This weekend our country observes
Labor Day, a day dedicated to the recognition
of the dignity of work. While the labor unions were
instrumental in the establishment of this holiday and are still
central to its observance, this holiday is an opportunity for
us to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of all
positive work as a participation in the creative work of God.
That work might be physical, mental, emotional or
relational.
As pastor of a parish, I am the administrator of an
organization with employees and I am grateful for the fine,
hard-working staff the parish has. But I also realize that, as
pastor, I am leader of a “voluntary association.” And, so, I am
mindful of and thankful for both our employees and the
many volunteers in the parish community.
While the unions and other labor associations may
get a lot of attention on Labor Day, I am especially mindful
of the many voluntary associations that help make our USA
so great. It was the Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville who
toured and studied our young democracy in the 1830’s and
identified the very strong experience of volunteerism among
our people. He presented this defining quality of this new
nation in his famous Democracy in America. In fact, even
today researchers have found that a greater percentage of
people volunteer in the US than in other countries of the
world.
Researchers have also found that persons involved
in churches and other religious communities have a higher
rate of volunteerism in civic organizations as well. I suggest
this is one of the many rarely-recognized ways our churches
help and energize our civic society.
Every pastor certainly knows that he would not
have much of a parish at all if it were not for the many
volunteers. And I also know by experience that volunteers
can work just as hard as employees. Of course, we pastors
promote involvement in the parish community not just as a
nice thing to do with one’s extra time. But, rather, such
involvement flows from our common Baptism by which all
are called to be servants and missionary disciples for Christ.
Faith is not a “spectator sport.”
Many parishes celebrate the gifts of their various
volunteers with an annual parish celebration. The volunteers
themselves are quick to say they don’t need such
recognition. And, yet, the ministries and volunteerism of a
community is the basis for its life. And so it is something to
acknowledge and celebrate. I am hoping we can begin such
an observance in our parish in the near future.
Fr. Joe McCormick, OSA Pastor

It is the responsibility of the Building
and Grounds Commission to oversee the
church and its surrounding grounds as
well as the rectory to make certain
everything is in proper repair and working order. In
addition, commission members evaluate the need for
updates, improvements and beautification.
On a regular basis, members inspect the interior and
exterior of the buildings and the surrounding property for
any potential problems as well as scrutinize the fire safety
equipment in both buildings. It is also the responsibility of
the commission to review and award service contracts for
lawn care and snow removal
When warranted, bids are acquired from vendors to address
more detailed projects. Any plans for expansion or
modification to the rectory, church or surrounding area
would be managed through the Building and Grounds
Commission.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Being humble. Jesus is closely watched today as he dines
at a powerful man’s home. But Jesus also pays attention.
Who has his attention today? The poor, the cripple, the
lame, the blind. Take the last place, he says! Be humble!
Look to the needs of others! Really? Really!
►How will I be less pushy and more humble?
►How will I foster the needs and even the prestige of
another?
► Gospel urges us to look to works of mercy. Which one
will I pick and do?
Our Monday night Bible Discussion
group will resume on Monday,
September 8th at 7pm. If you want to
have a better understanding of the Bible
and join in discussion, then come give it
a try. All are welcome!
