100,000 persons, as compared with the national rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000.

Naloxone, while effective in treating overdoses, has no effect if administered to someone without opioids in their system. It is short-acting, with a quick response time, but it also disperses rapidly, allowing for the possibility of a relapse overdose even if the individual doesn’t ingest any more opioids.

The RSJMS training includes detailed instructions on Naloxone storage, identifying overdoses, steps and timing for administering the spray safely, expected results, and more.

In addition to police officers, certain town employees also received training in the use of Naloxone.

ALK School Principal Keith Petry opened the proceedings by welcoming the guests to the event and congratulating the honorees for their hard work and achievement, with NJHS Advisor Angela Travelli explaining the purpose and importance of the occasion.

Five of the students spoke about the pillars of the NJHS: Amelia Durango on scholarship, Amirkian Najafzadeh on leadership, Yasira Pineda on character, Sherly Rodriguez on service, and Ashley Serrano on citizenship.

Closing the ceremony was a stirring rendition of the Katy Perry song “Firework,” sung by Jaskaery Lizardo, Brianna Paulino, and Isabella Randell.

Following the presentation, everyone was treated to free pastries and refreshments.

Diana Merse Named Guttenberg Teacher of the Year

Sixth-grade math teacher Diana Merse has been proclaimed the 2019 Teacher of the Year in Guttenberg. She was presented with a certificate by Mayor Wayne Zitt and the Town Council in a ceremony in Town Hall on Feb. 25.

Born and raised in Guttenberg as one of 11 siblings, Merse has taught at Anna L. Klein School for 11 years. The certificate states that she has “given back to her community by teaching not only the students of Anna L. Klein School but also as a mentor for new teachers in the district.”

It goes on to say that “Ms. Merse works to open students’ minds to ideas, knowledge, and dreams.”

Nomination for the honor of Teacher of the Year is a stringent process requiring two letters of recommendation, a vote by peers, administrative input, and a rubric based on test scores, collegiality, community outreach, and more.

Among the rubric criteria is a measure of student growth for each teacher, measured on a scale of 1 to 4, with 2.5 or above considered effective and 3.5 as highly effective. Merse scored a perfect 4.0 out of 4.

“She’s a product of our school system and very dedicated,” said School Superintendent Michelle Rosenberg. “She’s an amazing asset and we’re lucky to have her.”

“It’s nice to be recognized,” said Merse, adding with a laugh, “plus I got a parking spot. That’s one of the perks.”

Hudson County Office of Consumer Protection Offers Free Services to Residents

Mayor Wayne Zitt and the Town Council have invited numerous Hudson County agencies to join together and host a free event on Friday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the community room at 136 69th St.

Everyone is invited to attend this important session sponsored by the Guttenberg Housing Authority in conjunction with the Hudson County Office of Consumer Affairs, the Sheriff’s Department, and the Veteran’s/SHIP Office.

A previous session was held in town hall on Wednesday, Feb. 20. These events are designed to showcase and make available a wide variety of programs and services available free to residents, along with information to help protect yourself against the fraud and scams that are so prevalent today.

The events also provide attendees with the opportunity to get free medical IDs. The photo IDs include important data including name and address, medical conditions, allergies, and emergency contact info, all of which is critical for first responders in the event of an emergency. The IDs are provided free through the county’s IDENT-ADULT program.

These sessions are coordinated and hosted by Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez. Among the many county officials meeting with residents and sharing information are Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari, Undersheriff Francine Shelton, Director Frank Alonzo (Weights & Measures), S.H.I.P. Coordinator Joann Northgrave and S.H.I.P Counselor Magdalena Pacheco (Health & Human Services), Lynda Kennedy (Consumer Affairs), and Det. Tori Carter.

Representatives from various departments are available at these sessions to provide valuable information and resources to keep residents safe, while Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager Maria Moreano from Freedom Bank offers information on the bank’s many services and valuable information on protecting your money.

Easter Egg Hunt Coming on April 20

The Guttenberg Recreation Department is sponsoring its third annual Easter Egg Hunt beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20 in Waterfront Park. Don’t miss this chance to meet the Easter Bunny live.

The town is providing more than 1,000 Easter eggs for kids to gather in their yearly scurry across the expansive lawn adjacent to the Hudson River. Prizes will be given to children who find special eggs scattered randomly among the others, and there will be additional exciting raffles prizes. A live DJ will provide the entertainment, with free cotton candy for everyone.

A shuttle service will pick up residents at Anna L. Klein School between 10 a.m. and 10:45 to take them to the event, and will bring them back afterward. Parking on site at the event is extremely limited so taking the shuttle is highly recommended.

Waterfront Park is located at 7100 River Road. With its great playground, picnic areas, and world-class views of uptown New York, the park is a sparkling jewel on the Gold Coast and a perfect spot for Guttenberg residents to spend a pleasant afternoon.

In the event of inclement weather, the Easter Egg Hunt will take place inside the community center.

Mayor Zitt Welcomes Cat in the Hat to the Library

Mayor Wayne Zitt wowed the crowd at the Guttenberg Resource Center when he showed up on Friday, Feb. 22 costumed as “Thing 1” – a character from the works of Dr. Seuss – to read the book “Green Eggs and Ham” to a large group of appreciative youngsters.

The occasion was the North Bergen Free Public Library’s annual Dr. Seuss Celebration, held in honor of Read Across America, a national initiative to encourage reading among kids. Launched in 1998, Read Across America coincides with the birthday of beloved children’s book author/illustrator Dr. Seuss (aka Theodor Seuss Geisel).

Thing 1 – or rather, Mayor Zitt – was accompanied by Seuss’ most famous creation, the Cat in the Hat, as he gave a spirited reading of the Seuss classic.

Also part of the event was an energetic and hugely entertaining magic performance by Anthony from Triple Platinum Entertainment, filled with jokes and gags that amused the adults just as much as the delighted kids.

The event wrapped up with Mayor Zitt and Library Director Sai Rao handing out goodie bags to all the attendees.

The Town of Guttenberg also adopted a resolution in February supporting Read Across America and Read Across America-NJ, “to engage in programs and activities to make America’s children the best readers in the world.”

Read Across America-NJ is conducted statewide by the New Jersey Education Association in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities, the New Jersey Library Association, and local affiliates, to promote reading and adult involvement in the education of students.

Two Senior Events Upcoming for Easter

Guttenberg senior citizens certainly won’t lack for things to do this Easter. Mayor Wayne Zitt and the Guttenberg Town Council invite seniors to participate in two separate events this season.

First up is an Easter Cupcake Decorating Party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 4. RSVP by April 1 to Marisol Montanez at 201-868-2315 ext. 152 to join the fun.

Then on Friday, April 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. it’s the annual Senior Easter Dance Party, complete with great food, decorations, and a live DJ to heat up the dance floor. There will be limited seating, so RSVP by April 8 to the number above to attend.

Both events will take place at the Guttenberg Senior Center, 7005 Blvd. East.

Register by Apr. 18 for Free Citizenship Courses at the Resource Center

The North Bergen Free Public Library is offering free 15-week citizenship courses at the Guttenberg Resource Center and the main library building in North Bergen. Beginner and high intermediate/advanced level classes are available.

Register by Apr. 18 to participate. Classes begin April 19.

The courses are funded through the Citizenship and Assimilation Grant Program, which was awarded to the library by the Department of Homeland Security. The grant aims to help organizations promote prospective citizens’ assimilation into American civic life by funding educational programs designed to increase their knowledge of English, U.S. history, and civics.

Bring your green card when you register. A $50 refundable attendance deposit is required (check or money order).

Early Discounts on Summer Camp Registration

Begin April 1

Registration for Guttenberg’s Summer Camp is opening earlier than usual this year, with discounts available to those who sign up early. The day-camp style social and educational experience is open to children ages 5 to 16 years old (must have completed kindergarten).

Guttenberg’s Recreation Department provides participants with daily structured activities and games, weekly Adventure Club trips, bowling, swimming, and arts & crafts. Children are also provided a daily lunch and afternoon snack at no additional cost.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for six or seven weeks, with the schedule to be announced. Activity locations include the Guttenberg Community Center, Veterans Park, the Guttenberg Softball Field, Waterfront Park, and the Anna L. Klein School.

Register online beginning April 1 at https://register.communitypass.net/guttenbergtownship or in person at the Gerald R. Drasheff Community Center, Hudson Avenue at 68th Street, between 3:30 and 7 p.m. on Monday to Friday. Proof of residency is required.

The Rec Department is also accepting applications for students ages 16 and up who are looking to work this summer as camp counselors. Applications are available at the community center or at Town Hall, 6808 Park Avenue. This is a paid position with various shifts between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Guttenberg Cleans Up with Free Recycle Bins

for Residents

Mayor Wayne Zitt and the Town Council are offering free recycling bins to residents in one-, two-, and three-family homes. Anyone who is interested in receiving a free bin can contact the Guttenberg Department of Public Works at 201-868-2315, ext. 240.

The town recently obtained a grant to purchase 760 of the dark blue, 45-gallon, two-wheeled recycling bins to help our residents sort their disposables and keep our streets and sidewalks clean through- out town.

Oficial Salva la Vida de una Víctima de Sobredosis de Opioides Gracias a un Entrenamiento Oportuno

Un oficial del Departamento de Policía de Guttenberg respondió a una llamada reciente solo para encontrar a un residente que aparentemente había tomado

una sobredosis de opioides y pudo salvar la vida del hombre gracias a la hábil aplicación de la capacitación y los suministros recibidos apenas unos días antes.

A finales de Febrero, P.O. La naloxona, comercializada con el nombre de marca Narcan, provino de un kit proporcionado gratuitamente por la Escuela de Medicina Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson (RWJMS), que también imparte la capacitación. La maestra de matemáticas de sexto grado, Diana Merse, ha sido proclamada la Maestra del Año 2019 en Guttenberg. El Alcalde Wayne Zitt y los Concejales le presentaron un certificado en una ceremonia en el Ayuntamiento el 25 de Febrero.

Nacida y criada en Guttenberg como una de los 11 hermanos, Merse ha enseñado en la Escuela Anna L. Klein durante 11 años. El certificado indica que ella ha “devuelto a su comunidad enseñando no solo a los estudiantes de la Escuela Anna L. Klein, sino también como mentor para maestros nuevos en el distrito”.

Continúa diciendo que “la Sra. Merse trabaja para abrir las mentes de los estudiantes a ideas, conocimientos y sueños “.

Campamento de Verano Comienzan Abril 1

La inscripción para el Campamento de Verano de Guttenberg se abrirá antes de lo habitual este año, con descuentos disponibles para aquellos que se inscriban temprano. La experiencia social y educativa de estilo de campamento diurno está abierta a niños de 5 a 16 años (debe haber completado Kindergarten).
