From the From the From the From the Deacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's Laptop:::: The Dignity of Human Life – Part 2
“Which of these three, in your opinion was a neighbor to the robber’s victim?” He answered, “The one who treated
him with mercy.” Jesus said to him “Go and do likewise.”(Luke 10:36-37)
Today’s Gospel of the Good Samaritan, highlights the next section of the Catechism in the Part 3, Section 1,
Chapter 1 on the “Dignity of the Human Person” and in particular Articles 4 entitled “Morality of Human Acts”.
The morality of human acts depends on three sources: the object chosen, either a true or apparent good; the
intention of the subject who acts, that is, the purpose for which the subject performs the act; and the
circumstances of the act, which include its consequences. In the case of the Good Samaritan the object is the
wounded man, the intention is to help the wound man, and the circumstance is the recovery of the wounded man.
In this instance, all three sources existed. It is not always the case and generally when an act is performed the
doer does not normally think to themselves about object, intention, circumstances. Circumstances can increase or
diminish the responsibility of the one who is acting but they cannot change the moral quality of the acts
themselves. They never make good an act which is in itself evil.
The dignity of a human person requires the uprightness of a moral conscience (which is to say that it be in
accord with what is just and good according to reason and the law of God). Because of this personal dignity, no
one may be forced to act contrary to conscience; nor, within the limits of the common good, be prevented from
acting according to it. An upright and true moral conscience is formed by education and by assimilating the Word
of God and the teaching of the Church. It is supported by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and helped by the advice of
wise people. Prayer and an examination of conscience can also greatly assist one’s moral formation. There are
three general norms for conscience to follow: 1) one may never do evil so that good may result from it; 2) the so-
called Golden Rule, “Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them” (Matthew 7:12); 3) charity
always proceeds by way of respect for one’s neighbor and his conscience, even though this does not mean
accepting as good something that is objectively evil. In the Gospel the Good Samaritan followed all three of these
rules without think through the process, he just did it.
Through our Baptism and Confirmation we have been given the tools to develop our moral conscience including
the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit (*CCC 1830-1832), cardinal virtues (*CCC 1805-1809), theological virtues
(*CCC 1812-1821) and grace (*CCC1810-1811). But we must use these tools in our lives to be able to acquire and
strengthen the repetition of morally good acts so that they may purify and elevate us by divine grace.
Lord Jesus Christ, true light of the world, you guide all mankind to salvation. Give us the ability to follow your
direction “to do likewise” to build a world of justice and peace though our actions, ready for the coming of that
kingdom. Amen.

The Christmas program for the Fluvanna Women’s Correctional Center is supported by area churches to provide the women of the facility with perhaps the only Christmas gift they will receive this year. The items will be distributed the 1st Week of December but we are required to get these items cleared through the prison system earlier, and so we are collecting the items listed below. A gallon-sized zip lock bag is used to include all the hygiene. Monetary contributions are gratefully accepted to purchase items when we do not receive enough donations. The box is located in the entrance foyer of the church. Saints Peter and Paul’s prison ministry thanks all those who have supported this program in the past and for those who will support these women now.

The Knights of Columbus will be conducting a Membership Drive after the Masses next weekend. All Catholic men eighteen years and older are urged to find out more about us and what it means to you and your family to benefit from the greatest family organization in the world.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics and the Knights of Columbus were there as a partner when the first International Summer Olympics were held in 1968 at Soldiers Field, Chicago. We have been there supporting them ever since. We have held fund raisers throughout the order for God’s Special People. Supreme Board of Directors has committed themselves of $250,000 annually to grow the Special Olympics programs. They are also working with other countries worldwide to also grow and honor those athletes in connection with the Special Olympics.
Every year our council holds the KOVAR drive as others do throughout the state where a large portion of the funds collected also goes to the Special Olympics. This is our Tootsie Roll drive where every cent goes to help not only them but people with special needs.
Locally we help with the bowling tournaments, 5K races, basketball games, the Winter Olympics when held in the area, tennis tournaments and many other endeavors that come up in the area every year.
The Special Olympics gives these athletes a feeling of accomplishment, pride and belief in themselves that they can do things never thought possible by others. When we the Knights, are there and help out and see the desire and will to completion of others, it gives us a feeling of gratification of knowing we were there to see small miracles. Not all of them win, but all of them try and in doing so makes them all equal.
Another one that’s a popular fund raiser that is growing every year is the Polar Plunge. Money pledged and collected by Knights for sponsorship of jumping into frozen lakes, rivers and the ocean for the sake of helping to raise funds. To date the Knights of Columbus have raised more then half a BILLION dollars for those with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Since the Special Olympics started in 1968, millions of
these athletes have benefited through the funds and
assistance given by the Knights of Columbus who have
worked hand in hand with the communities, states and
countries that help to sponsor these Special Athletes
toward their independence and accomplishments.
