Oh, St. John Paul, from the window of heaven, grant us your blessing! Bless the church that you loved and served and guided, courageously leading it along the paths of the world in order to bring Jesus to everyone and everyone to Jesus. Bless the young, who were your great passion. Help them dream again, help them look up high again to find the light that illuminates the paths of life here on earth. May you bless families, bless each family! You warned of Satan's assault against this precious and indispensable divine spark that God lit on earth. St. John Paul, with your prayer, may you protect the family and every life that blossoms from the family. Pray for the whole world, which is still marked by tensions, wars and injustice. You tackled war by invoking dialogue and planting the seeds of love: pray for us so that we may be tireless sowers of peace. Oh St. John Paul, from heaven's window, where we see you next to Mary, send God's blessing down upon us all. Amen.

G S Today’s bulle n cover features an ar st’s rendi on (engraving by A. Malaer) of the

martyrdom of Saint Isaac Jogues, whose Feast Day is celebrated on 19 October with Saint John de Brébeuf and the North American Martyrs. Saint Isaac was a 17th Century member of the Society of Jesus/the Jesuits who crossed the ocean blue not in 1492 like Christopher Columbus, or in 1625 like brother Jesuit Saint de Brébeuf, but in 1636. A er hearing Saint John’s and Saint Charles Lallemant’s accounts of hardship, treachery, and torture that o en awaited missionaries in the new world, it was his desire to “devote himself to labour there for the conversion and welfare of the na ves.” Below is an excerpt from one such account:

“When you reach the Hurons”, writes Saint John de Brébeuf, “you will indeed find hearts full of charity; we will receive you with open arms as an Angel of Paradise, we shall have all the inclina on in the world to do you good; but we are so situated that we can do very li le. We shall receive you in a Hut, so mean that I have scarcely found in France one wretched enough to compare it with; that is how you will be lodged. Harassed and fa gued as you will be, we shall be able to give you nothing but a poor mat, or at most a skin, to serve you as a bed; and, besides, you will arrive at a season when miserable li le insects that we call here Taouhac, and, in good French, pulces [fleas], will keep you awake almost all night, for in these countries they are incomparably more troublesome than in France; the dust of the Cabin nourishes them … We get them in their houses; and this pe y martyrdom, not to speak of Mosquitoes, Sandflies, and other like vermin, lasts usually not less than three or four months of the Summer. ... And then how do you think you would pass the Winter with us? I say it without exaggera on, the five and six months of Winter are spent in almost con nual discomforts,— excessive cold, smoke, and the annoyance of the na ves; we have a Cabin built of simple bark, but so well-jointed that we have to send some one outside to learn what kind of weather it is; the smoke is very o en so thick, so annoying, and so obs nate that, for five or six days at a me, if you are not en rely proof against it, it is all you can do to make out a few lines in your Breviary.”

It is there in the source that we discover the new world of truth in history. It is from The Jesuit Rela ons, the first hand accounts of the Jesuit Missions in New France, that the history of the North American Martyrs emerged, and from the Journal of Christopher Columbus (Diario), from the hand of Columbus himself that we learn of “Christ’s desire to meet the inhabitants of the so-called New World” (Pope Saint John Paul II, Ecclesia in America #1).

The source however, is not where the “cancel culture” of the twenty-first century draws its inspira on. Inhabitants of that culture tap into the “Father of Lies” (Saint John VIII:44), and with your tax dollars, deconstruct history, de-educate your children, and based on “the tempter’s “deconstruc on” then takes on an appearance of truth” (Pope Francis, LII Communica ons Day #2), demand that images of Columbus and even Saints (i.e., Saint Junipero Serra in California) be removed from the public square; proof that “there is” (as Pope Francis con nues) “no such thing as harmless disinforma on; on the contrary, trus ng in falsehood can have dire consequences. Even a seemingly slight distor on of the truth can have disastrous effects.”

A Blessing of animals took place on this year’s

cloudy and grey but the smiles were bright

and happy as the owners of family pets

gathered on parish grounds in the outdoors.

It is always amazing how the pets of all sizes,

shapes and kinds are so well behaved as their

owners greet and fraternized on this special

day.

Now a Word From Our Saints (Saint John de Brébeuf, Feast Day 19 October)

For two days now I have experienced a great desire to be a

martyr and to endure all the torments the martyrs suffered.

Jesus, my Lord and Saviour, what can I give You in return for

all the favors You have first conferred on me? I will take

from Your hand the cup of Your sufferings and call on Your

name. I vow before Your eternal Father and the Holy Spirit,

before Your most holy Mother and her most chaste spouse,

before the angels, apostles and martyrs, before my blessed

fathers Saint Igna us and Saint Francis Xavier-in truth I vow

to You, Jesus my Saviour, that as far as I have the strength I

will never fail to accept the grace of martyrdom, if some day

You in Your infinite mercy should offer it to me, Your most

unworthy servant.

I bind myself in this way so that for the rest of my life I will have neither permission nor

freedom to refuse opportuni es of dying and shedding my blood for You, unless at a

par cular juncture I should consider it more suitable for Your glory to act otherwise at that

me. Further, I bind myself to this so that, on receiving the blow of death, I shall accept it

from Your hands with the fullest delight and joy of spirit. For this reason, my beloved Jesus,

and because of the surging joy which moves me, here and now I offer my blood and body

and life. May I die only for You, if You will grant me this grace, since You willingly died for

me. Let me so live that You may grant me the gi of such a happy death. In this way, my

God and savior, I will take from Your hand the cup of Your sufferings and call on Your name:

My God, it grieves me greatly that You are not known, that in this savage wilderness all

have not been converted to You, that sin has not been driven from it. My God, even if all

the brutal tortures which prisoners in this region must endure should fall on me, I offer

myself most willingly to them and I alone shall suffer them all.

An excerpt from the Spiritual Journal of Saint John de Brébeuf: (The Jesuit Rela ons and Allied Documents, The Burrow Brothers Co, Cleveland 1898, 164, 166).

Mass Intention — Each time Mass is celebrated the priest has three intentions: 1) to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church; 2) to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church; 3) to offer the Mass for a par-ticular intention of an individual or family in thanksgiving, or for the in-tentions of another (i.e. a birthday/anniversary), or most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. The tradition originated in the early Church. The Christian faithful who give an offering to apply the Mass intention contribute to the good of the Church and share to support its ministers and works (Canon 946). The celebrant applies special graces from God upon the person or intention.

Mass is the central act of worship in the life of a Catholic. Going to Mass is about spending time with God; receiving His graces. As participants the people's "full, active and conscious participation will involve them in both body and soul and will inspire them with faith, hope and charity." The more active participation, the more glory is given to God and the more grace is bestowed not only on the Church (Church is the People) but on all the members of the human race.
