Standardized Test Scoring

• Test scores are used to identify student progress, see how students are performing in different schools, and see how different groups of students perform relative to others

• Scores are used for Academic Placement into Honors, Accelerated, & Intervention Classes

• HCS uses MAP, SC READY, and SC PASS for standardized testing

Standardized Test Scoring

• Un-timed

• Used to measure student progress and growth in reading and math

• The difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all the

previous questions

• The score is unrelated to the age or grade of the student, but reflects the level at

which the student is currently performing

• The percentile (%) given by the MAP report shows how a student’s score

compares to all other students in the nation who completed the MAP at that grade

level

DISCOVERY CLASSES

• ART- Exposure to a variety of art forms, techniques, processes, materials, and artistic styles; 2 dimensional & 3 dimensional art projects

• STEM- Introduces students to the engineering design process and creative computing through hands-on, project based learning; study solutions for various engineering and computer coding challenges

• INTRO TO CAREERS- Intro to career exploration, frequent guest speakers, assessing personal strengths as they relate to career decisions, team building activities, and social skills training

• PE/HEALTH EDUCATION- Learn skills to promote wellness, maintain health, and prevent diseases; health enhancing physical activities that include organized sport games, individualized fitness checks, concepts of safety, fair play and sportsmanship are taught

DISCOVERY CLASSES

• KEYBOARDING - Introduction to entering alphabetic, numeric and symbolic information on a keyboard using the touch method of key stroking. Emphasis is placed on development of accuracy, good techniques and correct fingering (6th grade)

• DIGITAL LITERACY/GOOGLE BASICS- Exposed to a broad range of computer technology from basic hardware/ software to applications and the internet, Word & Google explored (7th/8th grade )

• LEADERSHIP-Service learning type experience; focuses on character building, community service opportunities (8th grade )

• READ 180- Comprehensive system of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development proven to raise reading achievement for struggling readers; designed for any student reading two or more years below grade level

DISCOVERY CLASSES

• GENERAL MUSIC- Experience music through listening, performing, reading and writing musical notation, and analyzing the music of composers of a wide range of styles and periods

• BAND – Instruction to students in playing a wind or percussion instrument. Basic elements of music theory and technique

trumpet, flute, saxophone, French horn, tuba, clarinet

• CHORUS- Designed for the student who enjoys and wishes to explore music through singing. The course introduces the fundamentals of choral singing and note reading skills through a variety of contemporary choral literature. After school performance required (7th & 8th grade)

• ORCHESTRA- Instruction to students in playing a string orchestra instrumentviola, violin, cello, & bass

• MEDIA ARTS- Develop acting skills, create improvised and written scenes, study the roles of the director, actors, and writers, and make connections between theatre and other art disciplines
