The Campaign Purpose
The Victoria Against Violence – 16
Days of Activism initiative provides
an opportunity for the community’s
voices to be heard, singularly and
collectively, through awareness raising
activities throughout the state.
It provides the community with
opportunities to promote gender
equity, participate in the family
violence discussion and support
those who have experienced family
and gender violence.
Everyone has a role to play in
preventing family and gender violence
– individuals, schools, workplaces,
churches, sporting clubs and
government. We can all be part of the
solution and help break the cycle of
violence against women for the next
generation.
Theme
The Victoria Against Violence theme
for 2015 is Unite and Change. Orange
is the colour designated by the UN

violence against women and girls.
Unite and Change with other
Victorians wearing and displaying
Orange to show your support for
ending family and gendered violence.
Timing - 25 November until 10 December 2015

with the United Nations 16 Days
of Activism against gendered
violence. This will commence on the
International Day for the Elimination
of Violence Against Women

Key Facts and Stats
Violence affects too many families in Victoria.
• This year, more than one women has been killed violently every week (Source: Destroy the Joint – Counting Dead Women).
• 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence by a partner, other known person or stranger (Violence against women: Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Personal Safety Survey, 2012)
• 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence by a partner, other known person or stranger (Violence against women: Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Personal Safety Survey, 2012)
• In Victoria, the number of family incident reports submitted by police rose from 50,382 in 2012 to 70,906 in June 2015 (Crime Statistics Agency, 30 June 2015)
Family and gendered violence has a significant impact on the health of the Victorian community.
• Family and gendered violence takes many forms. It is more than slapping, punching and sexual violence – it can be social, emotional and financial control and indirect harassment via telephone and email
• 1 in 4 employed women took time off work as a result of their most recent incident of physical assault by a male cohabiting partner. (Violence against women: Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Personal Safety Survey, 2012)
• In Victoria, violence against women is the number one contributor to death and disability in women aged 15 to 44 – more than any other well-known risk factor, including high blood pressure, obesity and smoking
• Research and evidence links family violence to gender inequality. Women have a right to the same status and opportunities as men and relationships should be equal, respectful and safe
• At an individual level, the most consistent predictor of the use of violence among men is their agreement with sexist, patriarchal and/or sexually hostile attitudes
• Many people hold violence excusing attitudes and beliefs. One in four is prepared to excuse partner violence and one in five believes there are circumstances in which a woman bears some responsibility for the behaviour. More than half of people believe that a woman could leave a violent relationship if she really wanted to
• 35% of Victorians have a low understanding of the characteristics of family violence
• Societies with greater gender equality also enjoy lower levels of violence against women.
