The Zoutpansberger caught up with Koen on Monday evening shortly after their arrival in the Soutpansberg. He and his team were welcomed by the Louis Trichardt Agora ladies who, in part- nership with their sister club in Belgium (Agora Lokeren Belgium), invited Koen as part of an international support project. Agora Lokeren has generously sponsored the Eyes For The World Project, with Agora Louis Trichardt to do the same by raising funds for the project. “Agora has worked closely with the Department of Education, who enthusiastically bought into this project and gave support in identifying three schools where screening will take place. These schools are Elim Primary, Masungulo Primary and Ozias Davhane High School,” said Sandy van Niekerk from the local Agora Club. The project entails testing children’s eyes and giving them a pair a spectacles if needed. But these aren’t just ordinary spectacles. They are the product of years of research and development, allowing Koen and his team to hand each child in need thereof a pair of spectacles within five minutes after testing starts – at no charge and with no waiting period to have the spectacles made. For this purpose, Koen makes use of adjust- able spectacles (Adspecs) or focussed spectacles (Focusspec). These spectacles were specifically developed for this project. With the Adspecs, high-quality silicone gel is pumped in between two durable plastic membranes. It allows for 50 optical variants, all possible in one pair of spec- tacles. Focusspecs, on the other hand, make use of an adjustable slide lens system whereby two lenses are slid across each other to the required magnification. Koen became an optometrist in 1988 and comes from a long line of optometrists in his family. He has always had a pas- sion for his work, but were it not for a near-fatal accident, he would never have been able to help hundreds of people across the world who are struggling with poor eyesight. He was severely injured, lost the sight in one of his eyes and struggled for months to recover. This included learning to walk again. “I asked myself why, but I could not answer that. I then realized that I wanted to do some- thing for people,” said Koen. Koen came up with the idea of helping to improve people’s eyesight by means of adjustable spectacles in 1985. Through his trav- els, he identified many problems. The biggest prob- lem he identified was people who could not afford a pair of spectacles, and not just in developing countries. His research into affordable spectacles brought him into contact with Prof Joshua Silver, a profes- sor of physics at Oxford University, of the Centre for Vision. The two started working together in an effort to come up with a solution. Prof Silver played around with a couple of ideas and manufac- tured the first pair of adjustable spectacles about eight years ago. “I told Joshua that the spectacles were too heavy and that he must remember that we were working with children. We had a chat and brainstormed and created a new design that was much more comfortable to wear and three times lighter than the initial spectacles,” Koen said. The new Adspecs were announced to the media in 2013. Since then, Koen and his team have been traveling the world and distributing these specta- cles. Although they are given out for free, they cost around 20 Euros per set to manufacture. Because of this, Eyes For The World rely heavily on do- nations. Eyes Of The World want to make a difference world wide by restoring people’s vision

Changing lives foreverBy Andries van Zyl

- bladsy 2

One man’s vision and dream to make a differ-ence have literally changed the lives of hundreds of people across the world with his efforts to restore their vision.

Koen van Pottelbergh from Belgium and his team from Eyes For The World, a non-profi t foun-dation he started, visited schools in the Elim area this week with only one goal – to help improve people’s eyesight.

The Zoutpansberger caught up with Koen on Monday evening shortly after their arrival in the Soutpansberg. He and his team were welcomed by the Louis Trichardt Agora ladies who, in part-nership with their sister club in Belgium (Agora Lokeren Belgium), invited Koen as part of an international support project.

(Contd from P1)“My motto is that everyone in the world has the

right to good eyesight,” said Koen.

But the visit to Elim, where 300 pairs of spec-tacles were handed out over a two-day period, will not stop there. “We want to come back every three or four years and follow up on the children,” Koen said. This is where, he said, local people and businesses can play a huge role. Businesses like Specsavers in Louis Trichardt are already on-board with the project.

“Our policy states that every child under 13 years can qualify for a pair of free spectacles,” said Sanri du Plessis of Specsavers in Louis Trichardt. From her side, she will follow up on children who are in need of more specialised treatment that a normal pair of spectacles cannot solve and who have been identified at the schools visited.

“I think we can help about 85% children around the world through projects like these,” Koen said.

For the first time ever, they have also used a small mobile eye tester, developed by Rockmed, during their visit. This allowed them to do more specialised and accurate tests on the children.

Koen and his Eyes For The World team wrapped up their visit to the region on Wednesday, but it was not yet time to depart for home again. They will also be visiting Soweto, where they will be distributing a further 200 spectacles as part of their project.

For more information on the Eyes For The World Foundation and the work they do, Koen invited residents to visit their website at http://www.eyes-fortheworld.be/en/index.html

Hy begin sy onderwysloopbaan in Pretoria by Hoërskool Voortrekkerhoogte.

Tshivhulu is in April verlede jaar in hegtenis geneem, nadat hy sewe Bonsmaras by mnr.

Mnr. Louis Cilliers het Maandag as nuwe skoolhoof by die skool begin.

“Gister was vir my ‘n fantastiese dag.

So wil ek graag ‘n verskil maak in elke

Residents along Ruh Street in Louis Trichardt will soon have the opportunity to drive on a tarred road surface again without fearing dam-age to their vehicles.

Over the past couple of years, Ruh Street between Anderson and President Street had fallen into a state of total disrepair. The worst part was between Kro-gh and Kruger Street, with most motorists opting not to drive on this stretch of road at all because of countless potholes. More recently, Ruh Street next to Soutpansberg Primary was temporarily repaired,

much to the delight of parents having to drop off and pick up their children from school.

The past week saw heavy machinery moving in and starting to remove the top layer of the road surface in Ruh Street completely. Munic-ipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi confirmed on Tuesday that the rebuilding of Ruh Street forms part of the Makhado Municipality’s on-going street refurbishment programme.

The rebuilding of Ruh Street will be con-ducted in phases. This entails only removing one part of the road surface to allow single-lane traffic on the opposite side. Once the one side of the street has been finished, the other side will be tackled. The contractor appointed for the rebuilding of the street is Mukhatshane Construction and the completion date for the contract is September 2015.

Further good news for residents is that Ruh Street is not the only street earmarked for re-building or resurfacing. This project is but one to be financed out of the R13,7 million allocated for the upgrading of streets in town. Other streets to receive attention, Bobodi said, include Celliers-, Waterbessie- and Tshirululuni Street.

Ruh Street in Louis Trichardt was abuzz this week with heavy machinery moving in to strip the top layers of this dilapidated road. The street is to be totally rebuilt, with a completion date of September this year.

Municipality tackle “pothole” streets

015 297 1268/9.

Friends and family were saddened by the passing away of Mr Dion Edmunds of Louis Trichardt on 8 April. He passed away at the age of 44, and leaves behind his wife Thelma and three children Cherelize, Noel and Antony. A funeral was held for Dion at the Jehovah’s Kingdom Church here in Louis Trichardt on Tuesday, 14 April. Photo supplied.

The Makhado Municipality had several farm owners up in arms when their electricity supply was abruptly cut off during March.

Despite a possible loss in production, the increased safety risk due to security systems’ being rendered useless also had some farm owners fuming. “We were not warned that the power to our farms was going to be cut,” said one irate farmer, who asked to remain anonymous.

Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bo-bodi confirmed during the past week that the municipality had indeed disconnected the power supply to some farms from 16 to 20 March. This was done “due to the fact that owners and or users of electricity did not respond to finalise their supply and wayleave agreements with the municipal-ity which have been outstanding for many years,” Bobodi said.

A total of six farms (supply points) were affected by the power cuts and, said Bobo-di, the municipality had done everything in their power to inform the affected farmers of their intention. “Regrettably, some users changed their telephone numbers without informing the municipality. In some instances, users other than the one registered are also using the electricity without informing the municipality, which is illegal,” Bobodi said.

According to Bobodi, all farm owners in the Makhado electrical distribution area should have a supply and wayleave agreement in place with the municipal-ity as supplier. This, Bobodi said, was necessary as electricity was a dangerous service and because it was operated and maintained on privately owned land/farms, it must be regulated in terms of

the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Electricity Act and other legislation and by-laws. “It must also be mentioned that for years it has been required, and it is still the case,” Bobodi said.

As far as could be determined, all new land owners who took ownership of a farm after June 2012 must now, however, sign a new supply and wayleave agreement with the municipality. “Electricity is being used by people other than the owners without proper agreements or, in some cases, users only change the addresses and still use electricity illegally in someone else’s name without the updated current fees or deposits,” Bobodi said.

Bobodi said it was not enough for an address change to be made or an account to be opened in the new owner’s name. “A formal supply and wayleave agreement must be signed in order to comply with safety legislation. It is alarming how many farms where electricity is supplied, chang-es had been made illegally to the capacity, position of the supply point or severe cases of tampering with the registration of the energy (meters),” Bobodi said.

He further explained that some cus-tomers opted to redeem the assets [pay for the electrical infrastructure] over 20 years and therefore an agreement to that effect had to be concluded. “Many cases are now being discovered where the actual capital for supply points has not yet been redeemed, which means that the customer had received the assets free of charge. The municipality has therefore adopted a resolution that all changes in ownership or users of electricity on rural farms and villages, by means of agreements, shall be physically investigated, reconciled to the

records and consulted with the new own-ers\users to correct the legal process and recover the arrears of outstanding capital and maintenance fees,” Bobodi said.

The power supply to the six farms was eventually restored. “After consultation and agreements reached with the affected parties, the power was restored and will again be disconnected if the agreements reached by consultation are not hon-oured,” Bobodi said.

As for the safety aspect of the abrupt power cuts, Bobodi said that the munici-pality was mindful of the security situation on farms, but that they had gone to such extremes (cutting the power supply) to elicit a response from customers who were not cooperating.

‘n netbalkliniek by Mariepskop.Twee busse vol energieke meisies

het sing-sing die vyf-uur-lange rit kort gemaak. Ná ‘n lekker nagrus is daar

The Way, the Truth and the Life

1 Tomothy 1:12-20

Every year many ships are wrecked and end up on the bottom of the ocean,

which means the loss of valuable ships, all the cargo and often the loss of lives. It is dangerous for ships to drift about on the ocean without any power.

Many people drift about from place to place and many end up as human wrecks. They never seem to come to an understanding of the truth.

Paul warned the Ephesians that they must not become spiritual drifters who would be tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting. (Ephesians 4:14).

Beware of drifting because you might miss the harbour where there is safety. The place of safety is Christ and fellow-ship with His people.

Our reading mentions two people, Alexander and Hymenaeus, who were heretics. They had become spiritual “shipwrecks” when they rejected the gospel preached by Paul.

Christ is the only way of salvation. No-one else has paid the penalty for sin.

There is a warning here to each one of us, remain faithful to Christ regardless of what happens. If you remain faithful to Christ you will one day enter the heavenly harbour. May you be one of those people who will live eternally with Christ. - 079 5168303

BRIEWE / LETTERS

Woensdagoggend vieruur lui Daisy se selfoon.Sy grom onvriendelik, “Dit beter baie

goed wees!”“Daisy, jy moet asseblief kom help!

Pak jou tasse!”

“Oukei Kathy, ek is nou wakker. Nou kan jy

verduidelik.

“Right.

Deadlines is duiwels. En ek is so jammer jy slaap nie en eet nie. But look on the bright side – al die stres en koffi e en sigarette en fi sieke werk, en daai spekkies om jou middellyf gaan sommer vinnig verdwyn.” Daisy giggel suutjies.

Dis vrekken baie geld vir my, my vriendin.

Kathy snik. “Ek weet nie regtig nie, Daisy. Jy moet asseblief my hand kom vashou, sodat ek kan dink en beplan. Jy moet kom verf. Nes ek moet bid vir genade vir hierdie projek. Kom net asseblief, ons sal iets uitfi gure.”

Daisy sug.“Nou goed. Bernard lê nog oopmond en slaap

“Fokus, Daisy, fokus. Jy wou sê van wanneer Bernard wakker is?”

“O ja, ek sal by hom hoor of hy dalk in daai rigting vlieg vandag. Ek pak solank my tasse.”

Local cyclists conquered the Sout-pansberg Mountain, as well as some new challenges it had to offer.

The event was the annual Cycle Centre Challenge that was hosted in the Komatiland Forests, with an exciting new and improved Olympic Cross Country track. Members of the Soutpansberg Youth Cycling Devel-opment (SYCD) helped to build this new track over the last few months, which ensured a gruelling and adren-aline-fi lled race.

The lovely weather paved the way for a spectacular day out on the track for the more than 60 cyclists who participated in the four different races. Parents and spectators were able to view all the action from various points

along the 6km route, which was fi lled with booms, table-tops and drop-offs. There was also an easier track for the younger kids, as well as the women, with the men battling it out on the diffi cult track.

Kombo Bere, who started the race 30 seconds behind the leading bunch, won the race with a powerful display of riding that saw him catch up to and then outpace his main rival, Edwin Simpson, midway during the fi rst lap of the race. Kombo fi nished all four laps in a time of 01:17:47, with his fastest lap time being 00:19:06.

The fastest woman was Wendy Cambell with a lap time of 00:32:18.

Other age category winners, with their fastest lap time in brackets, were

Cyclists conquer Cycle Centre ChallengeMarco Roets (Jnr Men U/19 00:22:20), Adrian Jou-bert (Jnr Men U/23 00:28:19), Marc van Zyl (Elite men 23-29 00:26:01), Nico Geldenhuys (Sub-Vet men 00:22:51), Casper Venter (Vet men 00:22:21), Chanté du Plessis (Jnr women 17-18 00:33:16), and Christie Thomas (Vet Woman 00:35:35).

For the young men (15 – 16 years) the race proved to be a gruelling task. Zian van den Heever, who led the bunch in the fi rst lap, suffered a fall in the “rock garden” and had to quit the race. The race was won by Robert Retief from Merensky (00:22:27), followed by Matthew Wilkinson from Standford Lake (00:23:05) and James Raper from High School Louis Trichardt (00:26:00).

The first junior boy was Armand Cronjé of Merensky (00:06:13), followed by Casper John Venter from Ridgeway Independent (00:06:24) and Eugene van den Heever of P&L Hardware Club (00:06:27).

The first nipper boy was Antony Clayton (00:07:11) and the fi rst girl was Anischka Neetling (00:10:28).

For more photographs of all the action at the race, readers can log on to www.zoutpansberger.co.za for a full gallery.

Part of this year’s Cycle Centre Challenge went through the Bas & Cas route, which Dr Casper Venter had helped design. Dr Venter fi nished fi rst in the category for veteran men.
